About
For decades, action-figure collectors and customizers have struggled to find appropriate ways to display their collections. Toy companies have historically offered very few display-oriented products and playsets have often been visually very tied to specific movies and movie-scenes. After over four years of designing and casting smaller scenic details, I've decided Production Platform 3 should offer collectors a more generic and user-friendly way to display their science-fiction action figures.
We've located and developed in-house a number of panels suitable for use as spaceship walls and floors that we want to bring from the computer screen and into the physical world for our clients. To make that dream happen quickly, we need your help.
We are seeking backers to raise the funding we need to purchase and customize the CAD files, have master-parts of the wall and floor panels created, and make production molds from the master-parts. Once we have these molds, we will begin producing our backer rewards.
Each panel will measure 6" by 6" square, creating a scale height and width of about 9' - in our mock-up tests, this seemed to give a good "visual space" for figure display, with or without a ceiling. Each panel is approximately 1/8" - 1/4" thick and they interlock on all sides. We are developing a set of "finishing tiles" for collectors who want to hide the connector tabs while retaining the ability to expand their displays in the future.
STRETCH GOALS: Our funding goal will secure the funds necessary to produce one wall and one floor panel. For every additional $1,000 in pledges received, we will add another wall panel to the available models, up to a total of six (6) wall panels.
Risks and challenges
Other than the normal hazards of shipping delays in getting the molding and casting supplies to us, the main potential for delay lies in modifying the CAD files to be sent out for 3D printing. Shapeways has provided me with excellent service in delivering several dozen models already, so in order to minimize immediate costs, we have decided to have them print our designs. With one CAD artist in-house and two more available if needed, we are confident any issues arising from needing to modify our model files can be handled quickly and decisively.
Our first tile design - the floor panel - has been accepted by Shapeways for printing with no need for revisions noted yet.

Scott, that is an EXCELLENT question! I appear to have mentioned it everywhere BUT in the actual Kickstarter campaign! I've added a paragraph that discusses sizing of the final products.

About what size would each piece be? Love the idea and look forward to helping out.

Looks great can't wait to see what else you have in store for us!

This is a product that an action figure collector has screamed for for years. Thank you for creating a project that will give us some modular type playsets and dioramas for our three and three quarter plastic buddies.
