- STORY SYNOPSIS
Daisy and her father William live on an isolated, destitute sheep farm in the Scottish Highlands. At twenty years old, she has never been outside the farmland, and spends her time helping William with household tasks and waiting to see the single car that passes the house everyday. Though seemingly content with this unexciting existence, she has some awareness of an outside world - but it’s clear something is holding her back from exploring it.
When a radio broadcast reports the disappearance of a Young Man, the third to go missing in the area in five years, we begin to uncover the dark secret binding Daisy and William to their land, and each other.
A quiet and haunting coming-of-age thriller, YELLOWBIRD will be a visually striking 15-minute film with an engaging female narrative.
- WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
Director's Statement: I was on a long train long journey, somewhere north. It was early morning, the landscape shrouded in fog, and at one point I just happened to see in the middle of a vast, empty field - a woman riding a bicycle.
It was a combination of the landscape, the solace of her within it, and the simplicity of the activity that made me wonder: where she was going, or what she was going back to?
Through the eyes of a young woman, YELLOWBIRD studies what ties us to a place or person. It explores feeling claustrophobic in the widest-open landscapes, and isolated within the closest-knit relationships. It questions: in what ways do we need each other to survive?
As a writer I am passionate about creating striking, unusual stories with young women at the centre - I wrote this script in April 2017 so I'm really excited it's finally moving from page to screen. Being Scottish-born and half of my family being Scottish, it feels natural to set a story here and it's the perfect world for this film.
- WHY NOW, WHY KICKSTARTER?
We're here on Kickstarter because we're asking you to help make YELLOWBIRD a reality. With the fierce call for more female-centrered stories in entertainment industry, this is a story you haven't seen before, and won't be one you forget.
- LOOK AND FEEL OF THE FILM
This is a character-driven story and will take inspiration from films that capture raw, subtle emotion and understated tension. It will feature unconventional framing, fixed position shots and detailed close-ups.
cinematographic references: Shell (2012), Tyrannosaur (2011), A Cuillin Rising (2011),Una (2016), The Levelling (2016), Milly Cope photography.
The farm is the most important character in the story, and we are thrilled to have secured the perfect location in Scotland!
EXTERIOR. The farm itself is wonderfully varied and is a perfect state of decay (in the nicest possible way!) - including overgrown gardens, collapsing roofs and rusted doors. It perfectly reflects the failing of the farmbusiness and the subsequent lack of care and upkeep of the space.
INTERIOR. The farmhouse is a shell of a home - it's a purely functional for the characters. It's stripped to minimum, with few trinkets or personal possessions and, like the exteriors, shows severe neglect.
To establish our world, we will be paying close attention to props, lighting and colour. These will change throughout the house and between inside and out to set different moods.
The Kitchen, Dining Space and Corridors - pale or harsh, ugly colours and textures for the main living spaces.
Daisy's Bedroom/Bathroom - decorated in lighter pastels with a more delicate palette and textures. Still stripped to minimum, we might see a hint of personalisation or memorabilia from childhood.
Our costumes will suit tough farm life: tough, durable and practical. Hardy jackets, grubby fleeces and dirty jumpers will reflect years of wear and little attention to appearance. A standout piece is Daisy's yellow raincoat - a bright light amongst the bleakness - and the clothes she wears in the privacy of her own bedroom: clothes of lighter colours and delicate textures, as well as some she may have worn as a child.
We will also have authentic uniforms for the Policeman and Policewoman.

We have an immensely talented team on board to make it happen, who have worked on major TV and Film projects!
We also have fantastic women in many of our HoD and positions of creativity on set. We believe that telling this story with a female voice is incredibly meaningful, but recent reports conclude that in the UK just 13.6% of working film directors over the last decade were women, 25.7% of producers were female and the percentage that represents female cinematographers is 6.2%. We are keen to be part of helping balance the gender disparity in our industry.
So please meet some of the YELLOWBIRD team!
Making films is expensive - making an ambitious film even more so! We would love for you to join our team and be a part of bringing YELLOWBIRD to life.
Production will begin late Autumn 2018 and last 3 days. The money you help us raise through our Kickstarter will fund our production costs during shooting, including:
- EQUIPMENT RENTAL - one of our most substantial cost is the equipment. It’s crucial that we get the right equipment to tell the story subtly and effectively through the cinematography, lighting and sound.
TEAM FEES - We have an immensely talented cast and crew and in order to produce the best work possible, we need to give everyone the best tools and to pay them for their work.
- PRODUCTION DESIGN - now that we have a fantastic location to work in, we need to fill it! We'll be sourcing everything we need to dress our set and dress our actors, and we'll need to cover costs for transporting it to the location.
- CATERING - we all know the catering is the most important thing on a set. We will be doing long hours and braving the Scottish elements, so we will need many, many snacks. And coffee.
In return for your contribution us we are offering a range of rewards including: credits in the film, access to the film before it's release, a copy of the script, tickets to our premiere screening in London, and for those of you able to give a little more - sitting in on our editing suite!
We do understand that not everyone is able to support us financially, you can still help us help us by getting the word out there to a bigger crowd!
Please like and share our campaign as far and wide as you can, and follow us for updates and behind the scenes info on:
