The Bastion Wars concept has been over 15 months in the making, trials and product testing began last summer and have culminated in the final design and the production of the mock-ups pictured here. Various materials were considered and tested and the clear winner for strength, durability, workability and affordability was Foamed PVC, initially tested at 3mm it made the clip system difficult to produce, desired strength for larger and higher surfaces was questionable leading to the final 5mm material being optimal. This material is strong yet easy to work with to produce high quality modular tiles that you can configure in a vast multitude of ways as you wish.

How is it different?
What I have found with almost all terrain kits is that they come at the expense of space and gaming surface, a building for example typically does not create space but simply raises the gaming surface it encompasses to a greater height. In addition, I have found that many terrain options on the market today make using gangways and any level systems fiddly and frustrating, even huge custom gaming tables that would cost a consumer vast sums of money have relatively small surface areas to actually game on. Many of these terrain systems take up far more space than they create, the Bastion Wars system actually increases your gaming surface as well as adding layers (levels) to your gaming surface.
If you build your kit to have an additional two square feet of gaming space, you can retain the use of the gaming area you have built upon. WIN. The size of the system lends itself to be used with gaming systems from 15mm upwards with no upper limit if you construct the kit to suit.
There are four tile variations in the kit, twenty are 4 x 4 inches to give you true modular flexibility to produce a number of configurations, these are supported with three 4 x 8 inch tiles, a single 8 x 8 inch plate that makes a good starting point or focal point of your terrain piece and finally six corner tiles which are very slightly smaller at one edge (5mm) to allow consistency of flooring levels. Each tile will be carved on a single side with one of the designs chosen by each backer upon funding, these designs are pictured below.
The clip system is where the real expense lies, they are made from injected plastic with a small percentage of glass to aid strength and rigidity, they are inexpensive in themselves thus many more than actually required will be supplied with each kit allowing them to be made into a number of configurations. The clips require gluing together into the desired configuration to construct your kit, the flat edge can be glued to another clip or clips.
The mould in which to inject the heated plastic requires a high initial investment, this is the main purpose of the project an accounts for 75% of the funding with the rest affording a larger CNC machine, materials and insurances.
Stretch Goal 1:
Upon reaching funding to the value of £9500 each kit will include two 4 x 8 inch Elevator plates detailed with a raised centre platform containing carved grids.
Stretch Goal 2:
Upon reaching £11,000 two doorways and two Hatchways will be included with each kit, the difference with these tiles is that they will be double sided so the carved detail is visible from any direction. The hatchway works nicely as a vertical or horizontal portal for your models to move through.
Stretch Goal 3:
Upon reaching £12,500 each kit will also include an epic 12" x 12" plate that will make a nice centre for the kit(s), a large detailed tile of 1 square foot makes for a great landing pad or defensive wall. This plate can also provide a nice floor if you wish your building to be detailed from the ground up. With the addition of 2 elevator tiles, 2 Doorways and 2 Hatches you will need additional clips, with this stretch goal being achieved you will receive an extra 40.
Stretch Goal 4:
This will allow the purchase of a second CNC machine which will allow the detailing of both sides of each tile and allow continuous production as well as providing a redundancy machine should one have an issue. You will be able to choose a carve from the available options for both sides of the tile, alternatively you could leave one side flat for custom painting, transfers or to remain a flat wall/floor, the choice will be yours upon reaching a target of £15,000.
A single kit can be made in a vast number of ways and can be used as a stand alone piece of scenery or in conjunction with your existing scenery.
A Triple Kit:
Multiple Kits can be constructed together or as a number of terrain pieces that can incorporate your current terrain or remain separate.
With 5 kits you have incredible flexibility to produce a number of smaller buildings or a single large scenery piece.
The Scope of Bastion Wars:
Upon achieving funding and the project moving forward there is staggering scope to the development of the product, as it stands it is incredibly versatile able to produce ruins, platforms and work with/compliment your existing scenery. Tiles can be produced up to 12" x 24" with any number of potential details possible. The range can extend to specific gaming systems or even custom basing and stands for your models. With your help we can let our imaginations go and bring a huge number of awesome new and innovative products to the gaming and modelling hobby community.
The aim of the Bastion Wars brand is to be available to all. Shipping should begin within 4 - 6 weeks of receipt of funds and you will receive your kit in full with no staggered deliveries. Shipping rate examples are as follows:
UK mainland - £5.00
USA - £12.00 (Approx. $16.50)
Europe - £10.00 (Approx. 11.50 Euro)
Australia - £12.00 (Approx $20.75)
All the imagery and examples you can see have been produced using a desktop CNC mill with a working area of 4 square inches, as such you will only see tiles of that size. There is only one speed setting on the spindle and it is limited in the size of tooling it will accommodate, though the quality of the carving is of a high standard, the machine(s) purchased upon funding will allow a much greater finish to the details with variable tooling and spindle speeds.
The clips have been painstakingly produced using plasticard and plastic rods and plastic cement, the quality you can see in all the example imagery is of a significantly sub-standard to that of the final product. I have had meetings and visited injection moulders with many years of experience who will produce the clips en-mass for a low price yet maintain an exceptional standard.
Bastion Wars products are designed to be used by experienced modellers and gamers of 14+ years of age.
Risks and challenges
The challenges all revolve around time and getting the mould made and full production in swing. I have been investing blood, sweat and tears on the project for some time and am confident in its functionality, I am surrounded by skilled machinists and industry specialists through various connections including family and friends. Any issues that arise during production will be minor and addressed efficiently and effectively.
I will be pragmatic in my estimations for delivery and will be forthcoming with updates and information regarding progression of the brand and product. The most obvious risk is not inspiring enough support to launch the brand and disappointing those backers and supporters who do want to see the product on the market.
