About this project
What is Act/or?
Act/or is a comedy-drama about struggling actors on their difficult journey in their search for success.
One of them works at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum as the scare artist in the chamber of horrors; one goes from one audition to another; one just stays at home waiting for "the big call", and one gets a call - not from Hollywood... but to take the lead role in a Hungarian alternative play.
The story takes us through London and Budapest, shedding light on the acting industry. The premise is to show how unpredictable and quite often hilarious the acting industry is. You can have all the talent, degrees and skills in the world... but you need to be in a good place at a good time.
What stage is Act/or at and what we need money for?
90% of the film has been shot already in 2012 and 2013 and we are now at the process of editing.
The vast majority of us worked for deferred payments. So far, we have managed to receive sufficient funding to allow us to produce the highest quality work.
The film is just as good as we hoped in our wildest dreams or even better!
However we need funds for post production to maintain the quality of the film, such as:
1. Re-shoot of one scene in London
2. Further editing
3. Post sound
4. Color grading
5. Digital prints
7. Festival entries
8. Web design
9. Music copyrights
12. Initial screenings
What direction will ACT/OR take?
We are going to enter Act/or in to International Film Festivals. Then, our aim is Theatrical Release in Great Britain, Hungary, United States and other English speaking countries.
What is the track record and previous work of the writer/director?
Janka Berentz has a passion for directing, producing, photography and theatre.
She studied on a drama course in Budapest at Vörösmarty Mihály Gimnázium where she won several awards, including the Creativity award at The Odyssey of the Mind 2004 in Maryland, USA. When she finished her A levels in Hungary, she continued her studies at New Theatre in Budapest as an actress.
After two years of acting experience she decided to move to London where she performed as a musical actress at In Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End. She continued her studies at University of Westminster in London. During her university studies she had the opportunity to be the Assistant Producer on a feature film called Turbulence, directed by double BAFTA winner director Michael Baig Clifford. She has been working on other feature films, short films, music videos, commercials and she is currently working as a photographer at a Hungarian event organisation company called ‘Londonfalva’.
As for her graduation film, she made a 30 minute version of Act/or. This short film had success at Regent Street Cinema, which encouraged her to make a feature length version with Kitty Mészáros writing and co-directing.
Kitty Mészáros has passion for film-making, writing and acting.
She has co-created short films at ‘Passport control 5’ short film festival and at ‘Digi 24’ short film festival where they won the first prize and the HBO special award.
Kitty Mészáros studied at the Hungarian National Theatre Studio in Budapest and worked professionally as a lead actress on a well-known Hungarian series called "Jóban Rosszban" (For Better or Worse) between 2004-2008. She decided to move abroad to continue her studies. First she moved to Ireland to learn English in Waterford Institute of Technology and in 2012 she moved to London where the collaboration between her and Janka Berentz began.
Why do you want to make ACT/OR?
We wanted to create a film for everyone.
We have years of acting experience, we are familiar with the “Acting World” and that is why we chose to express ourselves throughout this particular medium. The script of Act/or has a natural and realistic tone and style.
Act/or is a film which you watch with your family; there is no extreme violence nor sex scenes in it.
About our Producers
The twin sisters Mando and Myrto Stathi, have always been intrigued by Performing Arts.
During her studies, Myrto, has being involved in theatre productions in Greece. Her six-year-long occupation in the field of theatre has given her the chance to work in all aspects of a theatrical production, from managing the production to directing, acting, writing or adapting the original script.
Mando, on the other hand, realised her passion for films and decided to follow it professionally. She finished her Masters in Media in London. Since then she has been involved as Producer, Production Manager or Associate Producer on Feature Films, Short Films, TV Series, Music Videos, Commercials and Documentaries. She gained familiarity with every step of production.
When their paths crossed in London three years ago, they set up their Production Company Stathi Twins Productions Ltd.
Since 2011, they have produced various short films;
- SKYDRIVER in Pre-Production,
- BLUE TRAIN,
- SUBSTANTIA NIGRA
Commercials, and they are now in production of two feature films;
- TRINITY (a drama taking place in Greece, Italy and United Kingdom)
- and of course ACT/OR.
We shot Act/or on RED ( Since its arrival, the RED ONE has established a pedigree of Oscar winning films, 3D features, and even magazine covers that have solidified its reputation as a reliable workhorse. Introduced as the purest digital alternative to 35mm film).
We used different Director of Photographers to give us a different style in London and in Budapest. On the one hand, we have London with very nicely constructed, steady shots; and on the other hand Budapest, where we have a more improvisational, handheld camera style.
In Budapest our lead Director of Photography is Jack Shelbourn (gradute from De Montford University and London Film Academy) who worked with Lucas Tucknott and Kristof Deak a student at The Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest.
In London our cinematographer is Phil Moreton (a graduate from National Film and Television School).
Having finished with the second cut the difference of the two cities came out perfectly! :)
We worked with mainly new talents from UK and recognised actors from Hungary.
Nate Fallows played Peter Pan on Jonathan Hyde’s side with the 360 Production in San Francisco. He won the Laurence Olivier Bursary Award in 2009.
Törőcsik Franciska won Best Actress award in Paris Silhuette film festival for her role in ‘Sunstroke’
Scherer Péter won several awards including the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2007 and Jaszai Mari-charge state honors in 2009. He appeared in over 60 feature films.

All these talents were willing to contribute to Act/or for deferred payments because they believe in the film’s success.
We are also honored (and lucky) that Presser Gabor- Kossuth Award and Erkel Ferenc Award-winning Hungarian composer, performer, pianist and singer- let us use his piano piece for Act/or; also Zagar composed an original soundtrack specifically for Act/or (background music used for the teaser). Puskas Peter contributed on of his song which could be also heard in the film.
We are in negotiation with other well-known music bands from UK, US and Hungary.

When is Act/or going to be ready?
We are aiming to finish the film this year and send it to film festivals in 2014.
We broke so many rules of how you are supposed to make a film… so if you feel you know something, which could be good for Act/or – we are more than happy to hear from you!
IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS ARE TRUE, YOU'LL LOVE THIS FILM:
1. You like films, which make you laugh and move you at the same time.
2. You know which film this line comes from: “There is no spoon.”
3. You never give up on your dreams! You know you can do it no matter how hard!
4. You smile inside on or with foreigners when they make a grammar mistake.
5. You have ever been lost, had doubts or had difficulties finding yourself… or the Nutella!
6. You met someone famous and... nothing... BUT IT WAS AWESOME!!!
7. You know someone who knows someone who knows someone who is an actor and you wish for him/her to succeed.
Risks and challenges
We have already accomplished so much from so little.
Probably our biggest challenge is distribution – ACT/OR does not have a distributor attached yet, although we've been shown interest in Hungary.
We send ACT/OR to International Film Festivals, and our goal is to find the right distributor for the film.
Many elements of the rewards will be fulfilled well before December of 2014, which is when we hope to release the film and have all of our private screenings. For those of you who are attending such events we will do our best to keep you in the loop on our schedule.
You must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (who will count as your plus one) to attend the private screening or premiere.
The final cut of the film may have to be further edited in certain cases to the laws in the country which it is being viewed, or for different types of media.
We thank you in advance if you can help make this ride possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
