About this project
Check out the updates.
The thought of thousands of unpublished images from the golden age (1955-1965) of American road racing sitting stagnant within two tattered blue 3-ring binders has been nagging me for some years. As a young man I was exposed to all the great drivers and cars from this era by my father, Bev Spencer. His passion for automobile racing and Ferraris led him to become a Ferrari dealer and ultimately to campaign ex-factory Ferrari competition cars at tracks up and down the west coast during the '60s.
This extensive collection of images covering his racing exploits and photo archives inherited from other media sources of this era combine to form a unique chronicle of these heady days of California road racing.
Motorbinder in the media:
Our MotorBinder project will fund a new book that will offer enthusiasts a special insight into the US road racing scene and particularly events in California. To achieve this goal we're offering special rewards that allow you to own some of the exceptional images we're discovering at highly discounted prices.
The funds from this KICKSTARTER campaign will be used to complete the arduous process of archiving, digitizing, and restoring the contents of the Motor Binders. Once the scope of the collection has been fully revealed, we'll produce a stylish and informative fine art book.
The Book will guide the reader through the evolution of US road racing with rare images from Torrey Pines, Paramount Ranch, Laguna Seca, Riverside and other great tracks. With your help we'll be able to carefully archive ALL the images, eventually making them available within an easily searchable digital archive. We're just beginning to see the diverse nature of the collection.
The Book will also offer a glimpse into the racing exploits of passionate privateer racing Ferrari owner, Bev Spencer, via many never before published images from the Spencer Family Archives and the Motor Binders. You can help us bring the Book to life by spreading the word about our project. Please tell your friends!
Risks and challenges
We've carefully assessed the potential challenges to fulfilling the rewards we're offering and feel we have full control of of the majority of the steps required. With the exception of printing the book, all other operations will be carried out 'in-house' by myself and digital imaging specialist, Timothy Pinault. Timothy has an advanced degree in photography and significant experience in the self-publishing realm.
We've chosen a local self-publishing house that has established a reputation as a leader in fine art publications. We've purchased the best Epson scanning and printing equipment and are fluent with the most contemporary digital imaging software. We're ready to dive into the project 24/7 when our funding goal is met to insure all rewards are received on time.
Thank you for helping us make the MotorBinder project come alive!
