Meet nubo, a cute pet for your iPhone (5/5s/5c)

Smartphones are now part of our daily life. Use nubo to transform your smartphone into a lovable little companion.

A combination of a hardware case and software functionalities, nubo spices up your social communication and adds flair to your messages.

Its portable design makes nubo your perfect companion at home and out on the town.

- An iPhone case that can wave its arms!

Equipped with designated apps, nubo can move its cute little arms. In the morning, it opens up its eyes and flaps both arms up and down. When you get a message from a friend, it raises a hand. When nubo is in a good mood, it waves both arms while doing a little dance.

nubo is not your average dull iPhone case. With its diverse assortment of expressive gestures, nubo is more of a close and lovable pal.

nubo comes with three official apps, which define the communication environment that surrounds users and their iPhone pets: nubo.me, nubo.messeage and nubo.world.

 1. nubo.me: a fun app for “my nubo and me”

A bunch of useful functionalities that let you play and fiddle with your nubo. The alarm clock and the timer turn those dull daily tasks into fun.

an app for communication between nubos

nubo.message is an app that allows you to send your nubo’s adorable expressions and gestures to a friend’s nubo. When nubo receives a message that makes it start flapping about or making funny faces, it feels like your friend is standing right beside you.

an app that brings your interactive circle of friends even closer

nubo.world converts into gestures and sounds information from various social apps. You can tweet from your nubo, and even connect with nubo owners all over the world through the #nubo hashtag.

  • konashi – a Bluetooth development kit for smartphones

In order to boost the potential of iPhone and the nubo apps, we have joined forces with Yukai Engineering, the renowned robot company, and used their physical computing toolkit konashi (http://www.ux-xu.com/product/konashi-en).

Customizing nubo with konashi (for developers)

The physical computing kit konashi gives users a free hand to program their iOS devices, so they can use it to customize nubo’s movements and even develop original apps. For instance, it is possible to add legs and build a nubot that can walk, or create a nubot that lights up when an email message arrives. konashi opens unlimited possibilities for users’ creativity in adding new functionalities to nubo. In order to give even first-time developers without prior experience in prototyping an opportunity to develop their own apps and pursue new possibilities, Yukai Engineering has put together a library that enables development using javascript and objective-c.

Background

Two members of the development team created the nubo prototype called nubot. Check it out at http://nubot.me/.

They used to work together at the same physical location, but the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck on March 11, 2011, forced them to separate.

As a result, they often had to rely on video chat in their work. Yet, computer-based video chat only shows the other party and lacks the actual physical presence conveyed through gestures and movements, so eventually it fails to provide the feel of a real conversation.

In order to solve this problem, the two developers decided to use their smartphones and equip them with legs and arms fashioned out of devices at hand, thus building little robot-like creatures. That was the beginning of nubo.

We decided that it is essential to slash the price of such robots and modify them into a more user-friendly format in order to develop a broad base of potential customers who would want to use nubo as a tool for a more enjoyable and exciting communication experience.

Aiming to establish the individuality of our robot as a friendly and cuddly character, we joined forces with borutanext5, a young female designer with exclusive insight in the cutting-edge pop culture (http://borutanext5.com/). We also got Yukai Engineering, the company behind “necomimi” and other revolutionary devices, to help us expand the potential of nubo by further integrating it with smartphones, advancing miniaturization, and developing apps. Together, we decided to create this product in a manner that brings to the fore the appeal of the cute, lovable character.

Try out nubo and build a new and exciting relationship with your smartphone.

Future development

nubo is not simply a gadget that expands the functionality of your iPhone.

We took a good look at the tools that surround us in our everyday life, searching for a product that would be a perfect match for a gadget designed to be always by your side, and decided to use iPhone as it is the device of choice for the majority of smartphone users. Going forward, we will continue to develop the prototype model presented on Kickstarter, and will work to turn nubo into everyone’s favorite iPhone pet.

Join us in raising nubo as the pet of the future.

Risks and challenges

At present, our project is running extremely smoothly. Our team, however, is small, and without prior experience in product manufacturing. Such challenges always involve risks. Still, we are willing to take the challenges and face the risks. We feel that there are two major challenges in the nubo project.

(1) Issues related to the model
The nubo used in the video and the still images functions very well. It is, however, a prototype made using a 3D printer. If our project is successful on Kickstarter, the final product will be manufactured in a factory based on a model that we will build. We plan to deliver the first nubos to their new owners in August 2014, but the actual delivery date is subject to changes as we may face problems related to the design or materials for the model or, conversely, the model creation process may go more smoothly than expected.

*we're sorry that our goal price is a little bit high, because of the "minimum lot" of the product.

(2) Product durability
We spare no effort in order to boost product durability to the maximum extent possible. nubo, however, is made of servomotors enclosed in a silicone casing, so it may break or get damaged if dropped, subjected to sudden impact, or mishandled. The servomotors may also wear out, so be careful not to use excessive force when handling your nubo.

We intend to clarify as much possible all envisioned risks and respond in a swift and thorough manner to all questions from supporters. We’ll upload videos that show the performance of nubo in actual use conditions, and will regularly update this page in order to keep you informed about the project’s progress status. We’ll also do our best to incorporate a broad range of opinions from our supporters.
