Welcome to Sandcastles.
A quick introduction with a prototype deck and a daft shirt!
So, what is Sandcastles?
Quite simply it is the latest game to come from Yay Games and Andrew Harman.
You are racing to build the best Sandcastles you can from the cards available. If you do it right you can earn bonuses for having the 'Biggest Sandcastle' or the 'Tallest Tower'. But you have to watch your opponents very carefully as they could attack your fragile creation with crabs, buckets and seagulls. It is a fast paced, easy to learn game that can be played solo, two-player or for up to 7 players.
How do you play Sandcastles?
Each player is dealt three cards. These will be either cards that are used to build Sandcastles - showing crabs, buckets or seagulls. Or they could be attack cards which either allow you to try stealing parts of other players Sandcastles - or stop opponents scuttling off with yours.
Here's a handy bit of the rules to show you.
As soon as you have completed a Sandcastle you check to see if it has earned you any bonuses and then you collect up all the parts of the sandcastle you've built and use them as points at the end of the game.
The Game Ends when the Big Wave appears and comes racing up the beach.
The player with the most points wins.
Sounds simple. And it is. Or at least it would be if it wasn't for 'player induced chaos'. With only three cards in your hand and one card to play each turn you really have to be watching what is going on at all times.
It's fast, it's competitive and it's blink and you're in trouble. And best of all, it's like a little bit of summer in a box.
There are rules at the end of this for you to have a closer look at or click here and watch a quick explanation with a prototype deck.
So, just what's in a box of Sandcastles?
We've designed and playtested a game that can have increasing levels of complexity. You can play it as a straight race to build sandcastles, you can add in certain bonus levels to reward carefully planned sandcastles that have the right number of crab parts, or seagull towers or buckets. Or you can have extra rewards if you get your Sandcastle to be just the right shape. We even have a whole extra set of in game rewards that will be available as special Kickstarter extras. We've designed it to be as much fun and as challenging and rewarding as we can. Quite simply the more money we can raise through your support then the more of these bonuses we can add to the game and the more fun we can all have.
So what's in a box of Sandcastles? The answer is as much as we can get in there. We want to be able to bring you our full on vision with all of the bonuses, on the best quality stock To do that we need your support...but hey, that's why you are reading this isn't it?
Now - you don't have to believe everything I say. I'm biased and bound to love my newest creation. Below are things that other, far more reliable commentators have to say.
First up is
Go here for a smashing preview. These guys run Table top Tuesdays at Loading Bar in London so they know their games!!
In their words - 'From the get-go, it became obvious to me, that Sandcastles could not have happened without Frankenstein’s bodies. The experience of making the first game, but more importantly, seeing other people play it, is clearly reflected in the way Sandcastles is designed, and to me, makes for an even better game.'
And hot on their tail
There's another smashing review here. And in their expert words - 'Sandcastles is a simple, fast and cheerfully mean little game offering just enough opportunity to make your fellow players lives a misery that it should appeal both to families and the hardcore gamer."
Next up we have
Token Trove have a keen eye out for family friendly and lunch-time session playable games. Read their great review to find out how they fared against the onslaught of their 8 year old daughter!

And another smashing review just in from Club Fantasci rating the pre-production prototype at 6.5/10. Read more here. http://clubfantasci.com/sandcastles-kickstarter-from-yay-games-review-by-christopher-dickinson/
We will be bringing you more comments and reviews as they come in. So do check back and see who thinks what.
So, hopefully by now you'll be wanting more details about how to get your copy. Let me give you more info about the backer levels.
The Backer Levels.
So, we've tried to put together a few interesting levels. Here are a few more details about each level.
Water Wings. Pretty simple this. Pledge £1 or more and you will be helping us get this game completed. You will get regular updates on our progress as well as having your name included on our website hall of fame.
Sandcastles. Mostly straightforward this one. For £15 or more you will get your own copy of Sandcastles. This will start out as the basic card version in a tuck box, but as we unlock the stretch goals you will get the benefit of being one of our backers. If we get the funding to allow it we will be upgrading all of the games to card tiles of 1.0mm or better. This means a bigger box and a chunkier game. We will not be adding extra shipping costs to you for the extra weight of game. So, here's hoping we get to our top stretch goal.
Deluxe Sandcastles. This is a very special edition that we are very excited about. This will be printed on board stock right from the word 'go'. We will be having a special flip top box with a magnetic clasp made, which will be lined with cloth - just like a beach style hamper. This will not be put on general release after the Kickstarter is finished. As well as the seriously improved card stock there will be a set of four postcards with artwork created especially for this project. This level will include a special edition rules sheet which will include all the backer names for this and levels above. And if we achieve our ultimate stretch goal there will be different artwork for the bonus cards and two extra bonus pieces to add to the 'Biggest Sandcastle' and 'Tallest Tower' experience.
Sand Doodles and Deluxe Sand Doodles. It's always tempting to run a stick through a fresh stretch of sand and leave your very own message. Well, this is your chance to do that but in a game. We will add your message to one card but in all the editions that we print right now. Some cards have more room than others so you can have a small doodle or a larger one. Just avoid making them rude.
Here is an idea of what you could have.
Or if you would like more space....
There is a time limit on these Sand-Doodle levels. We will need all of the artwork prepared and ready to go to our manufacturers within two days of the end of the project. So we will be looking for folk to get their messages to us while the project is running. Why so urgent? Well, we have a certain window of time to get the production working. It takes time to set-up, test, manufacture, package, assemble and ship a game. We have been working on this game a long time and now we want it out to all you lovely people as soon as possible.
AND as if this wasn't enough... for the period of the Kickstarter we are offering all backers the chance to buy buy 'Frankenstein's Bodies' at a 25% off. When we have your backing we will give you a code to unlock the discount on our website www.frankensteinsbodies.com.
The Stretch Goals
We want to get this game out to you. We have played with so many people who are so keen to get their 'proper' version that we know we have to do this. And after the success of 'Frankenstein's Bodies' we have decided on a few crucial stretch goals.
We are setting our funding goal as low as we can which will make sure that the basic game gets printed and out to you.
Basic Funding means that we get all the Sandcastle tiles in a tuck box with two of the bonuses - the 'Biggest Sandcastle' and the 'Tallest Tower'. This level of funding means we are putting our own money in to cover the rest of the printing costs. That's how much we believe in this game.
Icon Bonuses released. When we reach £6000 we can release an extra set of bonuses. These are the icon bonuses that add a level of strategy to the game. Can you create sandcastles that have more than 3 crabs showing?
Shape Bonuses Released. When we hit £8500 we can release another level of complexity and fun. The shape bonuses are earned only if your completed sandcastle matches the shape shown. Combine these with the Icon Bonuses for strategic conundrums.
The Kickstarter Bonuses are Released. When we hit £11,000 we can release a set of Kickstarter special bonuses. Including some pun-based Shape Bonuses. ('The Goal', 'The Stretch Goal' and 'The Early Bird'.)
Extra Prettiness and a Proper Box. When we push on just a little further to £14,000 we can add a bigger and better box which means the rules won't be quite so small and we can add extra details to the sandscape. Shells, pebbles alongside the sand doodles we will be getting.
And finally the Ultimate Edition Release. When we reach £40,000 we can gear up the manufacturing and produce all the games on 1mm board (or better). Now, this looks like a big jump - and it is. Here's why. This will be a bigger, heavier game than the basic card edition. Not only will it cost quite a bit more to manufacture but will create bigger shipping costs. We want to avoid passing these costs on to you so we need to cost that in.
And if you are thinking that the Deluxe Version will suddenly become less 'deluxe' now all the games are tile upgraded well, there will be extra goodies in the 'Deluxe' Package. We will be adding 'Biggest Sandcastle' and 'Tallest Tower' trophies as well as still packing your game in the special 'Deluxe edition.
And that's pretty much it.
We have the artwork, we have prototypes, we have followed all the lessons learned from 'Frankenstein's Bodies' and play-tested 'Sandcastles' all over the place.
We've put the time in and now we are ready to get our second game on the funding trail.
I hope you'll come and join us on the sunny side of the games table.
We look forward to all of your support.
Any questions - please get in contact.
Here are the full rules.
Thank you for your interest.
Bye for now.
Risks and challenges
Last year we launched our first game 'Frankenstein's Bodies' at Essen after a successful Kickstarter campaign. We learned a lot from that and gained a lot of experience making sure we fulfilled all our expectations and commitments. many people afterwards told us that they were very happy with the way we ran a tight and efficient project.
We want to do the same with 'Sandcastles' and we have sourced manufacturers and printers who know the game world and it's demands.
We have allowed ourselves time to make this project work and - in all honesty - this should be a fairly straightforward case of getting a game printed. The playtesting, artwork, development - all the pre-production - is done.
Now we need your backer support to help us get the finances in place.
'Frankenstein's Bodies' was a success. With your help we should be able to make another effective game and have a great deal more people enjoying 'Sandcastles'.
Communication is vital and I will be updating you with progress and I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
All the very best. Andrew Harman Chief Creative Yay Games.
