Wolf Honey is a beekeeping operation based in Portland, Oregon. At Wolf Honey, we focus on sustainably producing raw, unfiltered honey and beeswax-based cosmetics. Our hives are located in urban neighborhoods in Portland and on a farm 12 miles from the city center. We sell our honey and products in locally-owned stores and restaurants, and as part CSA shares. Wolf Honey is not only delicious, but you can literally taste Portland in our honey from the nectar of the local flowers.
After several years of keeping bees as a hobby, last year we started to sell Wolf Honey in several stores around town. We also produced a line of beeswax lip balm called Wolf Balm. The response was overwhelming – and we quickly sold out. This year, we are scaling up to meet this demand. We plan to partner with more local retailers and include the honey in CSA shares of area farms. We also plan to scale up our beeswax cosmetics line, and partner with shops and food carts to include Wolf Honey in locally produced food products – like ice cream. Yum!
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the purchase of all the apiary supplies and woodenware (hive boxes and hive stands) that Wolf Honey needs for the next year. We currently have 5 hives in North Portland, and plan to expand to 20 hives. The woodenware will be assembled locally from reclaimed wood and other environmentally sustainable sources by our friends Brian and Jason Thackeray. They work at Bamboo Revolution, a collective of designers, craftsmen and innovators who are committed to using sustainable building materials. Instead of buying the pre-cut pieces from a factory far away, Brian and Jason are going to find the wood, cut it and help me assemble the hive components right here in my neighborhood.
The expansion of Wolf Honey will not only allow us to produce more honey to sell locally, but also bolster the Portland honeybee population. Honeybees provide pollination to urban gardens and farms, gather pollen that alleviates allergy symptoms, produce beeswax for cosmetic and household products, and give us the sweetest gift of all…honey. The more honeybees we have in the Portland area, the better for our gardens, our neighborhoods, and our environment With your help I can make Wolf Honey a success. Thank you so much.
