I am raising funds to finish producing, engineering and recording and then completely mixing (what will become) my 3rd solo album, “West of the 405." The record was in the early stages when my personal funds ran out. With the exception of drums (played by Producer, Engineer and Mixer, Steve Refling), I am playing all the guitars, bass, piano, organ, as well as all the lead and backing vocals. Doing all these things myself does take a bit more time and effort but I know that it’s been done right. And Steve is a great critic with an amazing ear. As a matter of fact, he helped me arrange all of the songs that will be on the record. If you hear the demos I made myself (where I also play drums - (I’m not a good drummer!) you will notice the arrangements are not the same.
Risks and challenges
When recording, sometimes it’s difficult to coordinate with everyone’s schedule. As it’s just Steve and myself, we do not have that problem. The decisions we make, regarding the recording and performances on this record are decided by two people and two people only. We do not spend an inordinate amount of time discussing things; it either is bad, mediocre, good or great. Good and great are sometimes hard to discern and are quite subjective but we shoot for great. Bad and mediocre are easily recognizable and thus, we move on fast from that. We also have spread the sessions out to recording 1 day a week. This keeps our ears fresh and allows ideas to pop in our heads and our good sense to extinguish them! I’ve recorded many records and singles, as well as worked as a session musician. That gives me a lot of experience when it comes to being in the studio and handling my business in that situation. We expect to have the recording completed between 5-7 weeks from when the funds arrive. After that, it should take another 2 weeks to mix/master the record. After that it’s simply pressing the copies. I am in complete ownership of these songs (since I wrote them) and they have never been recorded before (other than as demos) and none of these songs has been released in any format as of yet. I have complete control over all items pertaining to this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
