THE PROJECT

A 10 minute short film to be shot in the backwoods of Oregon in late November.

THE STORY

John, the haggard old owner of a shale pit, has intentionally withheld everything he can from his newly empowered ex-wife, Sheila. On this day, Sheila and her lawyer come to the shale pit to make one final push to draw some money and pride out of him.  But John won’t give up without a fight.

Shelia arrives with just as much determination as John.  After years of being made to feel worthless and invisible, she is finally in a position of power. Convincing John to comply with the basic demands of divorce court will be her crowning vindication, and she will not leave until she is satisfied.

Descending into the gravel pit, she finds John waiting for her, holed up in his tractor.  Sheila confronts John and their argument is pushed to the extreme.

THE CHARACTERS

Shale deals with power struggle in relationships and explores when an oppressed spouse has had enough.

HBO AWARD FOR SHALE!

Shale is already an award winning film.  Mike De Caro, producer, won the HBO Films Young Producers Development Grant for Shale.  This covers a portion of our budget, but we still need to make up the difference.  We are deeply humbled and grateful to have the support of HBO.

PANAVISION AWARD FOR SHALE!

We recently found out that we received the New Filmmaker Award from Panavision which allows us the used of one of their Super 16mm cameras.  This means we get to shoot film!  Photographic, chemical, flammable, tasty film!  Again, we are deeply humbled and grateful to have the support of Panavision.

WERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

We will use every cent making Shale the best film it can be, covering the many costs associated with make a film, such as, travel and accomodation for the actors and crew, equipment rentals (lights, camera, sound, grip, etc), van and truck rentals, craft services, and catering.

In addition, our specific production has a few special large-ticket budget considerations, namely, a tractor rental and the professional stunt coordinator to make sure our stunt in the end of the film looks amazing, but more importantly, is safe.

WHERE WILL SHALE SCREEN?

The main source of exhibition of short films are film festivals.  They usually play in a compilation of short films or before a feature film at a festival.  Shale will debut at the 2012 Columbia University Film Festival in April.  We also hope for Shale to play at many major festivals across the world.
