This project seeks to distribute heavy-weight (80pt ≈ 2mm thick pulpboard) beverage coasters with a graphic design consisting of 777 decimal digits of pi.
The numbers are arranged in a spiral for contemplation while drinking. Of interest may be the sequence 111 which occurs at position 153-155 (3 o'clock in the 2nd row from edge), the sequence 555 which occurs at position 177-179 (6 o'clock in the 2nd row from edge), the sequence 000 at position 651-653 (3 o'clock in the 5th from from center) and the sequence 999999 which occurs near the center at position 762-767. There is the potential to make an animation of the graphics to enhance interest if there are sufficient initial backers in the first 10 days of the 30 day kickstarter period.
Note that the string 777 does not occur in the first 777 decimal digits. It does not occur until position 1589 and is followed by another 7.
The string 7777777 occurs at position 3346228. This string occurs 23 times in the first 200M digits of Pi.
One side will be white with black digits, and one side will be black with white digits.
Risks and challenges
This project was conceived after the artist saw a clock face which incorrectly listed digits of pi in a spiral shape. After pondering something else useful that could use a similar design a coaster was decided upon, along with the courier font for mechanical spacing. With $777 in backing (subtracting out kickstarter costs) these coasters can become a reality. The graphic announcement is purposefully obscured - the actual graphic will be black and white only without the "sample" watermark. In this case from concept to kickstarter announcement less than 2π hours of development are involved.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
