About

We are looking to expand our business with the aid of a vehicle to cater for events, markets and festivals across the UK. Your donations will bring The Grub and Grog Shop to life!

About The Grub and Grog Shop...

  • Makers of stew, sandwiches and other slow cooked grub matched with homemade and locally sourced grog.
  • Locally sourced, high quality and sustainable ingredients
  • Exciting and unusual flavour combinations with inspiration from all over the world, both past and present
  • Healthy and affordable grub and grog - vegan, nut-free and gluten-free options

How did it all begin?

The idea for stew came about during my time at University in Leeds. Along with my housemates, we made big vats of stew and other slow cooked foods as a way of eating healthily and on the cheap. There'd always be something bubbling away in the kitchen.

As a recession time student, I was inspired to think outside the box regarding my future. As a result, I got creative with my options.

How did you get up and running?

This lead to the beginnings of Made By Jim and with the aid of an entrepreneurs grant I started retailing chutneys and other preserves to various bars and cafes across Leeds city centre. From this I began supplying hot food to venues and the food of choice was inevitably stew.

There is an emphasis on using local, organic and ethical ingredients to produce healthy and affordable food and drink. There is a focus on interesting flavour combinations and unusual ingredients with gluten-free, nut-free and vegan options served at every event.

How do you stand out from the crowd?

Each flavour combination has a story to it and an individual illustrated character. These dishes are versatile and come in different forms such as a stew, sandwich or canapé but use the same ingredients with different methods of cooking. For example the beetroot, chickpea and tamarind stew is also served as a sandwich using the same ingredients but cooked in a different way.

In recent months Made By Jim has become more of a full time business and as a one-man band, expansion and development has been a challenge.

What is The Grub & Grog Shop?

In comes Dan Palmer, now business partner with me for The Grub and Grog Shop. We met whilst working with craft beer, and both had ideas to bring food and drink together in a unique way.

The plan is for our new business to focus on catering for events, markets and festivals, selling a variety of dishes based on the personified flavour combo's featured on our website (www.grubandgrog.co.uk) as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Made By Jim has been integrated into The Grub and Grog Shop and act as a retail aspect to it, continuing to sell stew, chutneys and preserves.

Over the past year we have done several successful events and invested in all the equipment we need to trade. However, we have now reached a point where the lack of a vehicle has become a limitation.

What's next for The Grub & Grog Shop?

We're looking at converting a Land Rover Defender into a mobile kitchen but need that cash injection to get the van and start trading. Being such a reliable vehicle and built for rough terrain it's perfect for those muddy festivals and is a British classic. We will have to be inventive with the conversion and we have some interesting plans in mind, a perfect match for our style of food.

How will you achieve this?

Phase 1: Buying and branding the vehicle to initially use for deliveries for retail products and to attend markets and one-off events.

Phase 2: Converting the vehicle for kitchen use and installing equipment for serving craft beer from keg to attend festivals and other events.

How can I help?

We need your generosity to gain the funds we need and below is a breakdown of what your donations will go towards:

  • Vehicle: £4500.00
  • Branding and decor: £1265.00
  • Fridges: £799.00
  • Total: £6564.00

What will I get in return?

Your support is key to this project's success and in return for your generous donations you will receive bespoke and unique rewards as a thank you. The rewards are listed to the right of the page but below is a more in-depth description of the bespoke gifts:

  • Email me your postal address and I'll send you a personalised thank you card featuring a character illustration.
  • With each donation your name will feature on the website as a founding supporter of the project.
  • The Grub and Grog bank note will feature one of the character illustrations and will be sent to your postal address to be exchanged at one of our events for a dish off our ever-changing menu.
  • The flavour wheel chart illustrates flavour combinations in a wheel format identifying certain flavours that go well together.
  • The bespoke pack of recipe cards features twelve stew recipes from my collection with the corresponding character illustration.
  • The branded wooden spoon is for kitchen use and the logo is laser-cut into the wood.
  • The unique set of playing cards features all the characters relating to the flavour combinations and can be used to play anything from Snap to Go Fish.
  • The heavy duty apron features our logo.
  • For up to five people we will conduct a cooking class with a variety of dishes at a location of your choice within the north of England.
  • The six course meal for up to 10 guests will be based around our ethos of cooking, incorporating a mixture of slow cooked dishes and unusual flavour combinations using local, seasonal ingredients. This include a personalised dish tailored to your taste with a new individual character. We will cook at a location of your choice within the north of England.

Risks and challenges

One main challenge is the seasonality of stew. It's the perfect dish for those cold Autumn and Winter nights but not a typically summery dish. Luckily stews won't be the only thing on the menu. We will also be serving hot sandwiches and wraps using artisan bread from the Leeds Bread Co Op and risotto-type dishes. The menu will change seasonally to suit the weather and availability of ingredients.

Another challenge will be not getting enough bookings. By increasing our retail service, income will be covered by the profits from this aspect of the business. We also plan to sign up to an already established network of catering events called Northern Streats which has an annual subscription.

One of the main risks is relying on the income from the business to pay bills and other living costs. We will both have part-time jobs to cover these out-goings with the profits from the business solely being used to grow and invest. We will not be relying on the business for personal finances.
