WE DID IT!!!!!!!! We're funded! There's still a little time to join us on the ride. If we hit $10,000k (I know, but hey a girl can dream!) I'm throwing in a bookmark and idk?!
Hi there! I'm Stasha, The Period Coach.
I'm the kind of girl who rarely pulls her punches and I often speak the truth no one wants to hear.
The truth is, it's time for women to start using their power, to start our own personal revolution.
AND we need a manifest-a to illuminate how we got here and where to go. To teach us how to tap into our very blood and launch a period packed missile at the patriarchy. It will be uncomfortable, that's GOOD. All change is.
A book FOR women, ABOUT women, BY women on a topic that rarely is talked about openly, honestly, and directly.
We need more women armed with information fighting the good fight. In a way that honors us, without burning out, with the support of our sisters - of every race/creed/religion/sexuality/everything. To leave this world a better place for the girls who come after us.
I don't want them growing up in the dark like we did. With "boys will be boys". Not knowing our own bodies, giving away our power out of ignorance.
This revolution starts in every one of us and we can't do anything about it until we tackle the taboo shrouding the female body, disconnecting us from our primal source of power. Our female body.
Have you felt the heat creep into your face with shame if there was a spot of red, seeping out through your clothes? That's the shame. You've crouched over, found a mirror, a window, something, to see if you were leaking. That's the taboo that's held us back, and that's why this revolution will be bloody!
I'm on a mission to declassify periods. You know, to end the taboo. Because this is the revolution that powers all the others.
This taboo is causing real harm to women around the world. We are kept in the dark about so much, like being on birth control most of our lives, a pill with real dangerous side effects that damage our quality of life, to deal with our period problems. We are shamed into douching, starving ourselves, causing real harm to our bodies for someone else.
Some women die from this taboo, birth control can cause death. Women die from exposure being forced out when they have their bleed.
But I want to focus on what the world would look like if we didn't have this taboo (and write this book to help dismantle it).
First off, if the taboo was gone, there would be studies about women's health. We'd have SO much more insight on how our bodies work and how our hormones interact. Women's bodies and health are grossly under-represented. I'll be sharing what we do know in this book.
If the taboo were gone the #pinktax would be gone. Did you know you most likely pay a luxury tax for your pads/tampons? You spend approximately $3,360 in your menstruating lifetime in just TAX. A LUXURY tax! Now imagine you're a woman who's barely feeding your family. Just because men think it's a luxury item. Seriously there are men in power who think we can turn off our blood, like needing to pee!
Without the taboo the rhythm of your life would run in flow with you. Family outings when you've got lots of energy, family movie night when you are in the more 'cozy' phases of your cycle. Batch cooking in luteal, the running around in follicular, for example.
Did you know the phases of your cycle affect your moods and desires in predictable ways? I'll be sharing this with you in the book.
Work would be easier, you could structure your job to flow with you, scheduling your in person meetings when you're in an extroverted phase of your cycle, working from home on the days you need more rest.
Women would make great strides to being seen as equals, by seeing ourselves as equals. We would hold ourselves in far higher esteem, we would demand better for other women.
Sex would be WAY better. We have a cyclical libido, and without the taboo we would know how to rock orgasms all month long. We wouldn't rush things when we weren't ready and we'd feel far less self-conscious.
Let's be honest. We have all panicked and checked the back of our pants to make sure we haven't bled through. That a fear that someone will know our shameful secret. It's not even conscious. It just is. It's the taboo.
Our periods are the missing piece of the feminism conversation.
We want equality but we're not willing to talk about periods. Feminism isn't about becoming men, it's about women AS WOMEN being seen as equals. That just because our bodies are different from men's doesn't make them a 'thing' to possess, or weaker, or less than.
Different is good.
We need to run TOWARDS our bodies, not away.
But often we are unaware of the taboo, or we don't really know what to do.
That's where this book enters the conversation
If you're anything like me and my friends we're doing everything we can think of. We're calling senators, we're mailing cards, we're making sure our friends are registered to vote. We're marching.
We want to end the patriarchy, not just for us but for the men trapped by it as well. It's not good for any of us. Especially those of us in the minorities, our people of color, our LGBTQI family (of which I am a member), and all marginalized people. There are very very few who this is good for. They have had their time and look what they did with it.
But we don't know what we can do to really make a change.
We have a personal revolution we have to bring into the action. This book will be a guidebook on HOW to make peace with your period. This one action, as small as it might seem, will contribute to dismantling the patriarchy. The patriarchy relies on your shame, being disconnected from your power.
One cannot lead a revolution checking the back of her pants in fear of shame and embarrassment.
Just to reassure you, I've written a book before. It was a book of surreal stories that connected into a bigger story. I loved it. Some of the shorts have been published in various magazines that I'm sure no longer exist. Ah publishing. Currently, I've come out with my period tracker and planner, with my illustrator Chantelle Valerie, every year for the last 3 years. So I get what's about to happen.
At the time of this writing the book is in outline form. As you know things change but here's my plan as of now:
1. Deprogramming The Patriarchy - Real talk, until we can see it we can't change it.
2. The Taboo - A little history through storytelling. Don't read this section before bed. Do read before voting.
3. Power In Our Blood - Your blood has information for you, once upon a time women knew that. This chapter is going to blow your mind and make you wish I'd written this book years ago.
4. Sisterhood As Activism - We need ways to connect, nothing scares the system more than a diverse group of women all working together. We have to build that.
5. #PinkTax - Is your period a luxury? Odds are you're paying luxury tax on your menstrual products. Just one thing we'll be talking about in this chapter.
6. Eco Friendly Alternatives to pads and tampons - There are other options and we're going to talk the pros and cons. My FB group has been through this conversation more times than I can even guess. I'm bringing it all here to you in one easy place.
7. The Glass Ceiling AKA $$$ Talks - We need to have a legit conversation about women making real money and how that will change the world. I will also cover how to make more money in FLOW with your cycle.
8. Charting Your Revolution - I'm going to teach you how to pay attention to your cycle without making yourself crazy. You'll be mad you didn't start doing this years ago.
9. Phases Of The Cycle - Straight up, what's going on in your body. Every day you're in a phase of your cycle and something awesome could be happening if you only know about it. What they should be teaching in school!
10. LifeStyle - There's an art to living in flow. Yes, you can have everything. You can be an activist without burning out (or burning your bra, unless you want to). I will teach you how to do that.
11. SelfCare - Yep. I said it. And I'll say it again and again until you hear me. There are some things you can do to take care of yourself and your hormones that will make your life easier and more enjoyable, you can even get rid of PMS. Why wouldn't you?
12. Pleasure Container - If you don't learn how to expand your capacity for pleasure you can't fight the good fight, you can't make more money, get more rights, or find a true partner. You'll limit yourself somewhere and the world needs ALL of you.
13. Mindset - A personal revolution is a bit like getting healthier. You will fall off the wagon from time to time. But with this mindset nothing can stop you in the long run. Even yourself.
This book will be full of little ways you can make big change. You'll get downloads too, things you can actually use to make your journey easier.
The graphics included depend on how much we raise!
At the moment $7k is my estimate on getting a basic book out to you. I may do print on demand for international orders to make this work.
Did you know publishing a book is a huge investment?
To make this book and get it into your hands I need to cover the costs of:
- Kickstarter fees
- Publishing Services
- Structural and Copy Editing - at least $2,000 for this book!
- Proofreading (I can't spell)
- Artwork and cover design
- Book formatting
- Marketing and publicity
The $7k timeline I set is estimated 6 months to write the book, ready for the editor, 4 months for printing prep (like formating digital and print versions, etc) and finish editing. 2 months to print and ship.
With $7k I will need to keep my business going full time BUT if we can exceed the goal, I'll be able to take more time to just work on the book, and hopefully have it to you sooner!
$10k - I'll send everyone a bookmark to go with the book. (as long as you're backing at a level that's getting the book shipped).
I spent 20 years with horrific periods. The kind that have you throwing up for days the pain is so bad. The kind that a hot water bottle and a cozy comforter are of no comfort. If I didn't get a serious narcotic in me before the wave of pain and puking hit I was screwed completely.
I spent my periods on the floor of my bathroom. In the tub with scalding hot water. Praying for death. The only time I've really wanted a deity to exist so desperately.
Here's the catch, often I'd pass out right before my blood came. So in high school that meant collapsing in front of my locker. Or in the middle of English class. When I'd come to, someone would ask what happened, I'd say something like 'oh I musta gotten my period' only to be met with 'TMI! I didn't need to know that!'.
What was I supposed to say?
I'm on the floor, having just passed out, in SERIOUS pain, and I have to think of a lie quickly to protect your feelings?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING?
Not when you're in high school and not one of the cool kids, and just trying to survive the assaults and stalkers and everything else. So I lied.
Years later I'm running a business helping other women balance their hormones, having figured out what was wrong with me and how to fix it. I was burning out, my period was getting bad again even though I was doing everything "Right".
I realized it wasn't me that was the problem. It's this freaking TABOO.
That I needed to stop trying to prove myself as a tough business owner who can work 12 hour days every day. This taboo is KILLING women, and was taking me down with it.
So I started purposefully living my life like a WOMAN would live her life. If the patriarchy didn't exist. What did I have to prove to a bunch of dudes? Nothing.
This changed everything for me. I want to change everything for you too.
Me with last year's charting book.
I'm even writing this book IN FLOW! You really can do anything once you're tapped into your power.
Risks and challenges
This book isn't written yet. It's outlined, it's even got paragraphs but it's not written. I've written a book before, and I publish a planner every year so don't worry that I won't write it. I'm just not sure exactly how long it will take to get it from in my head and partially on paper, to on a computer, edited, formatted, printed and to you. Also if we exceed the budget for the editor and basic cover art I'd love to hire some kick ass artists to create more visuals for the book, print in color, that sort of thing. So we'll see how this does!
If this kickstarter does really well, I'll start looking up artists immediately and get myself a book coach to keep me on track and timely. I'll have an editor start sooner in the process as well so this can be a really speedy book. I know this content I just need help. The more help I can get the quicker it will be in your hands.
I will keep you in the loop of it's progress including but not limited to snippets from the drafts as I go.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
