About

New Orleans is a talented and musical city, but sometimes walking down Bourbon street you see cover bands playing to empty rooms, or terribly mismatched bands playing on Frenchmen street where half the audience ends up leaving. Recent local noise ordinances and crack downs really make it sometimes feel like performing arts in New Orleans are under attack.

If only there was some way to fill every venue every night, to discover great unknown performers and get them stage time, to make every night a "special event", and to fight back and to keep the local music and performing arts scene lively and vibrant.

EatEat is a community based internet tool in New Orleans which allows local live performers to easily create a free profile which keeps track of gigs, and allows them to easily build a performance profile and online resume.

At the same time, it also allows venues, booking agents, record labels, talent agents and others paying members the ability to peruse a library of artists, see their credentials and gig history, and watch/listen to clips of their act online.

There are a few websites that already do this, but they are all terrible, lack many of EatEat's features, and are not locally focused.

In addition to the core function of the site, there are other functions that will make the site a "killer app":

* The site will provide information on venues that performers cannot get anywhere else (as a performer, it would be good to know stage size and house equipment for example).

* Two way rating system -  A 5 star type rating system where the venue can rate things like the performance quality and draw of the act, and the performer can rate things like the cleanliness, and professionalism of the venue.

* Social Media Integration / Earn badges! - Win badges for your EatEat profile by performing gigs. Allows people to easily become Facebook fans, give thumbs up, contribute performance pics, and become followers on Twitter

* Advertising, Publicity, Exposure! - get a featured artist profile on EatEat, also links to get discounts at local print shops for printing flyers and banners, make band T-shirts, CDs, and other merch, and hire flyering crews

* Many more features!

Risks and challenges

ReverbNation.com, StubHub.com and BandsInTown.com all provide a similar service nationally.

Pros: Good set of tools (built in player to sample bands), nationwide focus, strong following

Cons: The national focus makes the "local" search and experience underwhelming, no sense of "curating" or editorial vetting of the artists, focus only on music not on performing arts as a whole, no ratings system, only basic information about venues, poor community building/social media integration, no way to recognize or discover undiscovered talent, no custom tailored events calendar, no way to book artists, many of the big sites are out of date with closed venues and defunct acts

In addition, many venues and bands are connecting through craigslist.

Besides competition, there are risks that local musicians in New Orleans do not use smart phones, laptops, and leverage the internet like performers in other parts of the US.

Word of mouth is the best advertising and the traditional way to book bands in New Orleans. EatEat plans to capitalize on this and start buzz by advertising both in flyers, and advertising in local music magazines.

    We have no idea yet how many people will come or how many talented local artists will be there, so it makes it difficult to plan a venue, set a date, or know for sure which artists will be there, but you can expect an a great time and some awesome live performances. (Sorry kids, it will very likely be a 21+ venue).
