THANK YOU SO MUCH! Rogues to Riches IS A REALITY!
You guys really rock. I had no idea we would get so far with this campaign. I'm really looking forward to putting this game in your hands! I'm also looking forward to working with some of you on new cards! That will be a lot of fun.
This was my first campaign and it's been an exciting, stressful, ultimately humbling experience. Kickstarter is a great community! I can't wait to launch my next campaign!
Hi there, my name is Sam and I designed Rogues to Riches. I've been working on this game for over 12 years and I'm very close to bringing it out into the world. With Rogues to Riches, I've tried to make a game that gives you the player more freedom to do whatever you want than any other game, outside of a pen and paper RPG, and I think I've succeeded. Even though I've played this game hundreds of times, I'm constantly surprised and delighted by the inventiveness of the players.
Thanks for reading, and if you have any questions or concerns please drop me a line in the comments.
The lighting is dim, the bartender is giving the counter one last wipe as he suspiciously eyes your table. You give him a glance to let him know that you aren’t planning on leaving any time soon. The people you are with represent the best of the criminal underground - thieves, bandits and burglars who have seen and done it all.
You’re all swapping stories of last night’s exploits. One of you broke into the Alchemy Lab to steal the Philosopher’s Stone, while someone else came face to face with the Governor, armed with his filigreed rapier, while attempting to steal his riches.
But who is telling false tales and who is telling the truth? Can you convince your friends that you successfully stole the riches, or will they call it a bluff?
It’s time to think like a criminal mastermind. Pull up a chair, gather round, and tell your tales of Rogues to Riches.

I met the Spiel des Jahres chairman during his visit to the Board Room Game Cafe in Halifax NS, as part of his cross-Canada tour. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down with him and play a game of Rogues to Riches. Afterward, he said that he's never played a game like it before. That was so great to hear!
*** Rogues to Riches used to be called Gentlemen Thieves, that's why Jarek and JT refer to the game using that name. The rules have been revised to incorporate the feedback raised by these reviews. ***
Rogues to Riches is a storytelling card game for 3-5 players, ages 8 and up. Duration: 15 minutes per player.

You have four Gear cards in your hand at the start of your turn. You must use those cards to steal the Riches in one of the other players' Lairs. These Lairs are protected by Traps. To defeat each Trap, you must devise a plan using the Gear in your hand to get past, then convince the other players that your plan worked.
The defender of the Lair you are attacking has a chance to shoot down your plan using logic and details from the Trap card and Lair. The other observing players then vote the plan up or down.
The attacker rolls two dice for the Fate Roll, which is then modified up and down according to the votes. If the result is greater than a 9, then the attacker succeeds and moves closer to stealing the Riches.
Each Lair is defended by three Traps. You must defeat each Trap in order to successfully make off with the Riches. When the Riches are stolen, the Lair is removed but the defender stays in the game. The game ends when there is only one Lair left on the board. The player that has beaten the most Traps combined with stealing the most Riches is declared the undisputed Criminal Mastermind.
Rogues to Riches is a storytelling card game, but unlike other storytelling games, it presents you with a problem to solve, in the form of a Trap card, and then gives you a few possible ways, i.e. the Gear cards, to solve it. It is not as open ended as a traditional role playing game or other storytelling games on the market. Rogues to Riches is more focussed, allowing for hilarious and imaginative stories to emerge, and also rewarding clever problem solving.
Often your hand of Gear cards holds a really obvious way to defeat a Trap. You can go right ahead for the easy win, but the temptation to elaborate on your stories with extra details or to try something completely unexpected is strong. It's up to you.
The blank cards add a new layer to the game. You can use them as wild cards, or you can write your idea down and immortalize your new card into the deck. Other players who draw the Gear card you created will find imaginative new ways to use it that you never even thought of. Likewise, the new Traps you create will be defeated in a whole bunch of different ways you never expected. When the blanks are used, you get to see another side of your opponents that you don't usually see when playing other games.
I've received a lot of support from the gaming community here in Halifax. The experience I've had here has told me that there are a lot of other players around the world who would enjoy this game. I want to bring Rogues to Riches to any player, retailer, or distributor who is interested in giving it a try.
I will use the funds from this Kickstarter campaign to make as many copies of the game as possible. I already have contacts with Canadian distributors. It won't be long before Rogues to Riches is on shelves across the country.
$1 = Thank You Email and The Print and Play Version. You'll get a zip file containing PDFs of the rules and about half the cards and Lairs available in the complete game. Plus a nice email saying thanks. Note: Some of the design elements in the Print and Play version are left over from the days when the game was known as Gentlemen Thieves.
$10 = Signed Card in the Mail. I'll send you a Rogues to Riches card in the mail, signed by me and artist Julianne Harnish. Your card might be one that's not available in the PNP version. You can choose a Trap, Gear, or Riches card. Includes PNP files.
$35 = Early Bird Game Reward. The first 50 people to sign up will receive a cheaper copy of the game. Canada, US, and Western Europe only. Includes PNP files. These are gonna go quick.
$43 = Game Reward Tier. One pristine copy of Rogues to Riches. May it brighten your days. Canada, the US, and Western Europe only. Includes PNP files.
$80 = TWO Pristine copies of Rogues to Riches. Leave one in shrink as a collectible. Play one into the ground. Give a copy to your favourite nephew. Sell one at a markup to your luddite friend. Includes PNP files.
$100 = Hand Drawn Creation. Starting with a blank card, artist Julianne Harnish will draw and send you a unique Gear or Trap card of your design to be included in your copy of Rogues to Riches. Includes one copy of the game and the PNP files.
$100 = The International Gamer. Two copies of Rogues to Riches. Only available outside Canada, the US, and Western Europe (see Shipping Details below). PNP files included.
$175 = Design your own Gear Card. Your own innovative invention will become part of the game. You and I will work together on the text and content of the card so that it does not unbalance the game. Julianne Harnish will provide the artwork. You'll also get a copy of the game. Includes PNP files.
$175 = Design your own Trap Card. Your own devious obstacle will become part of the game. You and I will work together on the text and content of the card so that it does not unbalance the game. Julianne Harnish will provide the artwork. You'll also get a copy of the game. Includes PNP files.
$200 = The Visual Storyteller. A three panel printed comic, illustrated by artist Julianne Harnish, of a Rogues to Riches scenario of your invention. For example, the scenario in the video with the Powerful Magnets vs. the Head Chef in the Boiler Room Tavern would make a great comic. The Professor in the Ivy Academy often shows up in hilarious ways, once as "Doctor Professorstein", that would look awesome in a short comic. Or the time one playtester hypnotized the room full of snakes using his pocketwatch and led them on a path of destruction through the rest of the Lair. Includes one copy of Rogues to Riches and PNP files.
$250 = Design your own Lair. Your own crazy location will become part of the game. You and I will work together on the text and content of the card so that it does not unbalance the game. Julianne Harnish will provide the artwork. You'll also get a copy of the game. Includes PNP files.
$250 = The Retail Tier. This'll get you 10 copies of Rogues to Riches shipped to you, the best FLGS for miles around. Plus a nifty display to show it off to your wide-eyed customers.
$300 = An Evening with the Designer. With this reward, you and your friends will be entertained by none other than me Sam, the designer of Rogues to Riches. I will show you earlier versions of the game, demonstrate new prototypes I'm working on, gush about other games I'm keen on, and generally be charming for the duration of an evening. Includes one copy of Rogues to Riches and the PNP files. You'll have to bring yourself here to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to claim this reward. Travel and accommodation not included.
Shipping is included in all reward levels except for the $250 Retail Tier.
The $35 Early Bird Tier and $43 Game Reward Tier are only available to backers in Canada, the US, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, UK, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden. Outside of these countries the Fulfillment by Amazon costs increase considerably.
The $100 International Gamer Tier incorporates the fulfillment cost for backers in countries outside of those listed above. Shipping two games at once does not double the shipping costs, and so the difference between shipping one twice and shipping two together enables me to offer free shipping to international backers.
The $100 and $175 card creation tiers also come with a game, so you might find really good value in those levels.
If successful, the money raised will cover the costs of a 1,000 unit print run from Printninja.com. If I raise more, I will manufacture more units.
Rogues to Riches is a jam-packed game with a lot of content. The box will come with at least the following:
As card creation rewards are backed and as stretch goals are achieved, more stuff will get jammed into the box!
A couple of local papers have picked up on my crazy exploits. Have a look and see what they have to say:

Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter project (of many I hope!) and though I've done my research (thanks stonemaiergames.com!) and have a great team of people helping me, I may have overlooked something or there may be surprises. I've built in a 5% contingency amount into the goal to cover these unexpected costs.
Shipping and fulfillment costs are always tricky. I'll be fulfilling orders using a combination of Amazon, Swish, and Starlit Citadel.
It's possible that I will be affected by some delays after the campaign. I'll be doing another design layer, including the box design, card backs and templates, and rulebook design, which could take some time. Hopefully, I'll be working with several backers to create new cards and Lairs, and that may take some time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
