Update #5: Pirate Ships and Barbarian Camps

Posted by Matt Colville (Creator)

We're gonna get Pirate Ship strongholds! Mostly they're like a Barbarian Camp that can raid coastal towns and generate revenue!

      Two more ideas for stongholds,

"Hideout" is the cheapest one you can get, a hidden cave, abandoned homestead, unused basement, or even the summer home of someone wealthy in winter. It costs nothing (or close to it). requires periodic Deception, Stealth, or Survival checks to make sure no one -else- finds it, and can't be upgraded with specialists, but can be with equipment. It lets PCs lie low in relative safety, and gives a bonus to healing, crafting PCs own stuff, and a temporary place to store gear/loot.

"Dungeon" The stronghold for NPCs and Evil Campaigns. Put in weird and "bad" build options. Grants notoriety, attracts monstrous minions, and high value loot from dumb adventurers that try to raid it.

I have a general question - a stronghold is obviously something that mid-higher level PCs can have, and would be involved with , and generate wealth based on taxation, economy, trade, etc. That makes 100% sense in the right context, but my question is: how does/could the stronghold concept fit into a campaign where you are playing periodically but the campaign is linearly story-focused and downtime isn't a mechanic.

Maybe the answer is “it doesn’t make sense in my campaign”, with is cool, but I think there’s room to incorporate strongholds I hope. I am a backer and gung-ho for the final product, and know the meat of the project/campaign won't be given away in the comments, but as a curious (and admittedly rookie) DM is there a way I can preemptively plan to incorporate the concept of a stronghold now, and the needed mechanics as it relates to a story-driven campaign? Cheers!

Oh, never mind on the Dragonborn. Kobold Press has that covered, though that's a company you might approach if you're looking for anyone to partner with. Wolfgang has LOTS of experience doing Kickstarter and Kickstarter-like projects. Just tell him Doomedpaladin sent you.

Here's KP's Gem Dragonborn btw, written by James J. Haeck:

@Doug Coughler **nods** That's what I'm saying! ANYTHING old, buy a replacement, NEW!

14 days, 2 mil is certainly possible considering how this project has grown. Matt could line up basically anything he wants in-hobby. Art, designers, writers, editors, publishing. Once he has the cash in hand he can go to most companies (Hasbro/WotC might not be impressed) and any bank and use the interest shown in this as proof of value for anything he can think of going forward. If he has something he's not interested in doing himself he can hire/partner with someone else to develop it.

      So excited for him!

Hey Matt, how about some Gem Dragon Dragonborn race traits?

Matt I sent you an email with some photos of a 28mm Pirate Ship we would love to send you for the Campaign.

Hey Matt, would a Dwarven city like Gauntlgrym be covered by something like a keep or would it need its own category, and if so can that be a potential further stretch goal?

    7. Aaron Liu on

Are we going to get beta/play test versions before it's released, and if so is there a schedule? I ask this because one of my players is dead set on building up Phandalin after we finished LMoP so this would be really useful!!!

Now I'm dreaming of Critical Role + the 2 Matts + Kickstarter

    9. Doug Coughler

@DoomedPaladin I'm not sure what the costs are where Matt hails, but for $2M, he might be able to buy a space instead of renting it.

@Jose Agreed, you dont get Matt voice when you read a text update, Matt voice best voice.

    11. Dan Burrington on

@DW, I feel you, but most everyone that came here knows him from Youtube. It's kinda his thing.

I enjoy these video updates more then text. I perfer to watch a video of Matt explaining everything then a wall of text. Thank Matt for being you.

More text less video please? Am I an alien who only likes text? Sigh. I guess it isn't as exciting in my inside-head reading voice.

I wonder what your 2 million stretch goal will be? Do you have and underdark stronghold yet? Planar? Race-flavored?

How much do special guests cost for your show? New video cameras, or even a new building?

A book of concept art and design notes would be cool. Again I suggest looking up some classic artists like DiTerlizzi or Lockwood and getting full pieces or maybe just line art drawings.

    15. Mike O'Regan on

Congrats Matt, looking forward to the book very much. Delighted for your success, it's well deserved.

I'm sure it would be tempting to add more stretch goals since the money's going up and up but the time to get stuff done isn't, so stick with what you have and don't over stretch yourself. Quality over quantity. :-)

Legend tells of a man standing behind Roman generals during their Triumph parades, whispering "Remember thou art mortal" into their ears. It's not true, but it should be.

      Looks great!

You should add yet more stretch goals!
Ideas - add “racial” modifiers to strongholds!
Deep, firy dungeons for evil Tieflings, mines for Dwarves, forest for Elves, that sort of stuff :D

Matt - awesomeness, looking forward to it! I'm actually launching my own Kickstarter for 3d-printable tabletop airships in a few weeks - obviously the "pirate ship" can apply to most things for an airship as well but there's some slight differences. Any chance you will have a few airship specific rules included? Keep it up!
