Hi and thanks for reading this! I like you.
I write songs and would love to record a new album full of them, with your help! Listen to some clips below if you like! And/or if you want to read more, here's more info about what I'm doing here...
IN MORE DETAIL:
I've been a musician my whole life, playing the violin since I was 4 and then guitar since 15.
I've been writing songs for over 20 years and I want to share some of them. I've released music before, but since I became a standup comedian 13 years ago, most of my professional creative energies have been focused there more than producing music albums.
But I've decided that I can do more than one thing at a time, so this is my first official non-comedy music album in a while!
STILL READING? THANKS! WE'RE DOING GREAT!
My plan is for the album to be at least 12 original songs, maybe more. I've written a lot that I'm considering using but also you could inspire a new one if you like (check the rewards)! I may include some older recordings as bonus tracks as well, but for certain, you'll get 12 original as-yet-unreleased songs that I've written for your ears and brains and hearts (or stomachs or wherever, up to you).
How will I do it?
Well, here's an example of a song I wrote recently for my girlfriend and recorded just into my computer on my own. It's called "Business":
Now, my friend Sam is a wonderful sound engineer/composer/musician I've known for decades. He has agreed to help produce and engineer and do all the official sound things that aren't playing the songs. He'll make it sound way better than if I were just doing it on my own without his skills.
For example, here's a song he helped me produce about 20 years ago, when we were both kids. It's called "Vegetables":
In the past 20 years, things that have improved include A) Sam's abilities, B) my abilities, and C) technology. So, while I think teenage us did a pretty good job with what we had, grown-up us will do even better with what exists now...
In fact, because Sam has spent the last many years working professionally in the world of sound, here are a couple newer samples of music he has written and recorded, to give you an idea of what he's capable of these days (and while these pieces are not necessarily similar stylistically to each other or to what my music will sound like, they will hopefully give you an idea as to part of his creative musical range):
WE'RE ALMOST THERE!
In addition to Sam's services, I will enlist photographer/artist friends to provide the visuals for the album... I have some wonderful folks in my rolodex (if rolodexes are still a thing) ready to help, and am excited about how it will look as well as how it well sound!
So, I know who will do all the things. Now I just need the money to pay those people for those things... Because they're my friends, they are glad to provide what time they have, but because they're professionals who also need to eat and pay rent, I want to pay them fairly. Sound engineering and official photo/artwork can both cost lots of money, but everyone is offering their services very reasonably!
Sam's reasonable rate is $50 an hour, and our goal will be to get one song done per 1-1.5 hours, so if we do that, that's up to $900. Plus if we have more time and money, we can get more songs done, or do cooler things to the songs we make. Quality and quantity!
The rest of the money will go to the visual art and myself for my time (I'll be doing some work on this as well). Plus there might be some unforeseen expenses, equipment needs, etc., and it might take more hours to do all the recording then planned. Also, Kickstarter takes some fees so they can keep this nice business they are running... so that's why I've set the target where it is.
I hope that all makes sense, and you like this idea and me and my music and you share it with everyone and I have to write seven billion thank yous. Regardless, I wish you the best in everything. Thanks for reading all the words and giving some of the dollars.
WE DID IT! SINCERE APPRECIATION!
Risks and challenges
I am confident that I can accomplish this goal if everything goes according to plan.
Ways it MIGHT not go according to plan could include either of my collaborators becoming too busy with other super awesome projects which would make them have less time to help in the desired time frame... If that happens, one of two things will happen: 1) the project will take slightly longer than desired, or 2) I will find another friendly/worthy collaborator to step in and assist.
It shouldn't be too complicated. With your help, I'll be able to make this happen and hooray thanks!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
