The InTuition - A Carbon Fiber Pen/Stylus for the Hi-Tec-C Refill
A quick change refill and high performance Wacom Bamboo nib makes for a long lasting & durable instrument.
What the reviewers are saying...
"The InTuition ... brings together a uniquely-patterned carbon fiber body and shiny titanium ends. The result is a very high-tech look that is a perfect companion for today’s tablet computers and smartphones." - Aestheticrit.com
"This isn't just a carbon fiber shell over a metal-frame pen. That would be disappointing. This is an honest-to-grapes carbon fiber pen. It's lightweight and serious about its business." - Gourmet Pens
"At a time when tech lovers endure the planned obsolescence of products they use, it's great to see an IOS stylus that won't end up in a landfill when its tip gets beat up or its pen runs out of ink... the InTuition has the potential to outlast many of its competitors." - PadGadget
Meet the InTuition... a combination pen and tablet stylus made from Carbon Fiber composite and Titanium.
This combination of Titanium & Carbon Fiber provides the best balance of strength and specific stiffness… which is meaningless when making a pen, but definitely gives it a high coolness factor. The InTuition is very lightweight, however and nicely balanced.
I’ve designed it to accommodate the highly regarded Pilot Hi-Tec-C inserts, available in widths from 0.25 to 0.5 mm & in over thirty colors. For those of you who may not be familiar with the Hi-Tec-C, check here for a review of the Hi-Tec-C by Jetpens. The Hi-Tec-C provides a smooth consistent line, and is ideal for sketching, drawing or everyday writing tasks.
The body of the InTuition is made from centerless ground, Carbon twill fiber tubing and I have found that as time goes by, the Carbon Fiber picks up the oils from your skin and gives each pen a subtle, translucent finish which highlights the twill pattern of the Carbon Fiber material.
There are a total of five additional major parts in the InTuition, all made from aircraft grade Titanium.
On the front end, a threaded insert and cap provide for a quick change of a refill.
At the rear, there’s an interface to mount a standard Wacom Bamboo Stylus nib.
Available in firm or soft, the Bamboo nib provides a very responsive feel for use with your iPad or other tablet PC. It’s nice because the Wacom nib is available from a variety of sources, including online suppliers and office supply stores.
The machined metal cap fits on either the front or rear of the pen. The O-rings on each end provide a resilient interface so the cap stays secure, but can be removed easily.
Each part of the InTuition has been carefully designed and toleranced to ensure that not only will each part perform as required, but that you will be ensured that our pen will not suffer with ill fitting parts that bind or become difficult to use over time.
Our partner for the fabrication of the metal parts for the InTuition is the Gent Machine Company, here in Cleveland, Ohio. The Gent family have been making tens of thousands of precision parts annually for nearly 100 years.
The parts for the InTuition will be custom made on automatic, high precision Swiss screw machines, which are designed to produce many identical copies of a part.
I’ll be running this project through my company, e4 Labs. As a consultant mechanical engineer, I have been designing and building products for the aerospace and military for nearly 30 years and completely understand the effects of tolerancing and fabrication on making a product repeatable and reliable.
Unfortunately, this project won't be complete until after the holiday season. Let me know if this is a gift, and if it looks like the project will be fully funded, I'll send you a glossy photo card so you'll have something to put under the tree. In any respect, a fully funded project should be delivering rewards sometime in late January 2013.
The replacement refills and stylus nibs are available online, and we plan on offering them together with replacement parts after the project has been funded.
Anyway, thanks for looking and I hope you'll participate!!
Risks and challenges
I have spent weeks studying all aspects of the design for the InTuition Pen/Stylus. I have located a fully qualified US vendor for the carbon fiber tubing I have designed into the product. During the design and prototyping cycle, I have worked with this vendor to create a uniform, smooth and repeatable outside diameter tube to create a professional looking and comfortable feeling product.
The design of the Titanium parts have gone through three prototyping cycles and several interations with the local family owned machine shop I have chosen, Gent Machine. Adam and Rich at Gent represent the third generation of high quality, precision machining legacy, and their modern Davenport and Swiss Screw Machines routinely and repeatedly produce parts with the tolerances required to achieve a high quality result.
A full tolerance analysis has been performed to ensure that each part is toleranced properly to ensure the correct fit, function and feel of the pen when it gets to you. believe it or not, the most tightly held tolerance in the pen is the groove depth of the O-Ring grooves to ensure that the cap interface is simple, easy and reliable.
The assembly of each pen/stylus is accomplished with self fixturing features on each of the parts, so the chance of mis-alignments and poor fitting of parts is greatly reduced. The bond line thickness and application of the epoxy bonding material is regulated by a feature on the metal parts, so a simple table top production line setup is envisioned whereby we will be applying epoxy, assembling the parts and allowing them to cure for at least 24 hours before final assembly and shipment to you.
As for order fulfillment, well, it just so happens that I come from a long line of family owned mail order business people. Packaging, shipping and order tracking are a standard part of everything that we have ever done, so your order is sure to be filled correctly and on time... or we'll make it right.
Project progress updates will sent regularly including milestones such as material ordering, receipt of materials, photos of our table top production line as well as expected ship dates as all of the materials are received. In short, you'll be aware every step of the way and have visbility into every phase of the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
