Chris Dupont is working on his much-anticipated release, "Anxious Animal." Intimate, melodic, dynamic tunes, recorded in unique spaces.
Dear family and friends!
I am making a record that I need you to hear.
Last spring, I wrote a handful of songs very quickly, and they turned out to be the most honest, stripped-down, intimate pieces I had ever come up with.
I started playing them at shows before they even had real song titles. Some were given hastily chosen "working titles," like "Scare the Bear" and "Worry the Wolf." Strangely enough, listeners latched onto the titles and found a mythology in these songs that I didn't even know was there. My band and I affectionately deemed this collection of songs "Anxious Animal."
These tunes have made strong, instant connections with my listeners. I can not wait to get them onto a CD and into your headphones.
I'm already hard at work laying down tracks. I have a fantastic band of collaborators, and a handful of great audio engineers helping bring the project to life. We've been setting up audio gear in church spaces and peculiar rooms all over Washtenaw county. Most of the sounds on this album will feature beautiful natural room reverb. The tracks are already sounding fantastic.
The visual component of "Anxious Animal" will also be quite special. I'm creating the album artwork out of my drawings and paintings. There's nothing quite like a great album housed in a great artifact. Remember back in the 90's when we used to go buy a new CD, then sit on the floor holding the paper lyrics jacket, staring at it until the album was done spinning? I intend to make you want to do that.
But here's where I need your help. Funds raised through Kickstarter will cover the costs of producing, duplicating, and promoting this album. With your help, "Anxious Animal" can be released in summer 2012. I don't want to wait much longer, and I hope you don't either! I can't wait to get this completed. Thank you so much for your love and support!
Well, I'm making the artwork. Animals are the only thing I know how to draw.
Kidding! Last spring, I wrote a bunch of tunes, and gave them fun working titles like "Scare the Bear," and drew sketchy little pictures in my lyrics books to accompany the tunes. Then the song collection just started feeling like a good idea for a concept album, and listeners started really latching onto the idea. So I ran with it, and kept the theme going.
The metaphors are definitely there. "Worry the Wolf" was written about sustaining love, and wolves are some of the more monogamous creatures in the animal world. Also, wolf packs are sweet.
I will be mixing the record for the most part, but I'll definitely be consulting and collaborating with many respected musicians and sound engineers, to get "second opinions" and stuff like that. To save myself from ear fatigue and insanity.
So far, it's:
Chris Dupont: vocals, guitars, piano, percussion.
Betsy King: vocals
Katie Van Dusen: violin, percussion
Sarah Paquet: cello
Nick Rifken: drums
Sam Collins: bass
Brian Surguine: guitars
I've also gotten lots of great recording assistance from Nick Nagurka and Eric Huntley. Many more people have volunteered to get on board and/or play stuff, so there will be lots of love and noise in this thing.
You're seeing me talking at my favorite cafe, Beezy's on Washington St. in Ypsilanti. The beautiful cathedral-esque Church is St. John the Baptist in Ypsi. The drum recording still shots are held in Huron Hills Church in Ann Arbor. I'm also walking around in some woods.
I set a goal that covers the bare bones of getting the project produced, mastered, and duplicated. If we go over the goal, this opens doors for better advertising, better promotion, and also compensation for the band members who have volunteered their time and ability to the recording process. Plus, why not get all this cool stuff before anyone else?
