Our new shaving bowl and brush handle are hand turned in Leicester from a single English horse chestnut tree planted in 1710.
The tree came down naturally in the storms last winter. When it was just a sapling the world was a little different...
The rebuilding from the Great Fire of London was nearly finished, Istanbul had just lost out to Beijing as the largest city on the planet and Blackbeard was still sailing the seven seas. Yes, there was a Blackbeard. His real name was Ed.
When you lather up with our natural juniper scented shaving soap using our soft synthetic shaving brush, you’ll be holding hand-turned wood that is 70 years older than the USA.
On the bottom you’ll find a set of GPS co-ordinates. So you can use satellites in space to position yourself to exactly the spot where the tree grew. Blackbeard would have been so impressed he’d have had a shave. Probably.
Our rewards range from a voice in the process and a morning coffee, to a hand made box for your new shaving gear.
But of course the main event is the three hundred year old bowl, soap and brush rewards.
A Razor for the Globe Trotter
We're proud to introduce a new reward level: the Travel Reward, which feature our Travel Razor, a complete traditional all metal safety razor that fits into a matchbox.
Get the Set
Three rewards to look out for are the 'Complete Set' rewards, which feature the Mark One or the engraved, limited run Mark K razor, and the travel razor as well as the brush, soap and bowl set.
To learn more about our razors, visit http://www.thomasclipper.com/our-razors/ - please note that only the Mark K reward level will come with engraving.
We started Thomas Clipper to make your morning better.
Our first razors were launched on Kickstarter last year. We reached, and surpassed, our last funding goal just over six months ago.
That was just the beginning - and we didn't want the conversation with our backers to end, so we asked them what we should make next...
The people have spoken...
They told us overwhelmingly that they wanted the the best looking, best shaving, ethically produced shaving bowl, soap and brush.
So that’s what we’ve been producing over the past 6 months.
We started with timber from the Boughton Estate in rural England. It was planted next to the lake by the Second Duke of Montagu around 1710. We think he would have rather liked what we’re doing with it.
Hand turned wood, hand made soap
Hand crafted into a perfectly formed bowl in Leicester, we laser etch the GPS co-ordinates of the tree stump (the brown patch in the photo above, or visit on google here). So if you’re in the Midlands in August when the house is open to visitors, you can find the exact spot where your bowl began life three centuries ago.
After being turned, each bowl is filled with lightly scented natural juniper shaving soap, made by hand by a team of fantastic ladies on the English seaside. Once you've used up the soap in your bowl (we've not even made a dent on the prototype bowls yet - it's really long lasting stuff) you'll be able to buy refills, hand made by the same ladies in Norfolk.
The final stage...
This is paired with soft, synthetic shaving brush made from the same wood and turned by Richard.
The brush handle design is inspired by the cork from our first bottle of Jenkyn Place English sparkling wine. It's still in the final stages of prototyping, we're experimenting with three new bristle options, so the loft and diameter of the knot might change a little if we can make it lather even better. Or we might find that we've already hit the nail on the head. We'll keep you posted either way.
Upgrading Your Shave
These three new elements are designed to compliment your Thomas Clipper shaving set, and to complete your shave. To learn more about the art (and benefits) of brush shaving take a look at the video below and visit the blog article we wrote here.
Completing the shave
Being clean shaven today is optional - it’s something we choose to do. We’re not shaving as often, but when we do, we’re learning to do it better. Shaving with a Thomas Clipper razor is the first step in saying goodbye to plastic and taking back your morning.
Pairing it with a shaving set handmade from the best materials for the job, sourced so meticulously that you can trace the exact spot your bowl and brush started life three hundred years ago, makes for an even better start to the day.
Finally some words of thanks...

To the people who helped us make the video and the campaign, and to all of you for watching, sharing and backing. Thank you all!
Risks and challenges
Our last campaign worked because we put in a great deal of planning before hitting 'GO'. The same will be the case here.
Nevertheless, there are challenges associated with making hand-crafted natural projects. Chief of these is that there is only one tree we're using to make these products. When the tree runs out we'll have to ask Nigel to find us another of suitable heritage and quality - of course we'll keep you posted on this as we go.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
