Hello, my name is Lucia.
Thank you for visiting my Kickstarter page. I am a singer/songwriter raising money to produce a music video for my new original song: How the Moon Made Me. Please enjoy the short film clip (above) and read on for more details.
MAKING THE MUSIC VIDEO
Behind every great music video is a song and behind every great song is a story. I am weaving these elements together to make something unique and special. The lyrics to the chorus will give you a feel for the theme of my song:
Let me spread my wings they will carry me / As midnight strikes against the sea / I'll escape from the rules of gravity / How the moon made me
Unlike a performance music video that focuses on the artist/band performing the song, my project is a story video, meaning it has a detailed script, plot, characters, story line and arch. This is a rite of passage story about a young woman - a fisherman's daughter - and her relationship to the moon. She never knew her mother but feels connected to her through the moon. It is this connection that gives her the courage to follow her heart during the tender transition from adolescence to adulthood. I have been developing the script for over a year now.
I have also been collecting visual references for the look, feel, mood, locations and props that I see in this film. You can see some of them posted here and explore them all on my Pinterest board.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT ME
I am personally funding the studio recording of the song with my own income so I ask your support to cover the following hard production costs for making the film. These include:
- Talent (which in film terminology refers to the actors)
- Hair & make-up for talent
- Costumes & Props (boat rental, lanterns, clothing)
- Crew members (gaffer, camera assistant, producer)
- Camera Package (RED ONE MX)
- Camera Accessories (heavy-duty tripod, batteries, and hard drives)
- Camera Lens Rentals (two anamorphic primes)
- Art Department (Props) Rentals and Expendables
- G&E (Lighting) Rentals and Expendables
- Transportation (one round-trip flight, plus luggage overages for camera and lights, plus gas costs for the shoot)
- Post production (at least 8 hours of editing time, visual effects & animation)
- Final Cut (4 hours including color timing and export for broadcast, e.g. MTV)
WHY I WANT YOU TO PLEDGE
I want to include you in the magic of making a film! It is an incredible process and I want you to join me for the thrill of this journey from beginning to end.
Also, this is an important story about initiation - the transition from adolescence to adulthood. When nurtured well, this time in a young person's life can be a powerful transformation and entry into an adult life of meaningful relationships, service and experiential knowledge. I want to bring attention to this particular rite of passage through my song and this short film.
Finally, this is my FIRST Kickstarter campaign and with your pledge, it will succeed! In addition to the gifts you'll receive for giving generously, you will be helping deliver the gift of my unique music and story to audiences all over the world!
Music and film-making is all about collaboration. In this project, I will be working closely with Aaron Proctor, an American director of photography and filmmaker who runs an independent production company in Los Angeles. Our first creative projects included making sandcastles on the beaches of San Francisco during childhood. More recently we have come together as adults pursuing our passion for film and music and have produced two unique music videos wowing audiences all over the world. You can view them at drymypetals.com and cablecarsong.com.
I love working with Aaron. When I sent him the lyrics of this song without even a sample recording of the music, he quickly replied and shared his initial ideas on what the video might look like. My jaw dropped while reading his vision – it was EXACTLY what I was trying to evoke in the song! He just got it, on the spot, like that. And I know he will be able to produce that vision on the screen for the audience. This is collaboration at its best.
In Aaron's own words: "Ever since the earliest childhood memories of knowing Lucia, I'm blown away by her tireless spirit and passionate drive. She pulls out all the stops and her creative fuel never runs dry. Shooting Potpourri was her beautiful, transpiring love song -- both in story and in production. Then, one 180-degree turn later, photographing Cable Car was her vivid, energizing dance track. Now, How the Moon Made Me splits the difference, takes it up another ten notches, and will undoubtedly be her most elegant, seamless, and stunning work yet. I know that collaborating with Lucia will produce both delightful and cinematic work."
Thank you for your pledge towards my project.
Please share this campaign with many of your friends, family members and colleagues.

Risks and challenges
I have worked with Aaron to complete two successful music video projects in the past and I am confident that we can afford to take the associated risks of shooting a film and are prepared to overcome any obstacles that may arise. For example, I have a back-up plan in place for a number of scenarios including poor weather on the shoot date, last minute complications with shoot locations, accidents on the set and camera malfunction. Please join me to take part in this incredible process.
