We reached $10,000! But with 48 Hours to go, I wonder... can we reach $12,000? Please continue to share the project and consider pledging any amount!
The Beauty of the Sequence: A Photo Essay of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series is a collaborative project bringing photography and yoga together. Together with Alexia Bauer, I have created a portfolio of photos which illustrate the Primary Series postures, and now I plan to bring this homage to the Ashtanga yoga practice to life by creating a photo book. Your support for this project will help us finish the layout process, and print a first run of the book.

After years of expressing my passion for dance through my photography, I have now found a new inspiration for my work: my yoga practice. My background as a dancer always guided my camera. Now that I have found myself becoming deeply involved in the yoga community in Chicago, it has been a natural gravitation for my camera to focus on the incredible yogis I have met, including my teacher and friend, Alexia Bauer. Alexia has become one of my most inspiring teachers, and her practice and teaching have an integrity and strength that is remarkable. As I began to think about doing this project, in an effort to further explore my own Ashtanga practice and also expand my photography portfolio, I knew that Alexia would be a great collaborator.

I was introduced to the Ashtanga style of yoga a few years ago, and since then I have found it to be a transformative and insightful tool for self-discovery. The more I practiced, the more I became fascinated by the unexpected challenges and the intelligence within this method of yoga. Ashtanga yoga is a rigorous series of specifically sequenced postures, and it is a style that defies common stereotypes of yoga. I discovered that sweat, strength, and stamina are all a part of the Ashtanga practice, just as much as developing a flexible and supple body. The postures of the Primary Series of Ashtanga are carefully and meticulously sequenced to open, strengthen, and detoxify the body - while ultimately providing a lesson of patience and diligence. By photographing each asana of the series, clearly and exquisitely demonstrated by Alexia, I hope to illustrate the intelligence of the sequence and the connections between many of the postures, while revealing the beauty of the Ashtanga yoga practice.
Alexia and I have spent many hours together, photographing each and every posture of the Primary Series to create this collection of photographs. The design and layout for the book are coming together, and will feature over 60 full color photographs. The book will also include a foreword by Alexia's teacher Kino MacGregor, a luminous figure in the Ashtanga yoga world.
Your support will help us complete the project and print an initial run of the book. Thank you for your time and consideration!
