About this project
My Kickstarter campaign has been an absolute delight. The humbling generosity and support of my backers has unlocked three stretch goals!
- Stretch Goal #3: My backers at the $25 level and above unlocked a FREE E-BOOK copy of one of my novels from the list below.
- Stretch Goal 2: My backers unlocked an exclusive sneak peek at a book that hasn't yet been published.
- Stretch Goal 1: My backers unlocked a digital copy of my cookbook with every pledge at the $25 level and higher.
Hello! My name is Jane Green. I’m a wife, mother, friend, amateur decorator, slightly-trained chef, and New York Times bestselling novelist.
Readers of my novels know how much I love painting pictures with words and how much my characters tend to love food…eating it, preparing it, and sharing it.
Food, and the feeding of people I love, is a passion of mine. I’ve shared recipes on social media, in my books, and in my newsletters throughout the years, and have fed most of the people who have dared set foot in my kitchen. Cooking has always been a huge source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for me. I love cookbooks and have spent countless hours reading them, thinking about them, and obviously cooking from their pages. Deep down I always fantasized about writing my own.
And now, I am finally biting the proverbial bullet. This Kickstarter campaign is to help me produce my very own, and first ever, cookbook called Good Taste. It’s nearly done and will be gorgeous––I could not be more proud of what I have created so far. My intention is to publish a limited edition, single print run, exclusively for backers of this campaign.
I’m doing this on Kickstarter because I want to share this process with as many people as possible. It’s a dream come true to finally take this step, and in the same spirit of wanting to share my kitchen table with family, friends, and neighbors, I want to share this process with all of you.
In creating this book, I wanted to tell a story with words, images and textures, sharing something authentic, beautiful, and homegrown. What I love about this process is that I’m able to keep my fingertips on every inch of the book's production–from the recipes and stories, to the sketch I drew for the logo, to styling and cooking the food, to picking the cover and the fonts—and I can share this creative adventure with others, including them directly in this process as never before. Good Taste is a very personal work, much more so than anything else I have done, and I wanted to share it with readers directly.
Why am I using Kickstarter?
In creating this book, I wanted to tell a story with words, images and textures, sharing something authentic, beautiful, and homegrown.
My novels are brought to you by my wonderful publishers. They invest a tremendous amount of time and expense––the editing, the art direction, the covers, the marketing, the printing, etc etc––in publishing my words and creating my books. When you buy one of my novels, you're paying for everyone's hard work.
I am self-publishing my cookbook. Publishing a hardcover, four-color cookbook is an expensive undertaking, and so far, I have covered all of the costs myself. Every penny raised goes to cover the many costs associated with bringing this book to my readers! Think of this campaign as pre-ordering a book, just as you would in a bookstore or on Amazon. But in a fun and exciting new way.
Because I am doing this outside of traditional publishing, and because I want to produce something that is as great to hold and touch as it is to actually use, your support will make all the difference. That is why I am offering this book exclusively for backers starting at $25.
As a limited edition collector’s edition, the book will be a beautifully designed and produced, linen-bound hardcover full of gorgeous never-before-seen photographs throughout. It is filled with stories that reflect my experiences cooking: for friends at university, for my large blended family, for an ailing friend, and once upon a time for a notoriously interview-shy celebrity as the only way to get him to speak.
As a bonus, when you back the campaign, you will also receive a signed copy of my next novel, Summer Secrets (because who doesn’t love to read while they eat?), which comes out at the end of this month.
A quick peek into the cookbook!
Good Taste is filled with recipes I have lovingly collected, in some cases adapted, and in a few, created, over the years. The food I gravitate towards is delicious, and easy. I don’t like recipes with lists and lists of ingredients. The ones in this cookbook are uncomplicated, and do not require sautéing for hours or staying enslaved to the stove. There are plenty of appetizers, entrees and desserts, or as this storyteller likes to think of them: beginnings, middles and endings.
Where Good Taste came from.
There are few things I adore more than gathering people around my table and feeding them. I have cooked as far back as I can remember. As a child, I would perch on a kitchen stool while my mother baked, taking her pastry scraps, and rolling them out for jam tarts.
When I was at university, I would come home during vacations, often to an empty house, and invite all my friends over for elaborate meals. I have always been a bold and fearless cook, always eager to try something new, and swift to move on when things didn’t work out––oh the joys of living on the edge! Wanting to better understand food and the science of cooking, I attended the French Culinary Institute in New York a few years ago, completing their Part I Culinary Arts program. It was a fantastic experience that challenged me in every way imaginable. It helped me further my passion for what I began to understand was my expressing love through food.
Cooking would seem to be completely different from writing, but in many ways it feels similar––when friends come over I’m creating a warm, beautiful environment, making them feel nurtured and loved with the food I cook, in much the same way I’m evoking those feelings and creating those lifestyles in the pages of my novels.
Both my parents are wonderful cooks, as was my lovely late grandmother, and food has always been a huge part of my life. Years ago, before I started writing novels, I was a journalist, and for years I specialized in stories from my life. Even my novels usually use a spark of a real-life event that inspires a fictitious story.
In 2014, I assembled some of my favorite recipes and thoughts about cooking in an ebook that I called Happy Food. I shared it with people as part of the release of my novel Saving Grace and got such a great response that it inspired me to do a real cookbook. Happy Food, in essence, grew into Good Taste.
Good Taste is for me, about sharing. It is filled with family recipes (including my mother’s and grandmother’s), with the food I cook for my own family and friends, with recipes lovingly created, collected and adapted by me, and with stories about what particular dishes mean to me or how they feature in my life. There are also some cooking mishaps and lessons learned along the way.
The funding goal.My Kickstarter goal covered the production costs of creating the book, including the fees for the wonderful and talented team of creative and industrious people who came together to help me make this dream a reality: art director, photographer, chefs for recipe testing (because as much I love cooking, testing an entire cookbook is not something I could do all by myself!), dishwasher, food and flowers, props for shooting, equipment rental, and platform fees, as well as the cost of running this campaign itself.
I looked for the best platform through which to sell Good Taste, and chose Kickstarter. With Kickstarter, I can offer the book as a pre-order to my readers directly, those who have been along for the journey from the beginning.
Anything I continue to raise will allow me to print more limited edition copies of Good Taste and get this gorgeous book into the hands of more readers.
Your support means everything.
Earlier this year, my husband and I unexpectedly sold the beautiful house we had built in our coastal Connecticut town, and purchased a creaky cottage on a tidal creek. We moved in to this charming old house, which instantly felt familiar, far more like the older homes I’d grown up in as a girl in England. The ceilings are low, the rooms snug. I feel as if the house is wrapping me in a hug each time I walk in, and I realize how much I had pushed aside my need to be cozy and comfortable and warm; I realized I had come home.
The timing of feeling back at home in a lovely old house, renovating as I go, was the perfect instigator for Good Taste––I wanted to share my delight of creating a home, and the things that go into turning a house into a home. Because this cookbook isn’t just about food. It’s about living a good life with ease, creating an environment that makes our family and friends want to kick off their shoes and curl up on a squishy sofa as soon as they walk through the door. This is a book about building a nest, and filling it with the people you love.
By sharing my passions through this book, I hope that people from around the world will feel even better about where and how they live. I hope that my Kickstarter backers will welcome the opportunity to gather friends and family in their homes, and that Good Taste will help them feel comforted, nurtured, and loved.
I hope you all love this cookbook as much as I loved putting it together!
I’m deeply grateful for your support.
Risks and challenges
For the past year, I have been working with a talented photographer, chefs, and art director on this cookbook. Most of the work––page layouts, recipes, photos, and text––is already done. When hand off our final PDF files, we have just a 14-week turnaround to print! I am working with Blurb in San Francisco to have these books printed and distributed by October. There's a possibility of delays with printing and distribution of the cookbook but Summer Secrets will likely be in the hands of my backers before October.
All backers pledging for experiential rewards expressly agree and understand that they are subject to a background check. We reserve the right to cancel the event and reimburse your pledge without recourse, pending results of this security measure.
