The Starlight Bowl was constructed in Balboa park in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exposition. It was a longstanding hub for San Diego music and performance, hosting some of the biggest names in music!
Sadly, the San Diego Civic Light Opera (who ran a series of summer musicals at Starlight) ceased operations in 2011 and Starlight shut its doors. It has sat dormant ever since, falling deeper and deeper into disrepair.
Save Starlight has already done several clean ups and repairs around the bowl. In being granted a special use permit, the real work can now begin to make the space operational and usable by all members of the community.
Funds from this kickstarter will go towards the upstairs phase of our site restoration for the historic Starlight Bowl. This phase of our project has three primary goals:
- Installing a stage area with lights and sound in the upstairs area
- Rebuilding and reopening the concession booth to feature high quality, sustainable coffee and concessions
- Creating a media center with wifi, live feed cameras, and video editing bays for in park student broadcasts
$25,000 is the minimum for us to have upstairs performances as early as this summer. Of course, the more we raise, the more we can rebuild the space to make Starlight the hub for San Diego family entertainment! This is going to be a multi phase process that will eventually result in the full restoration of this 4,300 seat amphitheater.
By being among the first pledges for Starlight, we've got some exclusive swag and backstage access!
We are so close to having Starlight transformed into an exciting hot spot for San Diego, and we want to make sure that those of you who help us get there are among the first to enjoy this wonderful space under the stars!
As a 501c3 non-profit, Save Starlight's intent for this space is to be available for community events and performance of all shapes and size. We want YOU!!! Whether you're in our audience or on our stage, whatever we can dream is what we can do!
Once our space is built and developed, performers and organizations from throughout San Diego county will have access to our venue with no up front cost. Our organization will only collect a small percentage of ticket sales to cover operating costs with the rest going back to the performers or event organizers. This will enable local schools and organizations who may not have an up front budget a cost effective means to do events and performances. We believe the Starlight Bowl should be for everyone, and it is our goal to make that the case!
Your support of Save Starlight helps make this dream come true for not only us, but for every San Diegan that is going to get to enjoy this beautiful Balboa Park treasure under the stars. We can't wait to see you there!
Save Starlight was founded by Steve Stopper, a former 'soundman' from the Starlight bowl. You may have seen us out and about in Balboa Park for various events, one of our cleanups, or perhaps you saw us in the news for the signed guitar that Tom Petty donated for auction just before his untimely passing.

Risks and challenges
We know that the undertaking of restoring this space is going to take more funds and resources than this kickstarter will cover. However, Save Starlight already has an extensive volunteer database, including a grantwriting team and a number of supporters within several nearby school districts for programming and extended efforts. Every day we are expanding the vision of what we can accomplish, but this kickstarter guarantees that we will have performances happening on the top level of Starlight by Summer of 2018! (This year!)
If you are interested in donating your time or talents, please contact us at email@example.com! We'd love to have you be a part of our efforts!
We are also aware that the primary complaint of guests during the run of the Civic Light Opera (the previous incarnation of the Starlight Bowl as a musical theatre venue) was regarding the overhead noise of the planes in Balboa Park. The Civic Light Opera was known for pausing to accommodate these in the past, but we also address the planes in several ways, including forms of noise compensation and white noise utilization. Our founder Steve Stopper has researched a number of alternatives for inside the bowl, even so far as in-seat headphone installation.
We are also grateful that a number of airlines such as Southwest have begun investing in technology that mitigates the noises from their engines- their new fleet of 737s boast an engine 40% quieter than previous generations.
But perhaps most importantly, by creating a diverse program of events, we can adjust the content and timelines to be least affected by the noise of these planes, as we have seen done by other venues with a similar issue. We are confident that the legacy of this venue supersedes these planes and are dedicated to ensuring that this magical space continues to host memorable experiences for generations to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
