WWII: The Card Game is a highly strategic two-player tabletop card game. Players choose to play as either the Axis or the Allies in an attempt to best their opponent and become the winner of World War II. Each side has its own unique themes and strategies, and cards come with an allegiance-specific card back so players know which cards belong to each side. Prior to the game, players build their own 60-card deck utilizing the card pool for their chosen side, selecting one of the three primary nationalities they wish to feature. For the Axis side, players will have the choice of Germany or Italy in the Premiere Set (offered in this Kickstarter), with Japan to come in the first expansion. For the Allies, players will have the choice of Great Britain or the United States of America in the Premiere Set, with the U.S.S.R. to come in the first expansion. While players will choose one primary nationality, there are no limitations to using other nations in your deck, meaning you may mix your German and Italian units to build the best deck you can.

When you back this project for a copy of the game, you will know exactly which cards you are receiving. We believe the fixed distribution model for card games gives the player the most bang for their buck, and helps keep the expense down for players that want to be competitive but don't want to buy pack after pack to get just the right cards. All decks have a limit of 3 copies of any one card in the deck, so it is impossible for a player to "buy their way to victory" by having the most expensive deck.

WWII: The Card Game is a turn-based game with players seeking to deplete their opponent's 60-card deck by controlling territory and winning battles. Players have a wide variety of means to deplete their opponent of cards, and must determine which strategy they believe is the most efficient and effective for reaching their goal.

World War II was fought in two key arenas - land and sea - and WWII: The Card Game is no different. Players use arena-specific units to fight on land and at sea, and may also use powerful air units that can contribute in both arenas. The player must decide the best way to balance their deck to deal with all forms of combat: land, sea and air.

Example Vehicle Unit (click to view)

Players use units to compete over locations that players deploy on the table throughout the game. Units belong to one of the three main arenas (land, sea and air) and come in one of four types (Regiment, Vehicle, Sea, and Air). Each of these types has a variety of subtypes such as Army, Tank, Battleship and Fighter. Each unit typically represents a group of troops, vehicles, or fighters, while sea units represent one ship and all of its crew. This illustrates the enormity of the conflict as players are controlling whole armies, not just single soldiers.

WWII: The Card Game Special Edition will use alternate templates for the game cards featuring full national flag backgrounds for all cards belonging to specific nationalities.

The Special Edition comes with the same 400 cards as the Standard Edition, but does not include a game box, tokens, or rules documents (rules and tokens are available for download on our website). This version of the game will not be mass produced, but will instead be printed print-on-demand. This means we will not be printing more than we sell, so this edition may never be available again after this Kickstarter ends. Because this edition is print-on-demand, we will be able to order the game as soon as we send our game files to the printer, expected to be in January or February. Backers that order the Special Edition can expect to receive their Special Edition version of the game in March 2014, at least 2 months before the Standard Edition ships.

Board game production is an expensive process. It costs thousands of dollars to print and ship a game. We want the game to be the best quality possible, and we want to make sure you as the consumer receive everything you need to play the game and get the best play experience straight out of the box. As an independent game publisher, we don't have the capital to fund a game project on our own. By using Kickstarter, we have the chance to raise the money we need to print the game and ship it to you. We have seen the wonderful successes of the Kickstarter board gaming community, and we believe that some of the best new games are coming out of this website. We understand the risks of supporting a game project on Kickstarter, and we are confident that we can and will deliver an excellent, high quality card game in a reasonable amount of time.

Please Note: International shipping is now available! See the SWIFT LEVEL and BOMBARD LEVEL to the right.

Money-Back Guarantee: If you decide you don't like WWII: The Card Game within the first month of receiving it, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked.

We Value Your Feedback: Once you pledge, you will be able to offer up any comments or suggestions about the project and we will work diligently to address any concerns you may have.

Kickstarter Backers Come First: Our backers have a special place in our hearts. As a backer, you will get your game before it becomes available for sale elsewhere, and you will be the first we ship to before any future pre-orders on our website. We will always be completely honest and transparent with you during this process.

Because We Need You: The game is virtually ready to print, but we can't afford to manufacture and ship the game without your support. We've invested a lot of our own time, energy and money into making this game the best it can be, and we're very excited to bring the game to your table, but we need your help to do that.

Fanfare Games is an independent card and board game company founded by brothers Chris and Tony Fanchi in 2011 with the goal of producing high-quality tabletop games for all gamers to enjoy. Our first release, Basketball G.M., is available now print-on-demand through The Game Crafter. WWII: The Card Game is the fruition of our dream to bring a strategic constructed-deck game to the gaming community. As long-time constructed-deck gamers, we have experience with card games like Star Wars CCG, Magic: The Gathering, Star Trek CCG, Deadlands: Doomtown, Android: Netrunner, Star Wars TCG, VS System, Young Jedi TCG, Babylon 5 CCG and more. With almost two decades of experience each, we believe that we know what it takes to produce a balanced, engaging and strategic card game.

Fanfare Games is also proud to be teamed up with a legend of Star Wars CCG, 2009 World Champion and long-time top-rated player Brian Hunter. Brian has been closely involved with the development of the game from very early on and his contributions have been critical to making the game what it is today.

Risks and challenges

Designing, developing and printing a game is a costly and time-consuming process with a lot of hurdles that must be accounted for. These include developmental delays, technical problems, print or production problems, shipping delays, and other unforeseen delays. We understand the risks and challenges that come with producing a high quality, well-developed and well-balanced game. We will strive to do everything we can to ensure the successful and timely delivery of this game to all backers.

While this is the first game project that we will be publishing on our own, we have invested a great deal of time and effort into researching the process and evaluating all of the obstacles we must overcome. We have another game, Basketball G.M., that completed this arduous development process and is currently available through print-on-demand at The Game Crafter (https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/basketball-g.m.-complete). It is our expectation that WWII: The Card Game will be a far better game because of our past experiences playing and developing card games.

As you might expect, game development continues up until the final day prior to printing, with playtesting being a continual process. Note that cards and rules posted on this project page are subject to change up until the day the game goes to the printer, which we expect to happen by early February.

We are very excited to see WWII: The Card Game become a reality and we believe the gaming world will find it to be a fun, challenging, and well-designed game that can be enjoyed for years to come.
