We created the HYREL 3D Printer to be a pre-assembled 3D printer anyone can take and use right-away. The only thing you have to do is pull it out of the box, install our 3D printer software, plug it into the wall & your computer, and start printing!

Who are we?
We are a small group of engineers, designers, and business people who have been making automated machines for the semiconductor industry for the past 35 years. Our machines are in use today in hundreds of semiconductor fabs worldwide. Our expertise covers all major areas of machine design and fabrication; both mechanical and electrical CAD design, software and firmware, captive machine shop, and electronics assembly.
We are located in Atlanta, GA and have our own shop, complete with a machine shop, electronics soldering stations, programmers' and CAD modelers' bull-pen, and assembly & test area. You can see some of our facilities in the first opening seconds of the video and also here:
With our experience in motion controls and material science, we can expand the materials used in our 3D printing systems to include emulsified materials, epoxies, bonding agents, and other proprietary materials.
What's a 3D printer?
Most common 3D printers make an item by extruding a thin line of plastic onto a printable surface. Building layer upon layer of plastic on itself until the item is completely built.
It's easiest to think of squeezing a line of toothpaste onto a toothbrush, then continuing to squeeze toothpaste out on top of the toothpaste already on the toothbrush. This layering of material is what 3D printers is all about.
Our Story / Why we are making a 3D printer:
When we first approached the 3D printer market, we were buyers. We were looking for a machine which would quickly and reliably build prototypes. So we researched the high end and low end 3D printers. As we educated ourselves about the industry's products, we found there were 3D printers available at the $1,500 to $500,000 price points.
Because we could not afford investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into a single 3D printer system we wanted, we bought one of the higher-priced 3D printer kits to use for prototyping. We tried to put it together and tested it. Unfortunately, the results were as follows:
- Excessive Time to Build
- Leveling and Squaring the machine was Extremely Difficult
- Vibration from motion cause the fasteners (screws, etc). to loosen and required constant maintenance
We were not looking for a calibration and maintenance nightmare (some assembly and TLC greatly required).
This left us back at square one. We still needed a reliable 3D printer. We could not afford to tie-up more time and money into other 3D printers if they had the possibility of not working right out-of-the-box.
We needed a professional, industrial grade 3D printer.
This is why we created the HYREL 3D Printer.
What can you do with the HYREL 3D Printer?
You can make custom 3D designs, custom plastic parts, working prototypes, custom toys, hooks for clothes, whistles, etc...
Just about anything you can design in a CAD package (even free CAD software like Google Sketch-up!) can be printed. Let the HYREL 3D Printer set your imagination free. If you can dream it and sketch it, you can make it! The HYREL 3D Printer is your own personal 3D factory!

Un-locked for Open Source
Open Source is awesome. We love what the open source community has done to enable this technology for everyone to use, which is why we are keeping the HYREL 3D Printer unlocked. This means that if you want to use any of the open source software platforms with the HYREL 3D Printer, you're free to do so. However, because there are far too many open source packages out there to support, we will not be able to offer support for these platforms if you choose to go down that path.
NOTE: You will also have the option to overwrite the firmware on our electronics. If you decide to do this, it will void the warranty and you operate the printer at your own risk.

- Pre-assembled (NOT A KIT!)
One of the greatest assumptions with 3D printer kits is the assumption that the customer knows how to assemble their 3D printer kit properly. Even with our expertise assembling machines, it still took us over five days to put together the 3D printer kit we purchased.
By pre-assembling the HYREL 3D Printer, it saves you time, money, and hassle.
- Fully tested to ensure quality, reliability, and accuracy
How can you ensure the 3D printer you receive can print reliably and accurately? A single fastener, not properly tightened, can cause a 3D printer to misprint parts, cause instability in the printer, or worse, cause other fasteners to shake loose.
Before we ship any product, we always run a rigorous and thorough quality control check on it. So, if one of our HYREL 3D Printers does not pass our standards, it does not ship.
- Rugged metal chassis made of steel and aluminum
Another common complaint we have seen with multiple 3D printers is the unstable and flimsy material which has been used to hold the machine together. It has been our experience with acrylic, plywood, and plastic parts that they either crack, warp, sway, bend, or distort in some fashion in shipping, assembly, or while printing. This results in poor registration, accuracy, repeatability, and overall reliability of the printer.
The metal frame of the HYREL 3D printer is more than strong enough to withstand the amount of movement of the extruder head(s) and base platform. This provides excellent registration, accuracy, repeatability, and overall reliability.
- Precise motion control
Extensive use of fabrication technology and CAD modeling was utilized to provide a rigid, durable, and cost effective platform. Our high quality components are usually only found in systems costing over $10,000.
Precision linear rails are used in the HYREL 3D Printer for all three axes. We also include a precision ball screw in the Z axis to provide years of high precision trouble-free performance.
- Single or Dual "Hot-Head" extruders
The HYREL 3D Printer features a hot-swap interchangeable mounting system. Both extruder heads can be removed and replaced in less than a minute, even if the tips are operating at the extruding temperature. The interchangeable mounting system was inspired by other industrial mounting systems used in heavy-duty machine tools. This interchangeable design enables mixed build material technologies not available in other systems today.
By having precise positioning with an interchangeable mounting system, it removes potential creep of the extruder heads, thereby solidifying its registration and reliability.
In addition, we included a quick filament change system, which allows any user to easily replace and replenish a filament (ABS / PLA). You'll never have to fight against a motor, gear, or screw ever again.
Should I get a Single or Dual "Hot-Head"?
While a single extruder head can create most items, the advantage of having a dual extruder system is two-fold. First, it allows the final part to be printed in two different colors (ABS / ABS, ABS / PLA, or PLA / PLA). Second, dual extruder systems which use an ABS / PLA combination allow the user to create shapes which cannot be made with a single extruder. In this case, the PLA is used as a supporting "filler" base material where the ABS prints on top of it. At the end of a print, the PLA can be dissolved in an Ultrasonic Wash Tank, leaving the ABS part intact.
What kind of filament does the HYREL 3D "Hot-Head" extruder use?
All HYREL 3D Printers use the standard 3mm filament (ABS / PLA).

There are five things which affect resolution:
1.) Structure of the 3D printer (rugged or flimsy)

4.) Layer thickness
5.) Nozzle tip
Let's face it, the lower the resolution of a part, the courser the part becomes, the lower the tolerances are.
- Build Area of Your Choice (see Additional / Optional features below)
You can choose to have a build area of 150x150x150mm (x,y,z) or 200x200x200mm. Please take note that a larger part takes a proportionally longer time to print.
If you get the 150x150x200mm build area and realize later you really wanted or needed the 200x200x200mm, we will be offering an expansion pack on our website, www.HYREL3D.com, after the Kickstarter campaign is over. For more details, see the Additional / Optional Features section below).
- Heated Bed Platform
All HYREL 3D Printers have a heated bed platform. We tested the Prusa Mendel heat bed and it was good! However, we have a few issues using it, due to the flatness and distortion which can occur with it.
Because we have been making heated bed platforms for other projects for the past 20 years, we are building our own version(s) for the HYREL 3D printers. more information about it will show up in the "Updates" tab at the top of this Kickstarter page and on our website, www.hyrel3d.com.
- Our Software
We have been coding our own firmware and software for many years. No need to download, research, and test multiple firmware and software packages to make the HYREL 3D Printer to work. The firmware will ship pre-flashed. The software will be available on a USB flash drive and on our website, www.HYREL3D.com.
All you need to do is download and install.

1.) Embedded Camera System for Auto-calibration
This enhancement will be installed into all Big Engine, System, and Super System pledge levels at no extra charge. This enhancement has two main features in one. The first works by extruding out a small amount of material on the build area at different x & y positions in a pre-determined test pattern, takes pictures of the test patterns, and then gives you an evaluation of line thickness versus feed rate. All you need to do is select the line thickness you want and press start. The second feature gives you a pictorial history with a picture of each layer and stores it on the hard drive. With this feature, you can do two things. In the unlikely event the build encounters a problem, you can easily identify the exact slice where the problem occurred. This is very valuable when refining complicated shapes and mixed material builds. The second, which is something we are working on right now, allows you to do a quick check of the build via your PC or smart phone. You'll be able to see the last picture the printer has taken, so you can free yourself from having to stand-by the printer at all times.
Unfortunately, we cannot support the embedded camera at the Engine level because this enhancement requires an embedded PC. HOWEVER, we have made all HYREL 3D printers modular, which allows the Engine pledges to be able to upgrade their printer at a later date. 2.) All Printers will come with a TRUE build area.
What is a TRUE build area? Some of you who have purchased other 3D printers with "Dual extruders" have found this marketing caveat. The build area "stated on the box" typically reflects the build area of a Single extruder head system. This is NOT the TRUE build area of a Dual extruder system. For instance, one of the 3D printers we worked with said it had a build area of 8x8x8 inches (200x200x200mm). When you added the second extruder, it removed 2 inches (~51 mm) in the X axis, making the TRUE build area 6x8x8 inches (149x200x200mm) -- this was NOT stated anywhere and was taken as a "well, what did you expect?" attitude from that corporation.
We remembered this issue and have added in for all Engines, Big Engines, Systems, and Super Systems a TRUE Build Area. We were planning on having this enhancement come standard on all printers from the start; and truth be told, we weren't going to tout this enhancement until this Kickstarter campaign was over.
Also, the Heated Build Platform remains 8x8 inches (200x200mm).

Short Answer: An Ultrasonic Wash Tank dissolves the soluble support material, such as PLA.
Detailed Answer: When printing two different materials, ABS and PLA, in the dual head option, the PLA is typically used as a support material for the ABS. While both materials extruded are molten, they require a surface / layer to print on. Think of squeezing a tube of toothpaste plus gravity. If you do not have a support material like a toothbrush, the toothpaste will hit the floor. Finally, an ultrasonic wash tank is like a dishwasher. In this case, the ultrasonic wash tank dissolves the PLA, leaving the ABS intact. This process is much faster than letting the part soak and waiting for the PLA to dissolve, plus an ultrasonic wash tank gets into the smaller cracks much better.
Linux? Yes, in fact we have been working with a few open software packages, like PronterFace to allow Linux users to use the HYREL 3D printers.

Yes! Every version of the HYREL 3D Printers will have a hot bed / heated bed platform.
We are the process of making a video detailing this information. Please stay tuned!
Will the software you show in the teaser be running on the PC embedded in the system or on an external PC? Will I require a monitor/keyboard/mouse to be connected to the System?
The software shown in the teaser is running on a PC. It will run on the embedded print server on the printer. The System was designed to let you run via VNC from any computer in your network. As well as have the option of attaching a monitor, keyboard, and mouse directly to the printer as well.
This gives us the power to make special measurements and video features, and allows ALL platforms to interface with our printer, Mac, PC, Linux, Android, via the VNC.
We have a Linux-based print server already functioning and we are developing it to be at a price point which fits.
It is our intention to have a print server embedded in the high-level HYREL 3D System. There will be a full feature list released in the next two weeks about that print server.
The HYREL 3D Engine has a micro-controller which has a USB port on it. You can supply the part file to be printed via USB memory stick and the Engine is capable of printing without needing a computer.
We will supply and ship the software which will allow you to run the part from your PC using a USB cable. (The software will also be available for download on our website at www.hyrel3d.com.)
The HYREL 3D System we sell comes with a full print server for independent printing. There will be a full feature list released in the next two weeks about that print server.
1. By containing all of the moving parts within the enclosure, it provides a protective shell. This safety factor is paramount for an home, office, commercial, and industrial environment.
2. Even though we are using micro-stepping motors and drivers to reduce the amount of sound the motors produce (which is an issue all machines have), the enclosure will dampen this further (or possibly remove the sound altogether).
3. Because some people have sensitivities to the smell of the emissions (the ABS and PLA do have a slight smell when molten), we have built into the enclosure a venting port so these emissions can be directed away from the machine to wherever the user feels is necessary.
4. Finally, even though we cannot claim that this is a heated build chamber (due to Stratasys's US patent, #6,722,872), our enclosure does contain the emanating heat rather well. This provides better builds overall for larger parts. However, a heated build platform provides a suitable work-around for all HYREL 3D printers.
We are implementing this as we speak. When the printer detects motion loss or if the material doesn't extrude right or doesn't position right, it freezes the build. This allows an operator to come and review and start from that point. This ability allows a chance to recover a part without losing all the time invested.
Yes! Safety always comes first in everything we build.
If someone were to design a drive system which, no matter what gets in the way, it keeps going, it's going to hurt someone or break something.
This is why we are building a drive system which has more than enough power to position itself at a relatively good speed. However, it's not so powerful that it's going to be a safety hazard and/or threaten the machine's longevity or rigidity.
In our Semiconductor company, we developed a vision system to read bar-code and OCR on silicon wafers.
Our goal of calibration is measure the FINAL result, I.E. "what quality and width are the lines that are being extruded?" This is done optically with our embedded PC, and it accurately represents how the printer will perform on the next build run.
Our calibration techology will extrude test lines outside of the part build area and use the camera to verify the feed rate and consistency is in spec, or it will suggest adjustments to improve the results.
Actually, we can make "Hot-Head" extruders which use 1.75mm. At this time, the "Hot-Head" extruders only work with one type of filament. So if you want to have the ability to use the 1.75mm and 3mm, you will need to have two extruder heads, one for each size of filament.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Our "Hot-Head" extruders have been tested with 3mm and have had consistent results. We have yet to test 1.75mm. If it meets our standards, we will offer them.
If the 1.75mm filament works and if you have already pledged and would like to have the 1.75mm filament instead of the 3mm, please email us before the Kickstarter campaign is over and we will gladly swap them at no extra charge.

All core electronics are covered for 1 year.
Heaters, hot ends and hot beds are covered for 90 days, but if it is an obvious manufacturing error, we will not charge for repair. Our policy for all parts (not just electronics) is depot repair, you only pay shipping.
The mechanical parts of the printer are very solid, so we do not expect any real problems there, unless you operate your printer in a very dirty area, such as a saw room or sand blasting area. (NOTE: operating in such an environment would void the warranty.)
Mechanical parts are also under warranty for 90 days. As an aside, we have been using these bearings for over 20 on hundreds of machines, and NEVER had to replace one in this type of application.
One of the strengths of this design is its modularity. Each axis is its own module. We can easily identify problems and offer a modular solution which usually would take only a few minutes of a moderately skilled person to replace.
On the HYREL System, we have the ability to diagnose the printer via VNC.
On the HYREL Engines, we are working on software which will allow us to link up with the printer controller via your PC over VNC.
Either way, this will help us quickly diagnose the problems and decide what action is best to take.
