What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

These photos and videos provide a detailed look at this project’s development.

The Tablestool can bring happiness to any outdoor eating or music event because of its engaging, functional and dynamic design. The blanket used to carry it gives you a plush surface to sit on and can be used with or without the table. The Tablestool is easy to carry, assemble and disassemble. If used indoors, it adds quiet character to any room.

Since making the first Tablestool prototype in Copenhagen in 2002, I have worked with multiple vendors to create additional prototypes. This year I have partnered with vendors who can make the pieces at a cost that will allow me to to bring it to market at a price I'm comfortable with.

Final prototype

With the vendor partnerships in place, we are poised and ready to place the orders. The final prototype tables will be made with high-grade Birch plywood, and manufactured using CNC technology. This helps get the cost to a place where it can be sold at an accessible price.

The blanket top layer will be made with anti-pill medium weight fleece to create a plush layer for sitting and a bottom layer of Solution Dyed Acrylic which is water resistant and easy to clean. The straps will be made of durable nylon webbing.

Risks and challenges

Even after completing 3 rounds of prototypes, there are always unknowns when starting a new prototype with a vendor for the first time.

This final prototype is using a new manufacturing technique for this piece, so there is a slight learning curve there but I know this piece very well, and the vendor knows the technique very well, so our chances of success are pretty high! That said, if we run into challenges, I'm confident we can overcome them through dialogue and trial. I will be sure to take you on the journey with me.
