THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!
The Rovers story isn’t about prophecies, destinies, ancient cursed items with the power to destroy the world, or even implacable northern barbarians forging kingdoms in the softer southern lands. Rovers is a story about people living in the towns and villages that typically get destroyed, conquered, or forgotten in those other stories.
The goal of this campaign is to fund the printing of a trade collecting the first three issues of our story, which brings our characters together for the first time. Each chapter of Rovers is written as a single-issue, self-contained adventure with over-arching character themes. It has adventure, humor, action, and just a little splash of romance. Think Firefly, in the time of the Fellowship.
And here's our standard cover, minus trade dress, but it's obvious Joel does some FANTASTIC work.
Two mercenaries, a magician, and a drunk cleric all find themselves in a bar…and that’s pretty much how Chapter One: The Goblins of Grere, starts.
Bellik and Essar are in town looking for a runaway goblin and, to Bellik’s misfortune, they meet Gaberlin and Father Burr during their search.
Mistakes are made, and what should have been a fairly straightforward snatch and grab turns into something more for all parties involved.
Chapter Two: Work-A-Day Magician, opens with the group stranded in another small town, Brille. It’s here they must decide how long they’re going to stick together, and where they are going.
Complicating matters is the appearance of two bounty hunters with plans of their own.
Having left Brille (and hopefully their troubles) behind, our cast finds only more danger ahead as they travel along the Troll Road, Chapter Three of Happenstance. It’s time to fight or die.
If you're not quite sure yet and would like to see more, or even read all three chapters right now, you can! Chapters One, Two, and Three, in their entirety, are hosted on Line Webtoon!
While the story is complete on Webtoon, it is available only in a scroll version. The print version will look significantly different and provide more art and detail. Rovers was designed and drawn as a book, and I am thrilled to be able to offer the story in the format it for which it was intended through Kickstarter.
Here is a sneak-peak at the Kickstarter exclusive cover, available beginning at the $30 VARIANT pledge level. Or become a true COLLECTOR and get both covers!
Check back frequently to see how the cover work is progressing.
As a one-man show (for the most part), I don’t have a lot of overhead, and accordingly, the funding goal can be set at a pretty reasonable level. $3000 almost perfectly covers the printing, shipping, and Kickstarter fees. That celebratory pizza I mentioned in the video doesn’t need to be fancy, I’m a frozen foods kind of guy.
The covers shown here are placeholders. When both covers are complete, I'll update this section.
Just a PDF person? Only after the story in it's original format? Then this is for you. Your name will also be added to a thank you section at the back of the book, which will only be included in the PDF copy.
Digital fan but after a little more to read? The Expanded PDF will include more pages of pencils, sketches, early drafts, design, a window into all the thousands of little decisions made behind the scenes. At this tier you'll also be receiving digital files of all unlocked stretch goals.
Yeah a PDF is fine, but are you looking to hold something in your hands? Feel the weight, hear the subtle rasp of pages turning? This tier gives you all of that, as well as a map of our adventurer's travelers up 'til now, AND all the unlocked stretch goals, digital and physical (where applicable.)
Regular covers not your thing? Looking for an exclusive that will only be sold in limited quantities in limited places? The Variant tier is where you want to be. Everything that comes with the ROVERS tier, but a Kickstarter Exclusive cover instead of the standard cover.
Can't decide between the regular and variant cover? I'm with you, that's why I wear two different socks everyday. If you're my kind of indecisive, or maybe just an avid collector, then this is the tier you need. Both covers, as well as everything included in the previous tier.
Wait, wait, wait, you've got both covers, but is that collector enough for you? Hadn't you better get the books (yes, bookS, you get a regular and variant here), signed? If this is where you land, then that's what you'll get. Signed by Mick, and, if we can unlock the color stretch goal, signed by Joel as well!
You've got the books, you've got them signed, but they spend a lot of time in a box when you're not reading them. Now you need something more, to remember them by when they're safely tucked away. What you want, nay, what you need, is an 11x17 mini poster of the cover of your choice, standard or variant. Printed through PrintKeg, these posters are high quality, and will look great hanging in honor on your walls somewhere.
But you know how you and I can't decide on which socks we're going to wear? We also couldn't decide on which cover of the book to order, and now we can't decide on which cover print to get, so we better just get both, and here we are.
You've got all the goodies, but you're an original art person, aren't you? I can tell. So now you're looking for the memento that no one else will have, because here at the SKETCH tier, you'll be getting a signed, conventional style sketch, addressed just to you!
What more could you possibly want at this point? A commissioned portrait of your very own Original Character is what you could want. Maybe your RPG character, maybe someone that just kicks back and lives in your head, maybe your own comic creation, who knows? You know, it's your character! Pick this tier, gimme some background and details, and when your box of Rovers goodies arrives at your door, it will contain a 6x11 print of your OC.
Have you ever wanted to picked up by a tipsy gnome in a bar, own a tavern in a small village, or be a young goblin, full of vim and vigor, excited to be out and about on his first raid ever, only to be cut down in your prime? YOU CAN. There are only five of these available, so If you're leaning this direction, don't hesitate! You'll also receive a print of the page you appear on!
Thanks to our amazing supporters, we fully funded in under a week! As we make our way towards the ultimate stretch goal, COLOR, we'll pass a few mileposts along the way.
The first stop is a set of 6 RPG character sheets, one for each of the main characters in Rovers, and a blank sheet for yourself! The single sheet versions will be included beginning at the DIGITAL level. The physical print versions will be in portfolio form, complete with a character cover, all of the stats and plenty of room for spells and notes.
Check back here for updates as the creation of the character sheets continues!
As I mentioned in the video, I'm not a colorist, but I do know a colorist, a damn good one. Joel Bartlett has already put his unique touch on the pages you can see above and below, and, with your help, he won’t have to stop there.
The color stretch goal is set at $6000. This will shift the breakdown of pledged money more to the production end, as it would cover Joel's services, as well as the significant increase in printing costs that color would demand. This is the final stretch goal I have planned currently, and if we hit this goal, anything we raise over it will go towards paying Joel forward for Volume 2 of Rovers.
Coloring of course will push the delivery date back as Joel won't have had much of a head start on the book. An updated delivery date will be announced when we get closer to the goal.
Risks and challenges
The book is already complete (unless a stretch goal or two is met!), so the files for the physical book can be off to the printer as soon as the KS is over. PDFs of Happenstance will be sent out shortly thereafter, and I’ll have a complete list of recipients so that everyone should receive their book at the same time.
Thanks again for checking out the project, reading all the way down this far, and for your support! I am exceptionally proud of Rovers, and it’s cliché as all get out, but I really do hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it!
