AND 50% of the revenue from OntheBoards.tv goes directly to participating artists, with the rest supporting the site.
OntheBoards.tv has also become a major educational tool, and is offered as a catalog to thousands of students in 125 university libraries internationally. OntheBoards.tv features nearly 60 films of your favorite artists, including Kidd Pivot/Crystal Pite, Young Jean Lee, The Rude Mechs, Ralph Lemon, zoe | juniper, Kyle Abraham, Beth Gill, Faye Driscoll, and many, many more.
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
We have two current goals with OntheBoards.tv: to increase the number of films by artists of color on the site, and to update the website.
As an organization, On the Boards deeply values racial equity, and is committed to reflecting these values in all our work, including OntheBoards.tv. We have a goal of increasing the current ratio of films by artists of color from 31% to 50%.
Three of our next four films this season are by celebrated black artists from across the United States -- Bebe Miller, Kaneza Schaal, & Dani Tirrell. And to fully support all these new films, we need to make major upgrades and updates to our website software.

Up-and-coming theater artist Kaneza Schaal’s collaboration with Cornell Alston, JACK& is built from the lived experiences of those, including Alston, who reentered society after being incarcerated, and the effect of incarceration on their dreams.
The Masterclass Series -- slated to film Spring/Summer 2018, release in Fall 2018
Collaborating with local artists Dani Tirrell, Zoe Scofield (of zoe | juniper) and Reel Grrls Productions, we’re developing two “Masterclass” films to share the artistic processes and philosophies of these local artists.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
"For some Cinderellas a fairy godmother delivers a prince. For others? A high-quality film of a theatrical performance." – New York Times
The importance of having high quality documentation of artists’ work is an exhaustive list: for the sake of history, for the sake of an artist’s future (to present their work to other curators and as work samples for grants), and for the sake of those who appreciate performance but are unable to afford $30 tickets. OntheBoards.tv offers the chance to experience an artist’s vision and the ability to be challenged, expanded, and blown away by art.
OntheBoards.tv was created give greater access to contemporary performance to anyone with $5 and an internet connection, making it possible to see brand new performances regardless of time, cost, or location. It offers a new revenue stream for featured artists, and has become a premiere place for curators to find work to present internationally.
The very rapid pace of film production and web-hosting technology can sometimes feel daunting for an arts nonprofit. But we’ve seen the impact OntheBoards.tv has on artists and viewers and we know it’s worth the challenge.
WHAT DOES ALL THIS COST?
One OtB.tv film costs approximately $9,000 to make.
- Director of Photography Fee: $1,500
- Editor Fee: $2,550
- Gear Rental: $2,240
- Camera Operators: $1,200
- Sound Engineer: $1,400
- TOTAL: $8,890 x 4 films = $35,560
Required updates to OntheBoards.tv website to ensure the site is strong enough to host all of our content costs about $10,000.
So for everything we want to do we need $45,560.
Through various grants, we already have about $20,000 we can use towards specific projects, and collaborating with Reel Grrls on our Masterclass Series has also helped reduce our costs by about $5,000.
SO, with your help we can raise the final $20,000 we need to make all of these projects look, sound, and play GREAT.
Thank you so much for your support of On the Boards, OntheBoards.tv, and our amazing community of artists. You can follow progress of this campaign and these projects via our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and weekly e-news.
Risks and challenges
To do this work well is not easy. It’s expensive, and the pace of web hosting technology and filming equipment can be difficult to keep up with. BUT we’re committed to this work, we believe in its importance, and have seen its impact both on artists and viewers. We have an incredible team of artists, administrators, designers and filmmakers to help realize this project and the biggest risk we face is the inability to pay everyone what they deserve, which with your help will definitely not be a problem!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
