Dear Friends and Supporters,
I am proud to report that it will be our 5th year of running Annual Chess and Science Festival and All-Girls Tournament in Tucson, AZ!!!
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT YOU PROVIDED IN THE LAST 4 YEARS!
The spontaneous idea to unite Chess and Science in one amazing event and make it special for everyone, but especially for girls has proven to work well!
We started our great adventure in 2013 with the goal to combine chess and STEM disciplines, to help girls develop confidence and critical thinking skills and become successful in male dominated areas, like Math, Science, Business and, of course, Chess.
In short 4 years, our Annual Chess and Science Festivals has become well known not just in Arizona, but around the country. The move to bring more girls into chess and through chess into science has been born. NY, CA, Washington D.C. and many other areas have started to organize all-girls tournaments and work on combining those tournaments with STEM disciplines.
US Chess Executive Board (I am one of the 7 members), US Chess Women's Committee, Top Women Players and many Chess Organizers are working together and individually to attract girls to chess by organizing special events, with lectures, simultaneous exhibitions and game analysis, offering opportunities to socialize during the tournaments, awarding girls / women and mixed doubles (male/female) prizes, as well as college scholarships.
And yet, our Chess and Science Festival is truly special. It builds the bridge between chess and mathematics, physics, chemistry, neuroscience, biology, astronomy, business, entrepreneurship and many other disciplines that would benefit from more girls joining those fields.
Our 5th Annual Chess and Science Festival and All-Girls tournament is scheduled for December 2nd, 2017!
As before, we have tremendous support from the local community:
- Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, University of Arizona will host the event for the 5th straight year!
- Mayor of Tucson, Jonathan Rothschild - who attended all 4 previous events - has confirmed his attendance this year!
- The University of Arizona Department of Mathematics will sponsor lunch for girls participating in the All-Girls Tournament (5th year!)
- I am contributing my time to organize the event and ensure that all logistics are taken care of.
Now, we need your support and participation, so we can organize the Festival at the best level possible!
The event will include the All-Girls Chess Tournament, various science exhibits, museum admission, laser shows and more!
You can find more details at http://chessandsciencefestival.com/
The funds will be needed for numerous expenses associated with running the event - hiring the tournament director and assistant, covering advertising cost, buying scoresheets and a few replacement chess clocks / sets, trophies, certificates, chess books and science kits for prizes, breakfast for participants and lunch for PhD students who run science exhibits. All the funds we receive are going into the event.

Risks and challenges
The number of girls participating in the event has been increasing steadily every year, so there shouldn't be any problems with getting enough players.
However, due to my extremely busy schedule this semester, our Kickstarter campaign is running late. I truly hope we can reach the goal early, so I can order what we need without paying for expedited shipping.
Thank you in advance!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
