WHAT DO 360 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD HAVE IN COMMON?
They suffer from hearing loss. I fear I could be one of them!
In 2008 after a visit to an audiologist for tinnitus I discovered my hearing was reducing in one ear. It made me ponder what would I miss if I was deaf? MUSIC.
I have spent two years learning sign language. This was a difficult task for a dyslexic. The finger spelling alone was so fast and trying to decipher it through a dyslexic brain that needs pictures was almost impossible. I felt isolated not being able participate in the conversations at the same speed as my classmates. It then dawned on me that this must be what it is like for someone deaf participating in an oral world - where almost everybody else is speaking.
So here I am in 2014/15 - on a journey to better understand the everyday challenges of being deaf in an oral world.
It's a fundamental human need to communicate.

Our aim for Blue Mist is to finish it to meet the Festival De Cannes deadline for short film entries on 3rd March 2015.
BLUE MIST PLOT
Blue Mist is a short film about a young couple who set out for a bush walk in the Blue Mountains in Australia. Eve is orally deaf and relies on hearing aids. At the beginning of the walk Eve's hearing aids run out of batteries. She is left to explore the day through her camera without a sonic experience. When she is distracted by the beauty of the mountains she loses her way back to the path and becomes lost, unable to hear the calls from her boyfriend Tom.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Every donation helps us get closer to our target. Please pledge what you can.
This is all or nothing - with Kickstarter we have to meet our target of AU$12,000 to receive any of the donations given. And we have to get AU$12,000 to finish our film and help raise further awareness of the challenges the deaf and hearing impaired community face.
So, please help us - pledge to donate and help us spread the word about BLUE MIST through your social media networks, to help us raise awareness for the project in the wider community. www.facebook.com/bluemistfilm

ABOUT ME - PAULINE FINDLAY
I'm the writer, director and transmedia producer of BLUE MIST. I'm a graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in 2008 in Writing and Producing. I'm also a scholarship student of Metro Screen Multiplatform Producing in 2012. I have written, directed and produced short films, documentaries, theatre plays and community service announcements in Australia and the UK. I have worked on nine documentaries that have aired on national broadcasters ABC & SBS. I have a particular passion for working with teenagers and on topics highlighting social issues. I mentor teenagers with mental health issues through my collaboration with the REELise Film Festival to help them tell their stories. I also run Story Rock Star a Storytelling Consultancy and Production Company. I believe the STORY should be the ROCK STAR of any project.

TEST FOOTAGE FOR BLUE MIST COLOUR GRADE
This unedited short clip shows the colour palette for BLUE MIST. The funds raised through Kickstarter will go towards a professional colour grade to give the film a big feature film feel. NB There is no sound.
THE TRANSMEDIA STRATEGY
I've created a Transmedia strategy to engage my audience in advance of my feature film LOLA, which is a teenage love story about a deaf musician.
BLUE MIST is the first part of the strategy to raise awareness for hearing through the medium of film.
The transmedia strategy will involve the following:-
- LITTLE LOLA - A novella told through the eyes of a seven year old who loses her hearing in one ear.
- LOLA - A teenage novel about a deaf musician who falls in love with a punk rocker.
- MOBILE APP - to bring the deaf and hearing community together through the power of music, released before the feature film.
- MICRO DOCUMENTARIES - on the deaf community, told from their perspective and spread across social media to engage others to tell their stories.
- LOLA - the Feature Film adapted from the novel.
LIV - SHORT FILM TRAILER
My previous short film LIV screened at the prestigious Palm Springs ShortFest and Flickerfest International Film Festival along with many more festivals. The LIV script was nominated by the Australian Writers' Guild for the Monte Miller Award.
LOLA - FEATURE FILM
I have written the script for LOLA, the feature film at the centre of the Transmedia strategy.
Synopsis: Lola loses half her hearing due to genetics by the age of seven. Then after a tragic bicycle accident she loses her remaining hearing at seventeen. Through the power of love she learns to feel the music and become the successful musician she dreams of being.
The LOLA script has been nominated for the Monte Miller Award by the Australian Writers' Guild. It was also a quarterfinalist of the prestigious Nicholl Fellowships for Screenwriting by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a semi-finalist of Final Draft Big Break.
I'm currently writing the novel of LOLA which I will look to publish in 2015 either traditionally or on Kindle.

Risks and challenges
I've been making films since 2006 and this is my eighth short film. I worked with most of the post production crew we are using on 'Blue Mist' on my last short film 'Liv'. I'm therefore confident that we have a great working relationship, and will work together to over come any challenges in order to complete Blue Mist.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
