hi, I'm adrian belew.
Music has been my life's passion since I was 10 years old. I grew up to be an international recording artist and performer, a record producer, and a painter. I've had an incredible career, full of highlights and amazing moments, beyond anything I could have ever dreamed. All the while my goal has been to push the boundaries of music and technology. But there is the one thing that I've been wanting to do my entire life that is just now possible…an evolution in the way we experience music. ￼
FLUX: Music that is never the same twice.
It's a concept that I feel truly fits the times we live in.
Technology has changed our lives so dramatically. Most of us walk around with a small device in our pockets which can do things that only twenty years ago would have seemed miraculous. We are connected to the world, and as a result must deal with a daily flood of information. So, how has this changed us? Our brains are now trained to process information in quick, random bursts--from Facebook and Twitter feeds, text messages, Youtube clips, etc. Our ability to multitask is greater, but our attention spans are shorter. But modern music does not reflect these changes. Besides a shift in how we get music (streaming and downloading), most music has largely remained unaltered, still made in the same format used for over 60 years--the 3 to 5 minute song. Nothing wrong with that, but how about an alternative?
Music. Art. Technology
FLUX is an ever-changing variety of music, songs, sounds, and visual art, that comes at you in quick, surprising pieces--the way life does. You get exposed to a lot of interesting content quickly. And every listen is a new, unique experience, that will never happen again for you or anyone else. While songs do repeat over time, the song forms themselves are short and varied. Songs even appear in multiple versions, with different lyrics and instrumentation. Sometimes a longer song will play in its entirety, but most often you'll only hear a portion of it, which may be interrupted by something else: a startling sound effect or a common everyday noise. There are hundreds of these songs, pieces of music, and sonic "snippets", along with engaging visuals randomly changing with the music. A content management system has been built that let's us assign probabilities to tracks, determining how and when they appear. This ensures that FLUX never plays the same way twice.
FLUX also includes pictures, lyrics, studio notes, backstories about the songs, and interactive ways to share your FLUX experience with your friends via social media. By the way, when you like something, press the "favorite" button, and it will appear in a playlist, where you can hear it anytime you want.
One thing that surely makes FLUX unlike any traditional record, CD, or download: it's never finished! I plan to update the FLUX stream with new content (new songs, more snippets) on a regular basis, making it an evolving creative platform that continues to surprise you.
Behind the scenes at MOBGEN
And now FLUX is nearly ready!
As it is, FLUX has taken over four years of work to write and record. It's taken two years of work from an international team of software developers and visual designers at MOBGEN, based in Amsterdam, to put everything together into a beautiful interface. But there are still features and refinements I would like to add to FLUX to make it perfect. More visual content (equal to the amount of music we have), deeper social media integration, mastering of the music, support for other mobile platforms beyond iOS, and a few other things I can't tell you about yet. We've come this far and I want FLUX to be the best it can be. So I'm asking for your help and involvement.
Why have I set a Kickstarter goal of only $100?
Because I'm crazy. Realistically, FLUX has cost a small fortune, both in time and money. But I believe in it so much…I hope it will be my legacy, the culmination of my contributions. In fact, this is bigger than me and my music, as I see the FLUX concept being useful for other artists, and other forms of media. This could be the beginning. That's where you come in.
Obviously the more funds we have to develop and refine FLUX, the better it will be. But rather than place an arbitrary figure on how much money I hope to raise, I've set a absurdly low goal and left it open-ended in the HOPE that enough adventurous, generous people like YOU will support a new creative direction--those of you who value innovation over the status quo.
I realize this could backfire on me and I could end up with the hundred dollars I'm asking for, instead of the thousands of dollars I actually need. But I prefer to let YOU decide the value and future of FLUX. I hope you're excited…and if it turns out your contributions equal, say, a trillion dollars…I'll buy you Disney World. ;)

Just as important as funding is your participation. I want you to be a part of this, so you're inspired to tell your friends about FLUX, even if you can't back it. That's why I chose to do a Kickstarter campaign in the first place. I learn about so many amazing new ventures from this site--I welcome being part of the Kickstarter community.

Adrian Belew is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist, who has released 20 critically acclaimed solo albums, while working alongside some of the most innovative artists of the past 30 years, including Paul Simon, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, and Nine Inch Nails, among others. For 33 years he was the frontman, singer, and guitarist in art-rock giant King Crimson. Known as a highly inventive guitarist, much of Belew's music mixes pop songwriting with complex time signatures, witty lyrics, wild sounds, and a technical mastery of his instrument. Sound-engineering mastermind Daniel Rowland is an authority on studio production, audio hardware/software, MIDI systems, and sound design. He makes noises, pushes faders, and teaches others how to do the same as a lecturer at Middle Tennessee State University, just outside of Nashville. Daniel designed Adrian's crazy guitar rig, the "Magic Closet", and StudioBelew, as well as helping develop the FLUX concept and app. He has toured the world with Adrian, recording and co-producing the music for FLUX. ￼
Australian-born Nick Mueller is the Executive Creative Director of MOBGEN, an Amsterdam-based agency with a focus on mobile strategy, creativity and technology. Nick leads the creative design, UI/UX and research teams, and has a particular interest in disruptive innovation which comes from an unhealthy obsession with modifying audio/visual equipment of any sort. He wears hats.
