This is RetroSound, which gives the sound that is still somewhere in your memory a 2nd life to your own projects.

Introduction

Welcome to my first Kickstarter project and I hope that many more will come. There are more projects ready to be launched and I hope that I can make a good start with this project.

I have made tons of electronic projects in my life with Arduino, microchip microcontrollers, Raspberry PI, Computers and own designed products. But every time I ended up with the same problem. How to involve an easy way of playing sounds to wake you up in the morning? For example to notify you that the process has finished, to celebrate a new measurement result, to play your birthday song in the morning of your birthday or to warn you about a fire in the house.

Using sounds in your software can use space, time and it gives you other issues. For beginners, it is not easy to play a melody while the code is doing other things. Timers, interrupts, etc. are necessary which are not so easy for beginners in code writing.

The reason why, for example, Arduino contains so many libraries and supports so many shields is to make it possible for a beginner to have a great, good-looking, functional project within days.

Until now there were only some rare audio modules that need an external amplifier to produce sounds. But a shield to produce sounds easily without any external components was missing.

NOT ANYMORE!

Retrosound is connected to your processor by only one wire. It can be connected to your PC, microcontroller, Raspberry PI, Arduino, Beaglebone, Intel board, ESP, Bluetooth module and many many others. It fits in every breadboard. You simply send a UART command to the RetroSound and it will play your song!

It can play melodies and alarms. And you can even connect multiple RetroSounds in parallel to let them all play at the same command. You can have the same intruders alarm or fire alarm in every room of the house.

I built the prototype at home, and I was very positive about the fact that this module is easy to integrate into every project. So I transformed the product in a ready-to-produce module for Kickstarter.

Why your song and why Kickstarter?

I want to use Kickstarter for this project to be able to pay the manufacturing company for the boards. They want to have the money before they start the production, so I need to know how many boards I should order.

Further, I want to use Kickstarter to use your input. There are only some sounds saved now to the RetroSound, so that I have space left for other songs. So when you buy a RetroSound module, you have the possibility to let me know the song you want, it will be added to the RetroSound and it will be shipped to everyone who buys a RetroSound. Even your own written songs can be added to the memory. (of course, it is limited and the songs can be different from the ones in this video)

When there is some money left I would like to transform the Kickstarter to a webshop where I can sell these modules. The money will be used for these kinds of projects. At first, it will be only RetroSound, but other projects will follow.

Help me launching this project. Everyone who supports this project will see their name in the manual of RetroSound.

What if I do not like RetroSound anymore?

Of course, it is always possible that you feel like that you have played enough with the board. That is why there is a second destination for it. The board fits directly to any PicKit and can be used as a really small development board. It has 4 I/Os on the header, a buzzer and an LED ready for many different projects. See it as the Arduino for MPLab.

 Shipping

To keep the shipping cheap, the RetroSound uses a flat connector so that it can be shipped in a bubble-wrap envelope with untracked shipping by normal national post. This is at your own risk. I have sent a lot of posts all over the world without any problems, but always ask yourself, if you had any problems with receiving the post in your country. If you want to play it safe, ask me and I can ship the RetroSound in a box with the parcel service.

The cheap shipping rates are the following:

  • 1 RetroSound shipped to the Netherlands: €1,-
  • 1 RetroSound shipped to anywhere in the world: €2,-
  • 2 RetroSounds shipped to the Netherlands: €1,-
  • 2 RetroSounds shipped to anywhere in the world: €2,-
  • 3 RetroSounds shipped to the Netherlands: €2,-
  • 3 RetroSounds shipped to anywhere in the world: €3,-
  • 4 RetroSounds shipped to the Netherlands: €2,-
  • 4 RetroSounds shipped to anywhere in the world: €3,-

Risks and challenges

There are (almost) no technical risks in this project. The module is working fine and no problems occurred till now. Although I am not good at making videos(as you can see in this campaign video), I know what I am doing with electronics. If there are any problems, I will solve them directly as I am the only person involved in this project so we won't waste any time by contacting others. I have enough experience with the design and production of electronic products to make this Kickstarter to a successful end.

When there will be ordered many RetroSounds, it can be a problem with the time. But I will notice during the funding period so that I can already inform the production company. September should be no problem to ship all the RetroSounds.

The songs used in RetroSound are all free of license and in the public domain.
