This is the First Book of Its Kind
This book is a love letter for Doctor Who fans. It is the first in-depth fancentric book designed for binge watching this popular 56 year-running television show that has riveted science fiction audiences for three generations! The book (and the series) is targeted to Doctor Who fans who are sitting down to rewatch and/or introduce the show to someone they care about who is just starting out or catching up (many people would love to get into the show but don't feel that they have the time to get into a half century's worth of canon - this book is for them!). Riverdale Avenue Books is starting this 13-book series with a look at the 13th Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor in the show’s six-decade history.
We are thrilled to have noted Whovian Mackenzie Flohr bringing this guide to you. An award-winning novelist in her own right, she has been a fan of Doctor Who for as long as she can remember and lists it as the main source of inspiration for her first novel, The Rite of Wands. Mackenzie has become somewhat of an expert, having been a regular speaker at multiple conferences and podcasts for the show.
In addition to the 13 titles in the Doctor Who series, future Binge Watcher’s Guides will include the Harry Potter movies (to be published in December and written by Cecilia Tan), Downton Abbey, the films of Stephen King, Parks & Rec, and many more. As far as we know, this is the first line of books dedicated to nonfiction pop culture. Your support will make sure that this line goes on and will pay for the author's work, as well as massive advertising in major book and geek publications so the whole world knows about these books.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Doctor Who, it’s that people matter.
How many times have you tried to introduce a family member or friend to a show, but you don’t know where to begin? Are you frustrated because you don't have a subscription to BBC America, therefore, have been unable to watch the latest series of the show (the show will stream on HBO starting in 2020). Do you wish you could share your passion for the show with your significant other? If you answered yes to any of these, this fan-centric binge watcher’s guide is for you!
What’s in The Book:
Mackenzie details her road to Doctor Who as well as the role the show has played in her life, and how the first female Doctor plays a significant role in popular culture. She gives you an in-depth look into the day Jodie Whittaker was first announced as our 13th Doctor and the controversy surround it.
Mackenzie takes the reader on an intense journey into the history of Doctor Who. She also takes a closer look into the original pitch for the show and how it has similarities with Doctor Who today. Joined by the brilliant Doctor Who cover designer for Big Finish Productions and Titan Comics, Will Brooks, together they discuss the process behind designing covers for such a major production. The chapter ends with a deeper look into the casting of Jodie and discovers what other people from Doctor Who had to say. And look out for an exclusive interview with The Time Ladies/Doctor Who Magazine’s Time Team’s member, Beth Axford!
Before You Watch
A signature chapter in the Binge Watcher's series, Mackenzie discusses the series’ themes and where we can watch for those themes to unfold. She details the new enemies the Doctor will face, the Doctor’s new costume and tools, and more. Christian Basel, host of one of the newest and hottest Doctor Who podcasts, The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS Radio Show, joins her here with an interview.
Mackenzie dives deep into each episode of the series, fun facts, and production news. A fan-centric show-by-show episode guide, themes and metaphors are revealed and explained. This chapter closes with an exclusive interview with Jodie Whittaker impressionist, Wendy Abrahams, from Theo The Mouse.
If You Only Watch One Episode
Mackenzie has picked one episode from this first series as the one that most epitomizes the Doctor. Find out why she has chosen “The Ghost Monument” as this cornerstone of Jodie's performance!
After You’ve Watched
Mackenzie shares her thoughts about the episodes after she has finished her re-watch of Series 11. She then takes a look into where she’d like to see the show go, what we can confirm we’ll be seeing in Series 12, and discuss some of the more controversial rumors, such as Chris Chibnall possibly leaving, the choice of Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor, and the so called “Not My Doctor” movement. Also look out for another exclusive interview with Alisa Stern, creator of Doctor Puppet.
While you are waiting for Series 12 of Doctor Who, here are other resources you can check out to continue following the 13th Doctor and her friends, as well as connect with other #DoctorWho fans. Why is an established award-winning NY publisher raising funds on Kickstarter?
Because we are launching a new imprint (with a series of at least 11 books) in an area no other publisher has ever committed to (an imprint on binge watching is new), we want to advertise in both the publishing trade and in geek media, which is VERY expensive. We really want the world to know about this book and the series.
Where is the Money Going?
Here's the budget we've worked out for production of the book:
$2,000 – 4 color Publisher’s Weekly ad (publishing trade)
$1,000 – 4-color Kirkus Review Ad (mostly libraries)
$ 900 – Ingram advance Ad (goes to bookstores and libraries)
$700+ (Kickstarter fees, credit card fees etc.
$2,400 author royalties
Minimum goal: $7,000
