I am asking for your help in funding the recording of an album of 10-12 psalms and hymns. This is a project for the Church. I fully expect that those who hear this album will enjoy a great listening experience. But these songs were written to be sung, and the aim of this project is to bring these songs to life in churches and homes and wherever people gather for worship.
To aid church music/worship leaders in learning and leading these songs, I'll also be building resources to accompany the album: chord charts, youtube videos teaching how to play the songs, and song booklets for use at small gatherings like house shows or hymn sings.
Why the Psalms? I believe in the power of singing together. Our whole selves—body, mind, and soul—are engaged when we sing. And the songs we choose to sing form us; they shape who we are and what we love. And because the Psalms are so honest about all of life--from joy and celebration to depths of despair--singing them shapes us into truthful, vulnerable, real people. In other words, the Psalms help us tell the truth and stop pretending. You can hear more of my convictions about singing the Psalms in a sermon I gave here.
How can you help?
We have 30 days to raise the funding goal for this project. Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing platform. This means that if we don’t reach our goal, the project receives no funds, and I return to the drawing board.
Every contribution matters! And because it takes a lot of people to fund a project like this, even if you cannot partner with me financially, you can help a LOT just by telling your friends. Use the SHARE buttons above to post it to your social media. Help me spread the word!
If you look to the right, you will see several "rewards" for different levels of financial support. One of the rewards, for $25 and up, is a bumper sticker:
Hear the Demos
Psalm 104 - Oh Rejoice In All Your Works
Psalm 62 - I’ll Not Be Shaken
Psalm 139 - In You O Lord, I Am Found
With this album, I believe it’s essential to capture the energy of real people playing and singing together. So we will record this album the same way many of the great soul and jazz records of the 20th century were made—with live musicians playing together in a big studio. On top of the rhythm tracks, you will hear string, horns, and a lot of the sounds you've heard on my previous projects.
This will be the 6th album I have been a part of: 3 as artist, 3 as producer or engineer. So it’s not my first rodeo, but it is my first time to do a project of this scope. That is why I am hiring a producer I respect (Isaac Wardell of Bifrost Arts), who has delivered great results with other artists.
Budget & Funding: Good musicians and studios, engineers and producers cost money. The total project budget for this album and accompanying resources is about $28,000, which is in the normal range for a professionally produced album. If you click here, you can see the actual budget I am using and how those expenses break down. I am happy to answer your questions about the project; just click "Contact Me" at the top right of this page.
Of the total project budget, my wife and I are investing 15% out of pocket. If you become a backer of this project, I am committed to transparency and honesty toward you in every step of the process.
Timeline: We are planning to head into the studio in early 2016, probably Jan-Feb. Intended release is early Summer 2016. I will keep backers posted as the project unfolds.
Risks and challenges
Intended release is early Summer 2016, but musical projects can always take longer than expected. I commit to keeping backers informed as the project unfolds.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
