It is a fine brown powder (flour) made only from dried and milled crickets that have been farmed specifically for human consumption. Insect protein is a more sustainable and environmentally friendly protein alternative that can be added to smoothies, baking or any recipe of your choice. Not only is cricket powder better for the environment it also has a number of health benefits as displayed below.
Not only is cricket powder beneficial towards your health it is also sustainable and more environmentally friendly in comparison to other typical natural sources of protein. The human population is predicted by the UN to reach 9.6 Billion by 2050. The resources required for our current diets are not sustainable at the population level we are already at which is 7.5 Billion, Global Footprint Network data shows that the earth can sustainably support about 2 Billion people. It is clear to see that something needs to change and eating insects is looking like a strong candidate for the protein source of the future.
We are sure you would have heard of the saying pound for pound insects have more protein than beef? Well that is definitely true and the following infographics display the numerous advantages of crickets such as the smaller amount of land, water and feed required as well as the smaller amount of greenhouse gases produced to make 1 kg of protein.
The percentage of protein inside each.
The litres of water & grams of feed required per 1 kg of each.
The arable land required & greenhouse gases produced per 1 kg of each.
We have been experimenting with our recipes through 2016 and have previously sold our Primal Bites and Primal Corn Chips at events in the North and South Island to great success and gained positive feedback and recommendations on our products. These include:
• The Hobsonville Farmers Market
• The Crossfit Two 2 Tango Competition
• The Healthy Food Guide Live Expo
• Auckland Food Show 2017 (July - See you there)
NZ postage included in package price. International postage prices will be added onto reward price.
We are two brothers who both share a passion for sustainability and our goal is to refine the way people think about food. Our team consists of Matt (The older brother) a graduate of Commerce from Otago university and Todd (The younger brother) a current student studying Engineering at Canterbury University. In 2016 we were selling our Cricket Powder online and at markets and food shows. This year beginning with our Kickstarter we are launching our healthy snacks containing cricket powder for the public to enjoy and know that they are helping make a difference.
80% of the worlds nations already eat insects but in western countries they commonly have an "ick" factor associated with them. We are trying to normalise the act of eating insects in our culture by incorporating our cricket powder, the most friendly form of eating insects we can think of, into tasty snacks that are a healthier version of their typical forms. This will allow people to understand that insects are actually a beneficial food source and have both health and environmental advantages.
We are launching this Kickstarter to crowd fund the costs for registering our kitchen, creating our packages and bringing our healthy snacks to life.
Here at Primal Future our healthy snacks are made using only natural ingredients. All our corn chips are made using only two ingredients, corn and cricket powder. The corn chips are baked in an oven instead of deep frying and are flavoured with herbs and spices. Our nacho cheese flavoured corn chips use nutritional yeast which is popular as a cheese substitute known for its significant source of some B-complex vitamins. Our Primal Bites are mixed in a food processor and then refrigerated containing no unnatural preservatives. All of our healthy snacks contain our special ingredient cricket powder to provide a natural and sustainable source of protein.
What does it taste like?
Cricket powder is commonly compared to having a nutty flavour. It has a mild taste and usually goes unnoticed when added to smoothies and baking. Cricket powder can be made the star of a dish as well, Its earthy tones compliment many dishes such as mushrooms, pastas and vegetarian burgers.
Normal Protein powders don't agree with me, will cricket powder be suitable?
We have been approached on numerous occasions by people who would like to try cricket powder because they can not tolerate other sources of protein such as whey powder or suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Our cricket powder is organic and 100% natural and has been processed as little as possible to provide a raw form of protein that is also gluten and soy free. We have regular customers who no longer experience the problems they previously had using other protein sources.
How do you use it?
The serving size is 10g which is approximately one tablespoon. Here at Primal Future we add it to our smoothies daily for a protein and nutritional boost. Cricket powder can also easily be added in your favourite recipes by replacing 10% of normal flour with Primal Future cricket powder.

Risks and challenges
We have our own supply of Primal Future cricket powder which is our key ingredient for our health foods. We have registered our kitchen to produce food products. We already source our other health food ingredients of suppliers so therefore should not expect any issues with ingredients but delays or complications are always a possibility.
A potential risk will be that we overfund and therefore have to make more products than expected resulting in slight delays.
If we receive international backers we hope that their are no postage issues and to mitigate this risk we may offer track and trace.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
