It's true that the Elf's outfit isn't the most practical for movement in a traditional sense, but as others have pointed out the Barbarian's and Wizard's are not what I'd personally wear into a dungeon either. She's a mystical being who for all we know floats or flits about on toes, and I personally think the elegance suits her (though I like both dress versions). The eyepatch/bandage seems thematic to me either way. I really like this artwork (even if the thief's hat initially suggested SHE was the archer, to me).

It isn't the choice of an eye patch that people I question, it's whether it even IS an eyepatch. It really does look like a bandage.

IF it helps eye patches are a really good way of moving between heavily light and dark locations as it gives you your dark sight back a lot faster (by changing the eye with eyepatch)

      @maniacal - in basic D&D elf was a class!

Looking again ...I think the eye patch looks really odd on the thief. It suggests a bandage rather than an eye patch. Personally I would suggest dropping the eye bandage/patch altogether...

Oooh. I love the coloring choices! I'm especially fond of the Barbarian's beard and helmet, but I like ll of them a lot. :)

Alex Draper has a really good point...the elf dress on the cover is different. Other than that, I think all of the implementation choices are that of the artist's, and he's doing a great job!

This game is by-far the best looking edition yet, and it keeps getting better.
At first I didn't like the art style in comparison to the original, but after some thought I realized that this makes the game more inviting looking, and it's a very fun look, so I'm all for it! Most of all, this is a much better implementation of the art over the last editions scrawlings!

Doesn't bother me though because it's fantasy.

The barbarian is a beefcake wearing impractical clothing for going fighting in a cold subterranean dungeon with slashy and bitey monsters; the elf is a cheesecake wearing impractical clothing no good for running around fighting in a dungeon. Doesn't bother me though, because it. :-)

I am liking this a lot. Some great character here now.

      Two things:
      1. has the thief got an eye patch?
      2. the cut of the elf dress is diferent to cover of game. Prefer cover of game cut. However would MUCH prefer a shorter Grecian style dress that would allow for speedy athletic movement. yeah basically I want the elf to show some leg...

I at first didn't look all that closely at the drawings and therefore dismissed your comment as being overly worried about represantation of women in fantasy. However, then I looked at the picture again and I have to agree with you. The cut of her dress looks like that of a female celebrity on the red carpet, but not like one of an elf. If you are going for a classical Greco-Roman dress (and it looks like you do) it should be wider.

Other than that (and hoben that I don't really like the art style) the drawings are probably as good as they are going to get.

Is the class just "elf?" That's a race. o_O

I like the active stance and look of these characters

    14. Tony on

The two female characters look kind of the same. Same face, same body shape - like two dolls in different costume.

    15. Isaac Hayward on

Looking great! I'm just worried about how tight the elf's dress is. It doesn't look like she can move very quickly as an archer in that thing.

    16. J Pierce on

Fantastic! Only quibble is with the thief's eye. Is that a patch? It's really kind of unclear and I think that makes it detract from an otherwise terrific set of drawings.

I think these look amazing, great job!
