Oh, and I can totally understand "do I want to spend that much more money on this BG when it won't double my fun rather than buy another BG". Those are decisions we all have to make. But what people seem to fail to realize is that because they produced Soloth and charged the price they did, all of us people who are buying it (I'm buying two copies) are funding stretch goals that people who buy only the BASE game are going to get. Look at these graphs:

      http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/243822264/catacombs-0/#chart-daily

Notice how the number of backers added per day for the week or so was pretty flat, even throughout the Soloth expansion announcement. But notice how instead of pulling in $2-3k per day, we pulled in $10k when it was announced (and that's a partial day) and then $18k the next full day! The KS was going flat and you would probably only gotten a few more stretch goals. Soloth has made it possible for you to get lots of freebies if you only order the base game.

      @Justin

Soloth has almost the exact same amount of components as the base game. The only thing missing is really a board, which is a SG we'll probably hit and they'll throw that in there FOR FREE. However, fewer people are going to be able to afford Soloth (that's just completely understandable), so they will sell fewer and therefore won't get as much of a discount as they would on a larger print run. As such, their price for making it per unit will go up more than for the base.

I can totally understand that people have a limit on how much they can afford, but complaining about it without taking the facts into account is a little silly.

@Rob. Clearly you've never played the Hades expansion for Cyclades. ;)

I agree with the comments below, I've never seen an expansion cost the same amount as the vase game. Disappointing :(

I may have been priced out of this altogether :/ ~$130 ... I hope they reconsider lowering the tier's costs. With a better price point, wouldn't they attract more consumers? I guess they have people dedicated to such decisions, but doubling my pledge seems...too much, too much to ask.

And of course, I realize I don't have to up my pledge. I could just 'be happy' with the base game. But, come on...you know I want all of the goodies, just like most of you. I just didn't expect it to be such a dramatic increase in monies.

(With, of course, the critical point that the funding goal has already been more than doubled, there's no chance that the game isn't going to be made.)

I do understand that producing expansions is going to be more costly per-unit than producing the base game, and the reasons why... but ultimately, as a backer-consumer, my thought processes are going to go something like:

      - I can pay $55 and get access to X amount of Fun with the base game.
      - I have to pay another $55 to get access to Y amount of Fun with Soloth.
      - Is Y going to be anywhere near X? I doubt it, because the fundamental game is about flicking discs, so variety is going to be key, and boards (and thus play spaces) are the easiest-to-understand way to implement said variety, and Soloth isn't going to have any of those.

Maybe Soloth is awesome, maybe the monsters in Soloth are ingenious and cleverly-designed and produce varied gameplay on the same standard boards with the same standard obstacles... but without advice from someone who's played with it, I don't know that. Instead, it's easier to believe that it's like I've bought a home mini-golf set and the manufacturer is asking me to pay the same money for an identical mini-golf set with different coloured balls and clubs.

I admit that expansions are typically disproportionately expensive relative to the base game, as they by definition will sell fewer copies - I think the shock here is because it's exactly the same price as the base game.

I think the following is true though:

      1) The base game is being more heavily discounted than the expansion for this Kickstarter.

      2) The expansion already contains more content than the original Caverns of Soloth - the entire cost of Hordes of Vermin is being split between the base game and expansion.

      3) Soloth is going to be the target of the next round of stretch goals, and since this is going to be a retail product, they want to partly factor in the production/manufacturing costs of these stretch goals.

Wow, the price is... interesting. But I guess the costs will be higher as well as not everyone will get it.
Have to think about upping my pledge to get it.

I'm pretty unimpressed with the price tag attached to Soloth as well, after seeing the component breakdown - no new boards, fewer bits of wood than the base game... a couple more cards?

Can anyone who owns the original let us know why Soloth is so awesome we should be willing to pay as much again for it rather than just belittling anyone who thinks value for money is a thing?

    11. J Pierce on

BTW to answer the other comments, the component breakdown is on the main page now.

Not impressed by people who just post to make sure everyone knows they're not impressed.

To paraphrase Penn (of Penn & Teller)as he used to say on Comedy Central... "I've upped my pledge. Up yours!"

Wow, I'm shocked at the price? Can we get a detailed inventory, because I can't understand how it could be priced the same as the base game?

    19. Alex Draper on

How about a list of contents for Soloth - many will not know what this gem has to offer!

Yeah, it'd be great if it also includes some new boards. This all sounds awesome, but also a bit pricey. I have to think this through.

    21. Adam Fair on

Wow, a bit of sticker shock there! Is there a reason that Soloth is priced the same as the base game, despite having less content? Are new boards being included, for example?

Still really glad to see all of this up there though!
