We are a small family design studio named Hello Yellow House, and our ambition is to create a modern and eco-friendly Christmas tree. Our design is built using sustainable methods and materials, doesn’t leave needles, can handle some bumps from our son and dogs, and packs up neatly. After several years of designing and prototyping we have finally arrived with a tree that we are ready to share on Kickstarter. Its name, Yelka, was derived from the Slovenian word Jelka meaning a ‘fir’ tree. We hope to earn enough support to expand our workshop and create new designs and products in the future. We’d greatly appreciate your support!
We value ecological and renewable methods and materials and chose to work with wood for its natural warm colouring; all of which is sourced here in Slovenia. We work with a local business for the laser-cut stands. The wood is treated with natural oils while the metal is painted using powder coating – the most environmentally friendly method that leaves no paint waste. No plastic is used in the tree or its packaging, and the box is designed for re-use.
Artificial plastic trees do one thing well, and that’s survive for years. We love the idea of longevity and reusing things which encouraged us to develop a more sustainable alternative artificial tree. The tree was designed to fit into a variety of contexts visually, to pack away efficiently, and to last for years.
Assembly is quite quick and straightforward – the stand is composed of a metal base and rods that use two screws to lock together (allen/hex key provided). After that, the branches can be stacked on directly. It can also be done all-at-once by arranging the pieces horizontally on a table and running the stand through the aligned centres.
The trees are available in Small (75 cm/2,46 feet high), Medium (100 cm/3,28 feet high), and Large sizes (150 cm/4.92 feet high).
3 WOOD TYPES
Select from darker walnut, mid-tone oak, and bright maple.
(Note: the large Yelka is only available in oak and maple)
3 STAND COLOURS
Available in Jet Black, Pastel Green, and Pure White.
2 STAND SHAPES
Both sturdy and durable, you can choose either a square or cross base.
(Note: large Yelka trees (150 cm/4.92 feet high) always come with a square base)
We took a lot into consideration when designing the packaging in both the ecologically efficient use of materials and the compact shape for shipping and storage. Each branch has a counterpart that snugly fits together, eliminating the need for extra packing material. We wanted to encourage re-use by making the box a perfect home for Yelka if it’s not being displayed.
The little ones can be quite mischievous around this time of year. Our dogs can be a little clumsy around Christmas trees sometimes, and we know of cats that tend to treat fir trees as scratching posts. The geometric nature of Yelka’s design means decorating and arranging can also a lot of fun with children. With its sturdy base our tree can withstand quite a lot of rough and tumble.
We reached our goal, so now we are offering as an upgrade a laser engraved option for your trees. The laser-engraved parallel lines on the front go the opposite direction to those in the back so you can flip to change orientation.
The price of engraving is €20 ($23) for the small, €40 ($46) for the medium, and €60 ($69) for the large. Just update your pledge and let us know via message that you would like an engraved Yelka. If you have any questions about engraving or how to update a pledge be sure to let us know.
If we reach 10k, we will put on offer a limited pledge of 5 XL Yelka trees, that will be 200 cm (appox. 6.5 ft) tall, oak or maple with a square stand in jet black, pastel green or pure white colour.
Firstly Evgen prepares the exact dimensions before sawing. The holes are then made in the centre of each branch. Following that the branches are lightly sanded (with some help from Tinca and Uroš). Finally, linseed oil is applied. Evgen wipes off the excess oil and, with a little bit of elbow grease, gives it a subtle shine. We work with a local metal company who laser cut and ecologically powder-coat the stands.
For the packaging specified designs are sent to a local company where they are cut into cardboard. After getting these pieces and while still flat, Uroš begins screen printing the design directly onto their surface. Finally the package is assembled, ready to compactly fit the Yelka before shipping.
The felt stockings are made of two pieces of felt in the shape of houses (our studio’s logo) that are then carefully sewn together by Tinca. In lieu of a smokey chimney, colourful ribbons are cut to size and threaded through for hanging.
The greeting cards are made with veneers of the same kinds of wood used for the Yelka. Laser cutting of the wood is done through a local business and after recieving the veneers back we then glue this together with a rich, thick paper.
We at Hello Yellow House are a closely-knit family studio based in Ljubljana consisting of two architects (Evgen and Tinca) and a graphic designer (Uroš). Slovenia is a country where there’s been a long history of woodworking, inspiring us to include it in our designs. Together we strive to create practical and affordable quality products. Our studio’s aim is to create more sustainable interior products, so we’re hopeful that this campaign will help us to continue along our path.
We don’t always work alone though, we’re proud to credit our friends and colleagues who have helped us in creating our campaign:

Tinca Furlan, creator
Uroš de Gleria, creator & project manager

Risks and challenges
Until we earn enough to expand our business to bring our batch production up a notch, or move on to special editions, our production will be limited to what we can do with our current resources. Early-bird rewards are limited to ensure they arrive before Christmas this year. We will be doing everything we can to adapt and prepare for orders beyond that too, though before hitting our goal we cannot promise that non-early-bird rewards will arrive before January. However, rewards backed sooner give us the best opportunity to build and ship worldwide in time for Christmas so if this is important to you please try and back us as early as you can! Feel free to message us if you have any questions about delivery times. Through our updates we’ll keep you posted on where the production is at during and after the campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
