About this project
What I'm crowd-funding is a 96-page, square-bound, Hard-cover art book containing all 31 of the drawings in black and white as well as in colour in addition to some of the still-unseen sketches and unused drawings for the project. This book will also contain an unique 12-page, full-colour horror story in comic form. The financial goal of this Kickstarter is to cover the price of quality printing and attendant shipping fees.
Two stretch goals are still possible; one much more than the other. At $7500 the book dimensions jump to 6x9", this will allow the artwork to be reproduced size-as and allow for a slightly more generous margin.
The final stretch goal is $10,000. If this is reached, the 12-page story will be replaced with a longer, 28-32-page story and the book will step up to 6.85x10" to better present the comic artwork now comprising half of the book. This will also dramatically increase the page count of the book. The stretch goal amount will cover all additional costs of manufacturing, shipping and, eventually, mailing these larger books to the backers
MIDNIGHT HARVEST started as my joining the online Inktober project. In addition to the basic idea of doing a drawing in ink a day for the month of October and sharing the result through social media, I set myself the additional guidelines of drawing the pieces on high quality scrap art paper and maintaining a horror/Halloween theme.
The results of the month's efforts can all be seen here: http://mhpace.daportfolio.com/
I started receiving numerous requests to do a collected book of the drawings. While collecting printing quotes it became clear there was little difference between a black and white book and a full colour one. I decided I wanted to make a book that showed the artwork like this:
I'm an illustrator and writer with over 25 years experience in comic books for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image and other companies, book illustration, storyboarding and concept art. Most recently I've completed a three-part heroic fantasy tale for Dark Horse's Savage Sword anthology, was a contributor to Alex Di Campi's ASHES graphic novel, and I designed the characters and illustrated the covers for the 2013 imagineNATIVE Film Festival in Toronto.
I've loved horror and fantasy stories and imagery my entire life. This is the first time I've found a project that really engaged that darker part of my imagination and I wholly enjoyed creating these drawings, even while some of them scared me.
Is This Your First Time Here?
Kickstarter is a rapidly growing crowd-funding platform so there are always new people going through the process of pledging support for a project. The fine folks at Kickstarter HQ have put together a FAQ (frequently asked questions) that includes the most common answers people would like when backing their first project. You can find that page by clicking this sentence.
I think I've put together a solid set of reward packages for you to choose from.
The PDF Edition
At $5.00 you will receive a PDF of the book. While I'm addicted to paper, I accept not everyone lives to fill bookshelves in the same way as I do. This reward is for you and will be sent as soon as the files are assembled for the printer!
Printed Copy of Midnight Harvest
For $25 dollars you get the full-colour 72-page, hard cover printed book delivered to your address. Being able to put a printed copy of this book in your hands the real reason for this project! You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
A Signed Copy of Midnight Harvest
For $30 I will gladly sign your copy of the printed book to you or the person of your choice if this is to be a gift. I very much enjoy signing books for people as it does create more of a connection between my and my audience. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
A Signed and Remarqued Copy of Midnight Harvest
The frontispiece of the book will be designed for signing and sketching and the reward for backing this project at the $50 level is a signed copy, remarqued with a quick (15-30 minute) sketch consistent with the contents of this book. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
For $100 you will receive 1 signed and remarqued copy of the book and an additional 5 copies. This is perfect for retailers who would like to carry a small stock of the books.
Signed and Remarqued Copy of Midnight Harvest and One of the Original Pieces of Art from Midnight Harvest
Limited to 1 of each piece.
For $150 you will receive a signed and remarqued copy of the book as well as one of the original pieces of artwork for the book. The pieces will be put up in batches over the next few weeks. The artwork will be shipped with the book when it's printed. Any remaining works, if there are unsold rewards at this tier, will be made available first to backers of the project, then the general public. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
Signed Copy of Midnight Harvest and a Custom Drawing
Limited to 10.
For $250 you will receive a signed copy of the book and I will create a new pen and ink drawing on 9x12" bristol board for you. This may be a completely new idea along the thematic content of the project of a new interpretation of your favourite piece from the book. I'm adding a little more time to deliver this reward to allow for any delays in communication around the creation of these pieces. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
Signed Copy of Midnight Harvest and a Large Custom Drawing
For $350 you will receive a signed copy of the book and I will create a new pen and ink drawing on 11x17" bristol board for you. As in the description, this will be treated as a private commission, and is wide open for your choice of visual content or characters. I'm adding a little more time to deliver this reward to allow for any delays in communication around the creation of these pieces. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
Signed Copy of Midnight Harvest and the Cover Artwork
Limited to 1.
For $700 you get a signed copy of the book and the large, original artwork on 11x17" bristol board for the cover of the book. You also get a copy of the book in PDF when the files are assembled for the printer.
Signed Copy of Midnight Harvest and a Giclee Print
In addition to a signed copy of Midnight Harvest and the PDF edition, you can choose one from the following 11x17" giclee prints as part of your reward for backing this project.
A Note on Shipping and International Backers
All rewards have Canadian shipping and handling already included!
International supporters, please add additional stated amounts in each pledge for international shipping and handling to either U.S. or choose the international shipping reward.
All sales are final. Packages may be insured and tracked by your request, and all claims for damaged packages/goods must be made with the shipping carrier.
Over-Pledging for Additional Items
One of the backers for this project pointed out I could offer additional rewards for over-pledging. You aren't limited to the support at the listed reward values. While I really can't add multiple art rewards, I can offer as many additional copies of the book, the 11x17' giclee prints or the smaller 8x10" giclee prints of the drawings from Midnight harvest as you desire.
The one prerequisite I require to avoid additional shipping fees is you are already backing this project at a giclee print level that already accommodates the larger shipping container size or a reward involving original art. If you are already pledged for a book and interior print, you can pledge for as many additional 8x10" prints as you like. If you have already pledged for an 11x17" print you are free to pledge for as many 8x10" or 11x17" prints as you like. Your preferred prints and number will be clarified when you complete the backer survey. Again, if you are already backing an original art reward, any additional items will be included in the already established shipping fees (if any).
- for each additional 8x10" 6-colour giclee print of your choice from Midnight Harvest please add $5. There are no limits and you do not have to choose until the project survey after this Kickstarter is successful.
- for each additional 11x17" 6-colour giclee print of your choice from those offered please add $15. There are no limits and you do not have to choose which prints you want until the project survey after this Kickstarter is successful.
- for each additional copy of the printed Midnight Harvest book please add $25.
- for each additional signed copy of the printed Midnight Harvest book please add $30. If you want these personalised as a gift to another person, this will be addressed during the project survey after the project is successful.
- for each additional signed and remarqued copy of the printed Midnight Harvest book please add $50. If you want these personalised as a gift to another person, this will be addressed during the project survey after the project is successful.
The Stretch Goals
I'm optimistic about reaching my goal with this project, and I'm hopeful of exceeding it as well. With that in mind I thought it a good idea to think ahead about potential stretch goals. I think stretch goals should benefit all backers as much as possible and so I've chosen to put such bounty directly into the book itself if we cross the goal line early. Further, if you think these additional goals are worth while, you might be more amenable to asking your friends to support my project as well.
$5500 -- Hard Cover -- Goal met!
If we raise this amount, a hard cover edition becomes possible and everyone who backed a print edition reward will receive this nicer and more durable edition. There will be a little more work on my end, primarily in designing the end papers for the binding, but it's the sort of work I love.
$6500 -- Short Horror Comic
If we reach this goal I'll write, draw and colour a short horror tale especially for this book. This will add several more pages to the book, likely bumping the page count to 96.
Which Pieces Are Taken/Still Available?
The chart below shows what original art pieces from the book are still available as rewards. It was be updated as often as needed as quickly as possible.
Additional Art Rewards
More art rewards!
Every year I try and make a zombie drawing the first thing I post to my blog. The above was this year's. It's available for $150 with a signed, remarqued edition of Midnight Harvest as well as the PDF edition of the book.
The last page from the adaptation of Robert E. Howard's Men of the Shadows I drew for Dark Horse's Savage Sword #5. It's available for $500 with a signed, remarqued edition of Midnight Harvest as well as the PDF edition of the book.

The first drawing and test piece for my long in-development adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth. It's available for $300 with a signed, remarqued edition of Midnight Harvest as well as the PDF edition of the book.
The second page from the adaptation of Robert E. Howard's Men of the Shadows I drew for Dark Horse's Savage Sword #5. It's available for $500 with a signed, remarqued edition of Midnight Harvest as well as the PDF edition of the book.
This 11x17" original Red Sonja drawing is available for $400 with a signed, remarqued edition of Midnight Harvest as well as the PDF edition of the book.
This was a drawing for a Robert E Howard journal, Two-Gun Raconteur for an article about how Howard described the Hyperboreans opposed to how they've been depicted in the comics and games. This is available with a signed and remarqued copy of the book for $100.
This piece is a pin-up for Mark Sable and Salgood Sam's Dracula: Son of the Dragon project (You can look over here.). I'm very happy with how this one turned out! You can have this piece of artwork, a signed and remarqued copy of the Midnight Harvest art book as well as the PDF edition for just $300.
I tried my hand at doing a weekly gag strip a while back and one of my favourite pages was inspired by how my son and students were suddenly living and breathing Skyrim when it came out. You can have this, a signed and remarqued copy of Midnight Harvest and the PDF for a pledge of $200.
I found a box of my comps of this very hard to find prestige-format mini-series by Mike Mignola, Troy Nixey, and myself a while back. The books are all in excellent condition, having never been read. I had enough copies to make 8 sets of them, but backers picked up 4 of them yesterday while they were exclusive. The sets are on ebay for $70-90, so I think there are people wanting these.
I'm offering a set of these books (signed, if you like), a signed copy of Midnight Harvest, and the PDF edition for $100 (+ $20 shipping to the US).
Years ago I was asked to draw a licensed comic based on Vampire: The Masquerade. I was initially very excited. What I knew of the game mean the comic would be full of the sort of stuff I love to draw. I was asked to draw an example of how I'd handle the visuals to get licensor approval and so I drew the above and I was actually quite happy with it.
The level of disappointment with the script cannot be described with words alone - you'd need to see the reflexive shudder I experience whenever I recall it! Instead of the creepy, gothic and sexy world of darkness, the story was a period tale set in WWII Germany (which itself isn't the issue, far from it) staring a caricature of a pre-war New Yorker vampire, complete with baseball cap, outrageous accent, and a scene of him taking out a machinegun emplacement with a thrown rock prior to yelling "STEEEEEERRIIKE!"
That said, I still really like the above piece as it was the closest I got to drawing my ideal vampire comic. You can have this artwork with a signed and remarqued copy of the book for $150.
Hmm - -actually think I might colour this and add it to the book if I can find room for it.
Kicking It Forward
I just found out about this cool website concept. It's best explained by a quote pulled from their webpage:
Any project creator that puts the KickingItForward.org URL on their Kickstarter project page is agreeing that they will put 5% of their finished product profits back into other Kickstarter projects.
Risks and challenges
As all the Inktober pieces are drawn and I've already started colouring them there's no risk of this getting bogged down in the creation stage. As of December 12 I've coloured 16 of the 31 drawings. I've also set the delivery deadlines out further than I expect to need. Having made that statement, this is my first go-round dealing with the printing and shipping of a book with the added element of meeting the interests of Kickstarter backers.
With that last element in mind, I have designed the majority of the rewards to easily be delivered along with the book avoiding weird shipping or sourcing problems I've seen elsewhere. I apologise to everyone who wanted a T-shirt or poster level reward, but just the cost of shipping within Canada makes that very prohibitive, let alone the significantly higher costs to the US or Europe. Further, I do have concerns that adding other, significantly different rewards requiring different production processes might interfere with delivering the book in a timely fashion.
There is the potential of the highest stretch goal putting a small strain on the deadline as it would replace the 12-page comic story with a 28-page one, constant updates and communication will ensure there are no surprises or compromise on the quality of the work
My printer has been very helpful and has a solid record of quality and timeliness.
Further, I've been on the backer-end of crowd-funded projects where the creators disappeared into their studios and went silent. It's anxiety provoking, even if I'm confident they'll eventually deliver the rewards they promised. I'll be committing to make weekly updates through to the point the book is sent to the printer and again after the printed books have been delivered until all the rewards have been sent.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
