As a young ceramic artist I am continuously carving out the path of my career and life. My efforts are most often shaped by the environmental setting in which I live and work. By using indigenous clays and firing exclusively in wood fueled kilns, I keep my hands, heart, and mind close to the earth. The process is laborious, but the ability to interact with nature directly and share this dialogue with others brings great joy to my life.
I have been given the wonderful opportunity to work alongside an international group of ceramic artists and share my work, ideas, and experiences during The 2nd European Wood Fire Conference – held at Guldagergaard (pronounced gool-aya-goh), an international center for the ceramic arts located in Skælskør, Denmark. The conference itself will take place on August 28th – 31st. In addition there will be a pre-conference residency beginning August 1st. I have been accepted to participate as an Artist in Residence and present a 30 minute lecture on the topic 'Wood Firing Now' during the conference.
About The Conference
The 2nd European Wood Fire Conference will bring together an international community of ceramic artists and individuals at different professional levels who share a common interest in the use and appreciation of wood fired ceramics. As a tool for reaching vast aesthetic, conceptual, and practical goals within the realm of contemporary ceramic art, this particular firing method presents many unique opportunities for research, education, and cross cultural learning.
The program will consist of lectures, demonstrations, and exhibitions related to advancements and findings from personal research within the field. A special emphasis will be placed on the emerging younger generation of wood fire artists, who will have the opportunity to share their work, ideas and experiences with the global community at Guldagergaard.
Leading up to the conference will be a month long residency from August 1st -31st during which a small group of international artists will work together to make work, share ideas, build and fire wood kilns kilns in preparation for the exhibitions.
While I have set aside a large portion of my own funds required for the trip, I am seeking assistance in raising additional money to apply toward the costs of travel, program fees, materials and firings. The following budget displays this portion of my costs:
- Transportation (includes round trip airfare, train, bus ticket) $1380
- Residency fee (includes studio and housing for the month) $914
- Firing/Material fees (includes costs of clay, glaze, and wood) $795
- Return shipping of work created in Denmark $309 Total = $3398
How This Would Benefit My Career
Having extensively researched this firing method and related topics over the past four years, I have begun to shape my own voice within the diverse history of the wood fired ceramics. To work as an Artist In Residence would allow me to become engaged with a global community of artists who are developing their own voices as well. Being a part of this community will offer insight into new ways of marketing, selling, networking, and making. The opportunity would also allow me to network directly with many established artists who have been influential throughout the formative years of my career. The ability to present during the conference will allow me share my unique approach to using indigenous clays and specific firing techniques. It is my hope that these techniques will inform others and merge into the larger collection of approaches, thus helping to advance the field as a whole.
For each donation of $30 or more you will receive a piece of handmade ceramic art - made from indigenous Virginia clays and fired in the anagama at The Cub Creek Foundation. Please visit my rewards blog to view images of all available pieces in each donation level and instructions for requesting specific rewards.
Domestic shipping is included in each donation. Additional payment may be needed for international donors. I will work with each donor individually to calculate a specific shipping cost to his/her country after the donation is made.
Risks and challenges
Small rewards for donors will be shipped prior to my departure for the conference. However, due to time constraints I cannot guarantee that all packages will be shipped during this time period. Any unshipped rewards will be mailed upon my return. I anticipate having all packages shipped before September 15th.
Please note that each piece varies slightly in size, color, form, and surface. While I work in series, I allow room for subtle variations within the group. I can provide additional photos of rewards for those who would like to choose specific pieces for their gifts. However, the ability to choose will be on a first come, first serve basis.
