An update about your rewards:

During the process of setting up this campaign, we did not realize (when asked to estimate shipping) YOU would be charged shipping if you chose one of the rewards (at least this is what a couple of our backers have pointed out). And we definitely do not want that!

So here's the deal: if you want one of the rewards for your contribution (and we really want you to want one), AND you are asked to cover shipping, choose "No Reward" to avoid shipping costs.

We will be contacting all of our backers when we meet our goal for shipping details, and of course, plan to cover the shipping costs ourselves. So be sure to donate. Those $1.00 donations go a long way. And of course, we are REALLY looking forward to drawing fancy stick figures!

With our love - the Map Evansville Team

Our history:

With endorsements from several community leaders and two small grants, Map Evansville began in 2014 setting out to measure and document the existing resources and areas of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender inclusivity that exist in Evansville and the surrounding area. These efforts resulted in an interactive and searchable online map.

With our grant cycle coming to a close at the beginning of April, we are seeking to continue our efforts with external funding. And of course, that's where this campaign comes into play.

Where we are (and where we want to go):

On March 26th, Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, also known as RFRA. Given sexual orientation and gender identity are not protected classes under Indiana law, opposition spread across the nation rapidly and the number of business members listed on our Map Evansville database increased substantially. As such, we have outgrown our current software. With your help, we can sustain this project (and our project leader can start paying her student loans again!).

In order to accommodate our growing membership and meet the requests of our users, we are seeking to upgrade our software and develop a mobile app. Our budget of $4,349.00 will provide us with the ability to do the following:

  • Purchase a software package for the interactive database/map designed to handle high volume usage
  • Develop and launch a free mobile app for android and apple users
  • Continue to provide businesses with Map Evansville window decals
  • Maintain our website domain and online survey

With this funding goal and your help, we can sustain this project for two years, and show the nation how inclusive we are in Southern Indiana.

Be sure to check out our Facebook page for updates and photos of the rewards! Any funds obtained over our goal will go toward sustaining the project costs beyond the projected two years.

Risks and challenges

With any project comes set-backs. We hope to ease any doubts you may have by outlining potential areas of set-back and our plan to tackle them.

- App Design:
Although we are not technology savvy folks, we are fortunate enough to know a few people who are; hence, we will utilize our existing networks to tackle any problems that may occur. For example, the project leader will be able to utilize computer technology students who may wish to be involved in community outreach or volunteer service.

- Continued funding:
We anticipate, within our projected two year time frame, that Map Evansville will become self-sustaining through financial partnerships. If we do not meet our funding goal, other avenues will be sought in order to keep Map Evansville going.

- Continued participation:
The project is successful only as long as community organizations, businesses, and service providers participate and community members utilize the service. Hence, one obstacle is ensuring continued participation. We plan on utilizing social media, local media, and local contacts to help encourage continued participation.
