"It is never too late to begin the practice of Hatha Yoga."
"If one desires a fine mind, a fine body must first be developed."
"I can assure the reader that surprising results will be attained through patient practice of the asanas described in this book." - Buddha Bose, 1938
In 1923 Sri Bishnu Charan Ghosh founded the Ghosh's College of Physical Education. He trained students in Yogic Physical Culture, a combination of Indian and Western practices for the health of body and mind. Ghosh had many students, including the well known Bikram Choudhury, but before Bikram there was another star student and protege, Buddha Bose.
Bose made such progress under Ghosh's tutelage that within six months, he was asked to perform asana and give demonstrations in front of large crowds. Bose went on to write and publish the book Key to the Kingdom of Health through Hatha Yoga Vol. 1, which details 24 foundational asanas. It was unknown whether Volume 1 was part of a larger collection.
Uncovered by Jerome Armstrong along with Ida Jo and Scott Lamps, 84 Yoga Asanas, by Buddha Bose is set to be published and made available to all yoga scholars and practitioners. The book contains 84 postures, and 10 mudras, with 96 photos and descriptions for each asana that include instructions of technique, breathing, and timing. With this collection, we have a pristine view of how Buddha Bose and Bishnu Ghosh formulated and advised the asana practice of hatha yoga.
This collection was formulated specifically for "Westerners" to learn and "know Hatha Yoga well enough to teach it." Buddha Bose wrote in the included preface on July 23rd, 1938, that: "It is for this reason that I decided to publish a book which through its simple directions and profuse illustrations will enable any interested reader immediately to begin the practice of this very beneficial system of physical culture."
"The practice of certain asanas gradually awakens this power in man, thus enabling him to master his mind. Therein lies the exceptional value of these exercises... I offer the reader the key to the kingdom of health and happiness... Can you afford to miss it?" - Buddha Bose, 1938
With the funding of this project, we will have professional photographic reproductions done of Buddha Bose's originals, and then recreate the entire collection of 84 Yoga Asanas in high quality book format, to distribute this fall.
Risks and challenges
We have gone to great extent to meet with the family of Buddha Bose and gain their insight into the history of the collection in preparation for distribution. We hope the publication of it will go smoothly. Our motive is not to profit from this publication. We seek to further expand access to this healthful system for the benefit of all. After costs and expenses are covered, we intend to use the excess amount to further yoga training of family members and students in Calcutta. Our timeline is ambitious, and we may wind up with a delay of a few months if production exceeds our targeted timeframe.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
