My awesome grandfather Louis is 93 years old. I recently spoke to him about his experience and have over two hours of our audio interview. Thankfully, he detailed his struggles during WWII in which he survived two concentration camps in Poland and Germany. Later, he spent several years in displaced persons (DP) camps in Germany and eventually made his way to the United States. He has a truly amazing story...I don't want to give away any spoilers here. Needless to say, I'm excited to turn his story into both a podcast and a book. People tend to believe that the Nazis only imprisoned Jews; my grandfather was and is a Polish Catholic, and this adds another layer to the story.
Here is a sample of him speaking about his experience:
The vision of the podcast is to break apart the interview into logical "Chapters" that will also fit the order of the book. The title of each chapter of the book/podcast will be a word in Polish that fits the story. I will include clips of the interview and then provide more background to support my grandfather's account.
For example: Chapter 1: Dom [Home] , Chapter 2: Zdobycie [Capture], etc.
In order to do this project complete justice, I need to travel to Poland and Germany, visiting and researching further his hometown of Rseszow in addition to the camps he was in at Pustkow, Poland and Sachsenhausen, Germany, respectively. Sachsenhausen has been transformed into a Holocaust Memorial and Museum.
I love being a high school science teacher; however, this does not provide a great deal of extra money to travel across the world. I have estimated the total trip to Poland and Germany to cost approximately $3000.
I understand that people typically run a Kickstarter campaign after their product is ready for release, but this is a special situation. Also, I have previously published a successful podcast on education entitled Principally Speaking, which can be found on iTunes here. Although I will be doing all of the behind-the-scenes work on the podcast, It still costs money to host it online. I am doing all of the book design work, website design, and podcast development and editing in order to keep the cost down.
I don't like when people ask for money without justifying the amount they claim they need. Here is the breakdown of why I'm asking for $5000:
Project Budget Breakdown
$3000 for trip to Poland & Germany
$1600 in order to publish the hardcover book
$250 for podcast expenses (mic, hosting on server)
$150 for website hosting: www.mynamewasnomore.com
Already Completed: Develop website / podcast art / record grandfather
June 2018: Travel to Poland/Germany
June - August 2018: Work during summer break to complete book/podcast
September 2018: Ship books and release podcast
My grandfather has endured a great deal of hardship in his life, losing his wife to Alzheimer's and daughter (my mom) to ALS. I know the completion of this project would mean a great deal to him and my family.
If you're interested in more than 4 books you can simply add $25 to your pledge per book wanted. If you don't want 4 or more copies of the book I understand that too; you do have the option to pledge more and only receive one book. :)
Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
Risks and challenges
This is a very low-risk venture. Once I travel to Poland and Germany, I will complete the book and podcast. I plan on having this all completed by September of 2018, in time for my grandfather's birthday. I will work like crazy during my summer break from teaching. Again, if you're willing to help me in any way, thank you!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
