The belt has always been a wardrobe staple, but it's typically seen as a something that is both nondescript and easily replaceable. We wanted to make a belt that was both new and exciting, and one that you could wear every day for years.
Our unique hardware is both functionally fun and striking in its clean design. Jack Iron products are elegant and built for rugged day-to-day real life, only getting better over time as the leather patina deepens and the fit conforms perfectly to your body.
Jack Iron is an American Brand
We have made an effort to source as many components as possible from the US. Our supply chain spans many historic hubs of American manufacturing. We source fine leather from Pennsylvania, shackles from Connecticut, rivets from North Carolina, and fasteners from Ohio. In developing our product, we partnered with an industrial engineer in Rhode Island, and our original prototypes and inspiration came from Maine as well as Long Island, New York.
Locally sourcing ensures that we are able to check in on production, see quality craftsmanship in action, feel the finished product, and shake hands with our trusted small business partners.
All our leather accessories are strapped and assembled by hand in a small industrial warehouse along the Hudson River in Red Hook, Brooklyn under the supervision of our master craftsman, Alan Hangad. He shares with us his talents and over thirty years of experience nurturing many of today’s pre-eminent American fashion brands before they became household names.
We launched Jack Iron because we wanted to turn an idea into action. We hope to encourage others to try their hand at something new just as we did, to build something of their own, to go through that exploration process of learning and bringing inspiration to fruition.
We owe a great debt of gratitude to the many relationships we’ve built along the way with industrial designers and manufacturers who helped us push the boundaries of what we were told was possible. Countless times we heard, “Nobody does this anymore,” “Too many small, mechanical pieces,” and so on. Nevertheless, we stayed the course.
Inspired by our nautical heritage, Jack Iron brings sea-worthy, rugged design and functionality to your modern lifestyle.
The Snap Shackle Belt is Jack Iron's signature dry good. Its unique buckling mechanism, rich leather, and practical beauty are perfect for everyday—or adventure.
The snap shackle is a powerful piece of nautical hardware, cast in stainless steel and used by sailors to hoist sails and secure lines while a boat is underway.
We have taken our inspiration—the snap shackle—and transformed it into our own signature hardware. To do this, we had to learn a little bit of just about everything from boatbuilding, design, and engineering to metal casting and leather crafting.
Our hardware is tied to the art and science of sailing and exploration. We’ve spent five years refining the sailboat snap shackle into two exclusive clasps: the Hitch Shackle and the Bowline Shackle. We have fondly named them after sailor knots.
Our signature snap shackles are found in each style of our belt, dog leash, and key fob. Each piece has its own unique character that we hope will make our customers feel confident and inspired.
The clasping action of the hardware in the assembly of the belt puts minimal stress on the leather, lying flat against your body and ensuring that your belt ages beautifully, becoming more valuable to you over time.
The mechanics of the piece allow you to adjust the snap under a little bit of tension with just one free hand.
Who We Are
We are Chris Schmidt and Dave Bruenner, self-taught designers, entrepreneurs, and the co-founders of Jack Iron. We met while working together in Boston many years ago. Dave hails from Long Island and is currently pursuing an MBA at Babson College. Chris grew up in Chicago and resides in Seattle, WA where he works in retail e-commerce.
Dave studied boatbuilding at The Landing School in Kennebunkport, Maine. He learned how to wield a Handplane and a Drawknife, slowly developing his designer’s eye.
With our personal roots in Seattle, Boston, Long Island, and Maine, our company draws creative inspiration from the hubs of America’s rich nautical history. We named our company after a boat owned by Dave’s grandfather that was moored off the coast of Gardiners Bay, Long Island, New York.
For our virgin launch, we are offering two styles of our Snap Shackle Belts as well as our Dog Leash, Key Fob, and Travel-Lite Wallet. We also offer a variety of combinations of these products.
Our products are steeply discounted off Retail prices because we want to reward our very first customers. This is our first major production run in the US, and we need your help to make this dream a reality. Our prices reflect the uniqueness and complexity of our signature hardware, our American cowhide leather, and our strapping and assembly done individually by hand in small batch quantities in Brooklyn, New York. We stand behind the quality of our accessories, which we designed to thrive over decades of use.
Our initial Kickstarter offering is available exclusively in the United States and United Kingdom. For international inquiries, please contact our team at firstname.lastname@example.org. For media inquiries, please contact email@example.com

Jack Iron belts are sized from the tip of the shackle to the middle adjustment hole or loop. See below for sizing guide.
For Men: To determine your belt size, measure the circumference of your hip. As a rough guide, your belt size is typically one size larger than your pant or jeans size (e.g., if you wear a size 36" pant, you will require a size 38" belt).
For Women: To determine your belt size, measure the circumference of either your hip or waistline, depending on your style preference. Your belt size is +1 size up from that measurement.
*Waistline-styled belts measure around your natural waistline (at the navel, generally the smallest part of your torso).
*Hipline-styled belts measure around the fuller part of your hips (in line with low rise jeans or pants).
