Aeronautical Races Illustrated: The Schneider Trophy ArtBook
An encompassing fully-Illustrated Art Book of The Schneider Trophy races, inc. craft development, circuits, crew & pilot biographies.
PROJECT & CONTEXT:
82 years ago the British won the Schneider trophy for the third time. The result of this, under the rules, that they got to keep it. Following just 12 races in 18 years, since 1913, the average speed rose by a factor of 7! To put this into context, had the rate of development have continued, as witnessed during these races, then the Red Bull Racers would be today flying at speeds of 2432 mph. As things stand they operate a top speed of around 260.
This project is to bring to print the most encompassing account of these amazing races and aircraft.
The pilots who flew these racing vehicles were averaging lap speeds at only 3% below their plane's maximum speed - roughly 380 mph. The competition for the trophy, won in 1931, had resulted in the development of float planes that could comparatively challenge and exceed the performance of land based planes.
It started out as just another standard plane races and broke away into what swiftly became government funded events, upon which the outcome of World War 2 may very well have been determined.
I feel this these races have also social context to what is happening - particularly in these times of recession. Visiting air-shows across the UK I know how these terrific events can enthral crowds; making memorable family events. We have recently lost our our event here in the South East of England due to a lack of support from a biased council. Thousands of people have partitioned against its closing; an air show of equal scope and ability to those that attend other major seasonal events such as the motor revival in Chichester - both featuring in past events amazing display teams such as the Red Arrows and the Royal Navy Black Cats. This has inspired me all the more to focus on bringing out the excitement of these older historic races.
Events and days out are required by our economy more than ever - as more people buy and sell online, out high-streets fail, their overheads are so great due to pressure from tax and energy bills to run their units. If they cannot regain everyday custom from the people on the streets through competitive prices then they can still flourish by providing good service and an experience. Air-shows like that of Southend, National Art Displays and Sailing races all bring in people and allow for our street vendors to celebrate and sell their wares; spirit high from a unique event and new introductions.
This book, with your help to get it off the ground, can help play a part in this - remind people how great these days in a year can be, why we love them, why by tradition we enjoy spending our weekend at these events and maybe we can regain a little of the joy that the recent times of recession have plundered.
I have the support of a good team, a broad skill set available to call upon, and with the stacks of information already accumulated for this project, I know this book can succeed, becoming something beautiful for people to enjoy owning.
So, thank you immensely for taking the time to read about this project, lets make this project take flight!
The art book will be 250 pages full of illustrations, diagrams and vivid accounts based on real reports and articles from the day. This book will be visually driven: firstly functioning as a piece of art, secondly a source of information.
Risks and challenges
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the key challenges with this project is the collection of all the data - its is simply vast! Prior to initiating this project I have worked on an application and web articles related to this project so I know that I have all bases covered.
I am confident that I can get this project to succeed with sufficient backing - I have made the connection to some of the top art - book printers and have agreements with them on a strict time basis.
My background in animation and working as a creative art worker has allowed for me to branch out and make some brilliant connections to talent within and surrounding the industry for guidance to ensure a quality finish - I don't want to produce a book of images and text just slapped onto a page - It will be beautiful and enjoyable to own and this will be ensured by working with professional layout tools and processes so that the final product is produced as a cohesive and well planned object.
While I have a solid programme of works established to hit key targets and provide the returns, should time issues occur then I have the support of those I have worked alongside in the past and have no fear that ground can be made-up.
The printers I have approached have a proven track record and I feel secure in working with them. If my chosen printers for whatever reason are unable to complete the order then I have looked into appropriate alternatives.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
