What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Kickstarter Has Been Great But . . .

Over the five weeks of our campaign we have had a lot of traffic and video views. At the time I am writing this there are only three days left. We have had 1,200 visit to our page and 930 unique visitors. Visitors have stayed on the page for an average of 41 seconds (an eternity in internet time). Our campaign video has been watched 336 times. 37% of those video viewers have watched to the very end.

These numbers are great but have not translated into funding. However, we have decided there is enough interest in the project to continue its development. If you would like to follow our progress please visit our site at flexibleschoolschedule.com and sign up for our newsletter.

What is Flexible School Schedule?

Flexible School Schedule is unique because it is designed around the pace of each child and the life of the family, not rigid dates and times on a calendar. It’s structured enough to keep you on track but flexible enough to let life happen.

Plan your year by flexible terms and weeks per term, not rigid dates and times on a calendar that tend to come undone once real life begins to happen. One of the reasons many of us chose to homeschool was so each child could move at their own pace. And when we homeschool, life still happens (sickness, family, even the occasional bit of fun). Rigid plans are not workable plans because homeschool life is rarely rigid.

Can one child go faster with math? Does another need to go a little slower with reading? Flexible School Schedule can handle it. Even if you must stop school for a couple of days, simply pick back up right where you left off. No alerts screaming that you’re falling behind and no piling up supposedly overdue work onto the current day. Move through each subject at the proper pace for each child.

Flexible School Schedule is about recording what you actually did, when you did it and how long it took you to do it. Progress bars provide an overview of each child’s advancement. Beautifully formatted, customizable and printable reports keep your records up to date and assist you with fulfilling state requirements.

Flexible School Schedule works with your life, not against it.

Our Story, By Phillip Gore

One Good Idea
Developing web applications for clients is fun, but I have always wanted to start a business around an app of my own. An app that would actually help people - people I knew and understood. I was always on the lookout for that one good idea, never realizing it was under my nose the whole time.

One afternoon I was watching my wife Lanaya fill out the paper schedule she uses to organize homeschool. I began to ask questions about how it worked. When I realized she used flexible timeframes rather than rigid dates on a calendar, a light went off in my brain. I had my one good idea - Flexible School Schedule.

Analogue Girl - Digital Boy
I jumped right in designing the data structure and doing mockups of the interface. Lanaya patiently answered my questions and gave helpful feedback, but she wasn’t so sure. Lanaya loves paper! Binders, folders, worksheets, physical books. So warm. So real. She was not convinced that she wanted her beloved paper schedule turned into a digital app.

But the analogue girl had married a digital boy, so she patiently indulged me until the day I walked her through mockups of the interface. When she was able to concretely see what the app would be, it changed everything. She realized that, not only would the flexibility of her system be maintained, but:

  • She would be able to keep a list of resources in one place (video links, web urls, books)
  • She could attach those resources to subjects and lessons
  • She could plan her school year on a large computer screen
  • And the kids could check the schedule on their smaller phones and tablets.

She was convinced. The analogue girl was going digital.

Shifting Into High Gear
Lanaya coming on board the project really kicked things into high gear. She’s a homeschool mother of four who has written Delightful Reading Kits 1-3, Laying Down the Rails for Children, A is for Art: A Fine Art Alphabet Book, and other curricula published by SimplyCharlotteMason.com. She knows how to get things done. Her input and energy has been invaluable.

She brought great ideas to the table, like the scratchpad for jotting down ideas and lists - things you aren’t ready to act on but don’t want to lose track of. She also wisely pushed me to include printable reports for homeschoolers - paper reports they could keep with their records and portfolios to assist with state compliance.

We Need Your Help
Planning and preparation for Flexible School Schedule has gone wonderfully. Now it’s time to turn the dream into a reality, but we need your help. If I am to cut back on client work and focus on coding Flexible School Schedule, we need you to back our Kickstarter campaign.

Application Workflow

1. Gather Your Thoughts
As you homeschool, all kinds of ideas and plans come to mind. But you may not be ready to act on them. The scratchpad is a great place to jot them down so you won't forget.

2. Collect Your Resources
As your homeschool library grows and as you find more and more resources online, it can be difficult to remember what you have and where everything is. The Flexible School Schedule resource list can help. Simply enter a video link, website link or book into the list so you always know what you have and where to find it.

3. Layout Your School Year
Plan your year in flexible terms and weeks per term, not rigid dates and times on a calendar. Homeschool life is rarely rigid. Children go at their own pace. Life happens and we need to stop for a day or two. Flexible School Schedule allows you to speed up or slow down as needed. You can even stop and just start back up right where you left off.

4. Plan Your Subjects
Focus on each child’s individual needs and pace as you plan what subjects you’ll teach. You can schedule subjects to be taught as many times per week or per term as each child and each subject requires.

5. Record Your Progress
As you progress through the school year, mark each lesson complete when it is done. Enter what you did, when you did it and how long you spent doing it. Progress bars will give you an overview of your child’s progress for the year, the term and on a per-subject basis.

6. Report Your Accomplishments
You can create custom reports. Simply select what data you would like to see and click “print” to get beautifully formatted reports that accurately represent your efforts, perfect for your records and to assist with fulfilling state requirements.

Project Timeline

Design - Sept 2016 - Aug 2017 (done)
Plan out the feature set and data structure for Flexible School Schedule. Create mockups of the application's interface. Develop a website to share our plans with others.

Announce - Aug 2017 (done)
Launch the website and send out emails, tweets and Facebook posts to announce our plans to friends, family and other homeschoolers. Ask for their input and feedback. Prepare a Kickstarter campaign so others can participate in the development of Flexible School Schedule.

Fund - Aug 2017 - Sep 2017
Let everyone know they can get in on the ground floor of making Flexible School Schedule a reality by financially supporting our effort to develop the application. The more they give, the less client work we’ll have to take on and the more time we will have to devote to developing Flexible School Schedule.

Code - Oct 2017
We will cut back on client work and start coding Flexible School Schedule!

Launch - Mar 2018
Launch dates are dangerous things in Application development because there are so many ways schedules can slip, but we hope to launch Flexible School Schedule to the public by March 2018.

Yearbook - Future Goal
We would love to provide a place for homeschool families to take and store a yearly school picture of their children. We think it would be so neat to provide a way to order prints in-app.

Grade Book - Future Goal
As children move into middle school and high school, tracking grades for the purposes of creating a transcript and applying to college becomes important. We want Flexible School Schedule to grow and develop to meet the needs of growing and developing homeschool families.

Transcript - Future Goal
Generating a professional transcript for college application is a challenge for most homeschoolers. We would like to provide a simple way for our users to create transcripts for their kids.

Risks and challenges

The two biggest challenges to a project like Flexible School Schedule are time and commitment.

Time
The initial set of features has been set. The data structure has been planned. The interface has been designed. Time has already been spent putting down a foundation for a successful project. We have a reasonable project schedule with plenty of cushion. All that remains is the funding so Phillip can cut back on client work and focus on Flexible School Schedule.

Commitment
Phillip has a track record of completing projects. Danny Johnson of Freedom Driven LLC has contracted work to Phillip. He stated when reviewing AllNaturalContact.com, which Phillip developed, “A lot of people start projects like this. Phillip actually finishes."
