Haunters, Do you need an affordable way to reward your actors? Do you need a way to keep them coming back every night during the season, and returning next season?
Actors, do you like to be known for your talents?
Makeup artists, do you want to let the world know you love blood, guts and gore in addition to your beauty makeups?
Scareit badges can help, with our Merit Badges for Haunters and Horror fans. Inspired by Boy Scouts of America, the Military, and some haunted attractions that already have matching shirts, we want to bring them to you.
A Problem and a Solution
While talking at a haunt convention and interviewing other Haunt Owners through our podcast, HaunTopic Radio, we realized there was a problem retaining actors throughout the season - and it wasn't just happening at our own haunts! Sometimes it boiled down to actors not feeling appreciated and recognized for their work.
With my scouting history and Brian's military history, we realized we could bring the same satisfaction and reward of earning a merit badge or a stripe in the Haunt industry, and we could do it for all the staff, not just the actors.
A System of Rewards and Achievements
Just like Merit Badges for Scouts, or achievements in video games, you need to qualify for the badges. Some badges are awarded by the Haunted Attraction owners for your performance during the season - whether it is acting at the haunted house, being the best actor of the season, or even making someone pee their pants. Other badges will show the world your skills like being a makeup artist or build team. A third category of badges will show the world what type of haunt you work at.
For example, in 2017 the haunt I worked at was open 26 nights, and we gave these badges out to the actors that worked 75% of those nights. If you were one of the actors that had perfect attendance, you received one with a gold border. Now we have actors that want to work at least three quarters of the season, and the ones that already have want to be part of the elite club that has perfect attendance.
In addition to the regular trophies and gift cards we handed out to the best actors of the season, we also handed out our Crowd favorite badges to them. Instead of wearing your trophy or gift card on your shoulder, they can now wear their badges on their sleeves.
Show them off
Now, what do you do with your badges? Unlike the Boy Scouts or the branches of the Military, you're not required to wear them in a specific place or area, though we'd love to see your teams wearing matching shirts or hoodies with all of their swag walking down the street sometime!
This shirt is an example of one of those, with the badges on the sleeve, your name, maybe your haunt's logo on a sleeve or pocket, and your years of service stripes too. Really though, we've had our teams place them on hats, backpacks, vests, pants, hoodies, in their cars, anywhere.
They are small enough that you can put them anywhere, in singles, patterns, or maybe you'll collect them all and will need your own bloody Boy Scout sash to hang them on. They come with a convenient iron-on backing, but you can sew them, and if you like even pin them on with a safety pin.
When you're walking down the street and you see another person with a badge, you instantly know they are part of your tribe of haunters and you can talk to them.
This Kickstarter campaign will allow you to sponsor us at a few different levels - whether you run a home haunt, a full scream park, or just want to donate to the cause, you can. For example, if you are a small home haunt that is open 2 nights and have 10 actors, the Dirty Dozen and Then Some pledge level that includes 12 of the yearly Dead-icated badges - because you and your spouse deserve a badge too - plus 6 awards badges of your choice for only $50.
If you are a larger haunt and have a hundred actors, there are packages for you, but you can decide which awards you are giving away and how many of the perfect attendance badges you think you'll need (and you can always get more after the season if suddenly every actor wants to work every night!).
If you're a home haunter that builds everything yourself for your garage haunt, you can pick up the Home Haunter and the Build Crew designs for $10.
Plus, if you want a larger quantity with a custom badge, we have a pledge level for that too!
Not all badges are available to everyone though - the awards badges are only rewarded to Haunted Attractions to hand out to your teams as exactly that - awards for working at your haunt. You may also include the skills and types of haunt badge, which are available for individuals as well.
Remember, once we meet our initial funding goals, we have extended goals where we will release more badge designs. Because it costs more to design and embroider each new badge, this works out the best of both worlds. We have dozens of ideas for Scareit Badges that we want to see on Haunters from all over the world, so pledge for the amount of badges you think you'll need for the 2018 season, and tell your friends, and your competitors too, because their pledges may help us reach the next goal and you get more badges to choose from!
One question we get often is when will the badges be for sale. Because Kickstarter is not a sales platform, but instead one to raise money to complete a project, Scareit Badges will not go on sale until after we've met our funding goals. We have 30 days to raise enough backing to meet our initial goals, and then we're golden. Well, not this type of Golden - that's the Urine Nation badge, for causing your customers to pee…
Another question we get is when will the badges be delivered if your Kickstarter is successfully backed? We anticipate that by June we will have entered the final production stage of the badges and will start shipping to all of our backers in August. This will allow you to get them before your season starts with the public, and your teams can see what they are striving for.
So please back our Kickstarter project - remember, if we don't meet our goals, nobody pays, but nobody gets any of the badges either. We know you want them, show us how much, and we can work out the details of which badges you need for this season later.
Risks and challenges
While we've heard that this is a great idea and should have been in the market years ago, we want to make sure that you, the owners, the actors, and businesses are supporting us. We've had some badges made, and several of you may have already received one or more of them from your haunt owner or from meeting us at a convention. We're doing this Kickstarter to raise enough money to produce these badges for everyone.
We've set our goals to allow us to produce a dozen different designs that cover all three categories - awards to your actors, some skills, and the type of haunt you are. Once we meet our minimum funding goal, everyone who has sponsored us will get their badges later this summer. The designs are not finalized yet though, and we may need to hire our artists to complete the designs and put them to your votes for which design we should proceed with.
The bad news? If we don't meet our funding goals, the project stops here, but fortunately, nobody pays anything - your pledges are cancelled and it's game over for now. If we exceed our funding goals, it allows us to produce new badge designs, expanding on the three categories of awards, skills and types of haunts, plus badges for 5 years of service, and their multiples, for those of you who have been in a haunt, or even the industry, for several years. We've met quite a few!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
