Since the coin project is being shipped, and Dragoneye Tavern is progressing as well, I thought that I'd like to share my next dice project. The samples were already completed a few months ago, but I was working on the other projects and decided to put it aside until now. So again, thank you for looking at my projects!
Elemental Lotus Dice
I love dice, and throughout the years I have been collecting different dice that intrigues me, and playing dice board games (such as Quarriors etc), because I simply just like rolling dice!
So welcome to my latest project, the Elemental Lotus Dice. These dice are designed with an Eastern Feel in mind in terms of the lotus flower, and fused with the Western touch of the 4 elements often found in fantasy settings.
The original concept was that I wanted to do a die that was unique in design and style, first I wanted to have a 'Split' totem, which the whole totem was shown for the number 1 pip, and then it splits up for the rest of the sides. I also wanted to use a traditional method to number the die - simply by using the traditional yet altered dot system.
As it looked exotic on the paper designs, I felt that it was actually quite confusing for players who are used to the familiarity of the dot layout for normal die, so in the end I decided to have the numbers to have actual fonts, but to have mostly an Eastern feel to it, and one month later, the prototype of the revised version has been completed.
The Die itself
There are a few things I would like to talk about the dice itself. First the dimensions will be 20mm x 20mm, and the material will be like the dice that you often see in the current market. (In the video you can hear the sound of the dice being rolled, you can tell that it's extremely solid and awesome)
The main design for the dice base I have chosen to use an "Opal Stone" feel of the acrylic die - which has the theme of "Hope", and Ancient Romans associated opal with hope and good luck - Exactly fitting to the dice world.
Each side of the die is etched with a pip, and for each side it shows both the number and the elemental design (There are no silk print on the die) - with the number as black and the elemental designs in its own colour. This is something that I'm always happy with, and not often done (most pips from other dice companies only feature a single colour per side). With these dice, it is easy to see what numbers are rolled, and the designs of the dice looks simply amazing for the eyes.
The Elements and the Lotus
The Lotus has a lot of different meanings to the Eastern culture over the decades, but to me, it simply means "Enlightenment". The Lotus grows from the mud and blooms into one of the most beautiful flowers in the world, and to me, this is a great meaning, so therefore using the lotus as an initial design was decided very fast.
Of course the main design of the Lotus was then fused with the Western element culture, and 4 of them were done. Crimson, Azure, Flare and Verdant. (Fire, water, earth and wind)
The Die Face
On the "1" pip, it shows the full Elemental Lotus as a whole, and with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, part of the Lotus is 'sliced' and replaced with the number. The lotus design will always have the colour according to it's element, with the number to have an Eastern style lettering in black ink.
The samples you see in the pictures, are just for everyone to see what the final product looks like, and the elegance of the dice. The final version, it will have the normal dice placements that you see in normal everyday dice - all opposite sides will add to the number 7.
Basically for this project, everything has been done and has been sorted out with the factory, and all we need is just the funding to get the number of dice produced. The samples I have in hand have I'm really proud of, and I have used them in the store Spellbound Games, with a lot of different gamer asking where I bought them from and really liked the design. I personally don't think the photos do enough justice, and they look awesome in person!
So, to keep this extremely simple, since I've got other 2 projects to complete, I would just let this project run it's course, with no stretch goals. This is to allow people who like my designs, to simply just pledge and simply wait for the dice to be completed.
Base Pledge - There will be 2 base pledges
- $18Nzd - The Lotus: A pack of 5 Lotus dice with a single element of your choice
- $16Nzd - The Elements: A pack of 4 Lotus dice with a die from each of the Elements
All backers for either Lotus or Elements pledge will get a free Dice bag. (Worth $5Nzd)
That's right, each pledge (Either Lotus or Element) will come with a free dice bag (so in other words, 1 free bag for each dice backer, which is similar to the coin bag that I used for my previous coin projects. Please note that I have not finalized what colour / size the dice bag will be, but to give everyone a good idea, this was what the coin bags looked like from my Easter coin project.
And of course, each of those pledges will be eligible for any of the following add-ons:
- $16Nzd - Additional Lotus Pack (you can choose the elements)
- $14Nzd - Additional Elements Pack
If you would just like one of each design for your collection, there is also a $16 pack, which contains 1 of each design.
All pledge levels will be able to buy additional add-on dice with no extra shipping costs. So do not fear for unexpected shipping costs.
Studio 4am and Spellbound Games
As I have created projects, my name as a creator can no longer be changed (currently just 4am). But I myself have formed my own personal studio - Studio 4am (I know, very creative), and I strive on creating interesting contents for the gaming community for now and onward.
Only a month ago, I have opened a gaming store, called Spellbound Games in Howick, Eastern Auckland (if you are ever around, please feel free to come visit!! One of my previous backers actually did came into the store, and it really feels amazing to meet people face to face). The store is basically my personal studio, and kinda like a place for gamers to get together (Think of it as a Hybrid Focus), so future projects will often be tested and shown to gamers who walk into the store.
This is just a bit of information to allow everyone to know me a bit more, kinda like a deeper introduction of myself - and my passions and my goals to the gaming community.
Studio 4am will focus on bringing great gaming content to the world, and Spellbound Games will be a gamer's haven to enjoy playing the games they love.
Risks and challenges
Of course, with all projects, manufacturing problems can always arise. however this time this project will be done by myself solely, and as a result of this, I will be able to have 100% control with everything that happens with this project.
If there are delays with the factory, then it's unpreventable, however on my end, nothing should be delayed as designs has already been completed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
