Introducing: Askrias Cube
Welcome to the 5th project of Studio 4am. I've always had a passion for creating new products for gamers all around the world, and 4 years ago I've had an idea to create a dice that you can change faces. I love board games, however I have to admit that - I hate a lot of the set up and clean up from all sort of board games. However there are LOTS of games that requires all these cardboard token chits which keeps track of different items and so on.
So today, I will like to introduce a project that I've been working on for a while - the Askrias Cube.
What is it?
Basically, the Askrias Cube is a plastic die frame that has slots on all 6 sides. Then the user will be able to insert tiles onto the different sides - therefore creating their own die for whatever uses they have in mind. What's better is that - the cube act as a normal die as well, you can roll it, shake it, toss it and the tiles will not fall out. However with a simple tug with your nails, the tile can be changed without much hassle.
What are the dimensions?
For the actual die frame, it measures about 2mm x 2mm. And the tiles itself will measure around 17mm * 17mm. The tile will have a rim around the indents to protect the stickers. And the final sticker size will be approx 14mm * 14mm
What comes with it?
As you can see, each "Set" will come with 2 die frames (you will be able to choose the colour for each set) and 20 tiles. This is combined by 3 different spures to make up the different colours.
What other things should I know?
The die frame and the tiles are all made with injection ABS plastic, and as a result they should be able to take quite a bit of pressure. The reason why the die is designed to have the tiles pop out is because it allows gamers to change the faces with extreme ease.
However, this does not mean that the tiles will pop out when rolled. I have been testing the die for a month, and even when rolling the die works like a charm (you can actually see me rolling it in the video).
When the tile is in place within the frame, it will sit nicely within the frame, so you won't need to worry about the tiles sticking out above the frame, making it unbalanced when rolling.
How about the icons?
I have planned on having each set of Askrias Cube to come with a sheet of decals for gamers to start customising their own die. Special thanks to Monkey Potion for the Icons
The icons are drawn by Monkey Potion, a great Indie game company whom I worked with while I was in Taiwan on their upcoming mobile game, and their icons look great! A Special thanks to Monkey Potion in Taiwan for the great amount of support in icons for Askrias Cubes! A Special thanks to Monkey Potion in Taiwan for the great amount of support in icons for Askrias Cubes! Each set of decals will come with around 40 decals Per theme, and so far I have some ideas of what will be included:
- Debuffs and Buff Theme: - Action / - Attack / - Defense / - Speed / - Accuracy / + Action / + Attack / + Defense / + Speed / + Accuracy (And so on)
- Number buff for MTG Theme: +1/+1 ~ +3/+3 and -1/-1 ~ -3/-3 and Monstrous , Suspend, Reowned reminder
- TRPG Conditions: Poisoned / Burned / Confused / Asleep / Feared / Cursed / Regeneration / Special / Stun / Transformed / Knockdown / Frozen / +AC / +DAM / +HP / +DR / +SR (And Negative versions of it)
- Starwars X Wing Miniature theme: Focus / Barrel Roll / Dodge / Target Lock
- Retro Theme, with simple yet old school icons
- Make your own Theme: Basically one of each icon, but with blank text box so you can grab your own sharpie and write on it!
I played quite a bit of Magic, and now at Spellbound Games we have gamers everywhere! However there has always been something that bothers me about this game - is that there are always quite a bit of different counters that are suppose to remind people of what they are! Normally people will just put a normal D6 die on the card, but it is easily mistaken for just a normal +1/+1 counter or such...
I myself always forget which one of my fleecemane lions have became a monster... so now when running my Abzan deck, I always have a couple of Askrias Cube, with 1 face to be 'Monstrous', and others to be simply '+1/+1' and so on for the other sides. It simply allows the deck creator to make reminders that suits their deck - in a single cube.
Do you run a deck filled with Suspend / Persists? Then change a couple of the tiles to show that, it will make large games so much easier! Now with MTG Origins, Reowned is another useful reminder token that could help quite a bit of players!
Same thing with Warmachine, for my trollbloods I have customized the cubes to run only the Song buffs and different triggers that reminds me during games.
Again, a personal thing that I've always had with the Pokemon game is that I always forget which way to turn your Pokemon to display the different status effects. so with the cube, you can now fit all 5 status effects onto the cube, and no longer will need to turn the card sideways.
It can be used in dungeons and dragons games, or any sort of other games that requires token reminders. Also since Askrias Cube can be rolled just like a normal die, homebrewers will find it awesome that you will be able to create your own random trap which they can roll to see what deadly traps the dungeon has created for the heroes.
Enough said, I personally really dislike looking for all the chits and pieces when setting up a game of miniatures. For X-Wings I can just grab some Askrias Cube, and I have all my action bar sorted.
To make this a simple project - basically the pledge system will be that you will get a set of 2 frame + 20 tiles + 40 stickers of your theme for the base pledge.
Additional Frame / Tiles / Stickers can be added on via Add-ons, with no extra Charge!
Simply just add the add-ons you would want onto your pledge - easy as that!

Risks and challenges
Of course, with all projects, manufacturing problems can always arise. however this time this project will be done by myself solely, and as a result of this, I will be able to have 100% control with everything that happens with this project.
If there are delays with the factory, then it's unpreventable, however on my end, nothing should be delayed as designs has already been completed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
